Botswana is celebrating the 56th anniversary of independence today!
On September 30, 1966, Botswana officially ceased to be a colony of Great Britain. On the same day, a congratulatory telegram was received from the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR N.V. Podgorny to the President of the country, Seretse Khama, with a statement recognizing Botswana as an independent and sovereign state and expressing readiness to establish diplomatic relations with him.
The Soviet Union actively supported Botswana throughout the entire period of its national liberation struggle from British colonial rule, in defending the choice made and the dignity of its people.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1970, relations between our countries have been steadily developing and have good prospects for further deepening.
Congratulations to the people of Botswana on Independence Day, we wish them well-being, prosperity and peace!
