Even before the arrival of Europeans, there were settlements of indigenous inhabitants on this territory - Indians of the Delaware and Metoak tribes. The French navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano, who called this place Nouvelle Angoulême, sailed to the Bay of New York in 1524. But then they did not begin to establish a colony.
