Fun Things To Do In Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka, a tropical paradise found in the middle of the Indian Ocean, has everything you’d want in a holiday; from exciting outdoor activities, watersports, exotic wildlife, as well as a rich historical and cultural background. Here are five things you could do in Sri Lanka no matter what mood you're in.
Visit A Turtle Hatchery
There are 7 species of sea turtles in the world and 5 of which are found in Sri Lanka, nesting in the golden shores or gliding through the azure waters. Turtle hatcheries can be found around the island, but the premier location is on the south coast, in Hikkaduwa or Tangalle. Visit a turtle hatchery to learn more about these intriguing creatures and the conservation efforts carried out by the hatcheries. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll even get to release some baby turtles back into the ocean
Learn To Surf
Sri Lanka is a famous surfing destination; Arugam Bay that’s on the east coast and Weligama that's on the south coast are excellent locations for surfing. Calm shallow waters and plenty of surf schools at Weligama make it the ideal location for beginners. The season for surfing in the south is from November to March as this is when the weather is at its best and the sea at its calmest, making for some great waves.
Whale Watching
Mirissa located in the south coast of the Island is the number one location for whale watching. The scenic view of these incredible giants swimming so close to land is an experience you must have. The warm waters attract different species of whales from Blue whales, Sperm whales, Bryde’s whales, Humpback whales and occasionally Killer whales. If you are lucky you might be able to spot dolphins swimming along your boat.
Go on a Safari
Yala National Park located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka is renowned for its leopard population. The park was first used as a hunting ground for the elite when the British ruled the country. Yala is home to 44 varieties of mammals and more than 200 bird species. The biggest concentration of leopards can also be found in the park along with majestic elephants, spotted deer, peacocks, sloth bears, crocodiles and many more animals.
