Paramraj Singh Umranangal: Out on Bail

Finally, Paramraj Singh Umranangal (in judicial custody in the 2015 Kotkapura incident and Behbal Kalan police firing case) is partially reprieved as the Faridkot district, and sessions court granted him bail.

The court mentioned that it is clear from the police file that the statements recorded by the police were actually of the protesters of some other incident.

Most importantly, no one has come forward, stating that IG Paramraj Singh Umranangal was in charge of the police party, which caused injuries to the protesters.

IG Umranangal Gets Blanket Bail From Other Cases

Strengthening the whole case, the court also cleared the ambiguity revolving around the weapon from which Ajit Singh was injured saying it is clear from which weapon Ajit Singh got injured.

The public prosecutor also quibbled that Senior Punjab police officer Paramraj Singh Umranangal is falsely framed in this whole case and the conspiracy behind violence and subsequent Kotkapura firing case is yet to be ascertained.

The entire investigation will take its own time, and it is pointless to keep the Punjab IG Paramraj Singh behind bars for an indefinite period.

The whole case took a new turn when both the prosecution and the counsel for the accused played the CCTV footage in the court.

The footage clearly showed protesters attacking the police officials. The footage showed that the police vehicle (water cannon) was also set on fire and its driver was also beaten up by the protesters.

It is clear from the police file that IG Paramraj Umranangal was not the only police officer who was commanding the police team. Not even a single protester came forward before the SIT claiming that Umranangal was commanding the police squad.

Punjab: IG Paramraj Singh Umranangal Released From Jail

Some of the protesters named SSP Sukhminder Singh, DIG Ranbir Khatra, and DIG Amar Singh Chahal along with other police officers to pressurize them to lift off the dharna.

The counsel of IG Paramraj Umranangal said that he is arrested for political gains. He added that IG was called for a meeting and there he was illegally detained.

He further contended that in Kotkapura he was not leading the police team as Rohit Chaudhary (ADGP) and Jatindra Jain (IG Bhatinda zone) was already present in the district. Umranangal produced the MLR and OPD reports of more than 40 police officials who got injured during the clash.

Punjab and Haryana High Court have granted a blanket bail to inspector general of police paramraj singh. The court has also instructed Punjab police to give IG Umranangal a week notice in advance before going ahead with any action in criminal cases against him in the police firing incidents.

The court finally ordered Punjab Police IG Umranangal’s release from the custody after submitting a personal bond of Rs. 50,000 and a surety amount of Rs. 50,000.
