Even before the arrival of Europeans, there were settlements of indigenous inhabitants on this territory - Indians of the Delaware and Metoak tribes. The French navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano, who called this place Nouvelle Angoulême, sailed to the Bay of New York in 1524. But then they did not begin to establish a colony. The true history of the city began with the search for a quick route to Asia by Dutch sailors. Henry Hudson, an Englishman in the service of the Dutch East India Company, was looking for access to the Pacific Ocean.
