What is Aleph?
Aleph is the world’s best lossless data compression algorithm. Aleph outperforms all existing data codecs by compression factor while taking a similar amount of CPU cycles and memory. It means more storage, more bandwidth, or faster downloads.
What is lossless compression?
Lossless compression is a class of data compression algorithms such as Aleph that allows the original data to be perfectly reconstructed from the compressed data. By contrast, lossy compression permits reconstruction only of an approximation of the original data, though usually with improved compression rates (and therefore reduced media sizes).
Which data type does Aleph compress?
Aleph is a universal lossless codec that compresses any data type including video, image, sound, apps, and text. Aleph is the world's first universal algorithm to reduce the size of pre-compressed digital media. When compressing H.265 video and JPEG images, Aleph saves 50-75% of the disk space and network bandwidth.
Why Aleph is unique?
Aleph brings unprecedented compression factors (2X-4X higher than the state-of-the-art) at a reasonable computational cost. Furthermore, Aleph can reduce the size of high entropy data that was considered incompressible, for example, encrypted traffic, pre-compressed video, and pseudo-random sequences.

Is Aleph computationally expensive?
Aleph in fast mode is comparable to the state-of-the-art algorithm such as Zstandard and Brotli. Aleph -9 (normal mode) compresses at about 80-160 Mbps (10-20 MB/s) on a single processing core, with a potential to increase up to 400 Mbps (50 MB/s). Also, we are optimising Aleph to offer a wide range of compression/speed trade-off.
Can Aleph replace video codecs?
Aleph cannot replace lossy video codecs such as H.264, H.265, VP8, and VP9. However, Aleph can be efficiently combined with lossy codecs bringing additional space and bandwidth saving of 50-75%. Aleph is applied as post-compression after a lossy codec.
Can Aleph replace image codecs?
Aleph cannot replace lossy video codecs such as JPEG, HEIC, JP2000, WebP, PNG. However, Aleph can be efficiently combined with lossy codecs bringing additional space and bandwidth saving of 50-75%. Aleph is applied as post-compression after a lossy codec. Like Lepton, but with a higher compression factor.
Can Aleph work in real-time?
Yes, we have developed a VPN client and a prototype video conferencing service based on WebRTC protocol.
Is Aleph efficient in a multi-threaded environment?
Yes, Aleph is efficient in high-load cloud services, e.g. video streaming, social networks. However, there are known limitations of the hardware, such as clock frequency reduction when using AVX2/AVX-512 instruction sets.
Which platform does Aleph run on?
The Aleph compression algorithm is written in C/C++ and can be easily ported to any platform. We have tested Aleph on Windows, Linux, Mac, Android and Linux-based router. We have also optimised Aleph for Intel's AVX2 instruction set.
Does Aleph compress encrypted web traffic?
Yes, Aleph does compress the mainstream web traffic encrypted with TLS/AES, the Advanced Encryption Standard, 2 times and more, depending on the underlying data.
Can Aleph be used in cryptanalysis?
It is possible that Aleph will create a cryptographic weakness in certain cyphers because it is capable of identifying redundancies in encrypted data. This cryptanalysis application of Aleph has not yet been studied.
Is Aleph commercially available?
