Cow's milk, goat's milk, A1, or A2 milk. What should we choose when standing in front of the shelf? Many have grown up with milk. Three glasses of milk a day was the motto. "Milk is good for everyone!" But what is really healthy? It differs from person to person.

A lot has been written about milk. It is not good for many people to drink regular milk. You've probably heard the comment 'cow's milk is only for calves'. In nature, you indeed see that milk is intended for infants and not for adults.

Healthy Balance

Many people experience a slimy feeling in the mouth when drinking milk. This is often a reason to stop drinking milk. A matter of listening carefully to your body and intuition. Lactose Intolerance

Milk contains about 5 percent lactose or milk sugar. This must be processed in our intestines by the enzyme lactase. Most people have this enzyme. As age increases, the chance of a lactose intolerance increases. As the age increases, the body produces less and less of the milk sugar-splitting enzyme lactase. And the less lactase is present in the small intestine, the more likely it is to have lactose intolerance.

If enough of the enzyme lactase is present, there is nothing to worry about. The lactose is then split in the small intestine by the enzyme lactase into the two smaller components, glucose and galactose. Lactose can only be properly absorbed through the intestinal wall into our blood through this splitting and also ensure a good and healthy metabolism.

With lactose intolerance, there is a shortage of the enzyme lactase. Then the following happens: the lactose ends up in the large intestine without splitting it. Here the lactose can ferment with the present intestinal flora. A kind of plaque forms that sticks to the intestinal wall. Vitamins and minerals cannot be properly absorbed and shortages will arise.

Bone thinning

A fair amount of research has been done on drinking milk and bone loss. It was often indicated that the use of (a lot of) milk is more likely to cause bone fractures and decalcification. Milk has an acidifying effect. Your body wants to eliminate this acidification. This requires minerals such as calcium. These are extracted from your bones.

You can say the other way around; bones are largely made up of calcium. Milk contains a lot of calcium. So drinking milk is good for your bones. If only it were that simple!

Milk Intake

The ratio between the different minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus in cow's milk is of great importance, as a result of which it cannot be properly absorbed into the bones. Especially the milk with extra added calcium gives skewed proportions and it is precisely in this process that minerals are robbed from the bones to process them.

Calcium can only be absorbed well if it is present in the correct ratio with magnesium. The good ratio for this is 2: 1. In dairy, the ratio is often higher, about 4: 1. Too little magnesium for a good absorption capacity. Magnesium is then extracted from your bones.

The correct calcium-phosphorus ratio is 1: 1 for proper absorption. Milk contains more phosphorus, often in a 1: 2 ratio. The calcium for which we think we need the milk is then more difficult to absorb. Your body always works on a good balance with the right proportions. To achieve this, your body will steal the necessary minerals from your bones. This stimulates the development of bone loss.

Acid-base Balance

The acid-base balance also plays a major role in this. The more acidifying food you consume, the more minerals are robbed from your body and the more calcium is also excreted. The more basic you eat, the more minerals your body has at its disposal, and the less they need to be robbed from your body or not at all, and the less calcium you lose. A lot of vegetables also ensures healthy bones. So eat a lot of vegetables, preferably with two meals.
