Mogul’s Lead Blockchain Developer, David Liu, joined Mogul Production in its telegram channel for the first time to discuss more on his role in the development of Mogul from the development progress, product roadmap updates to the Mogul technology stack.

The conversation was thus:

Moderator|Mogul Productions: Hi David, great to have you here for the AMA. Could you give us a little bit of a background on what you do at Mogul before we kick this off

David Liu| Mogul Productions: Hello everyone! I am David Liu and I do blockchain development at Mogul Productions. I make smart contracts, blockchain integration, and overseas the blockchain architecture of the platform.

Q1.

Moderator|Mogul Productions:So, let’s get started with question 1. This was asked by @MarkFacebook. What will the team be working on for the rest of 2021?

David Liu| Mogul Productions:The main products that we’re working on are the quadratic voting and movie NFT module, NFT marketplace, and smart wallet. We work in an agile process, so we break down these tasks to smaller components as well, and within these, we’re building different bridges, polygon infrastructure, smart contracts, fiat onramps, etc. This allows us to have consistent product releases and launch different features over time.

There’s also a lot being worked on that help support and back-end perspective that a lot of you can’t see when we’re launching products. For example, a back-end system for our support team to help monitor user accounts and give direct support. A lot of this ground work we’ve been working on will start to make a big impact when we launch new features.

Q2.

Moderator|Mogul Productions:Here’s question 2, and this was asked by @PugMagician! What Mogul technical development do you think will be the industry leading tech? What will other projects point to Mogul to say “ This is something new!”?

David Liu| Mogul Productions:Mogul is the first platform to bring together a proper ecosystem for movie funding. We bring together easy onboarding, Hollywood movie makers, a non-custodial smart wallet and an NFT marketplace for the sale of movie props/rewards/merch.

I think our staking and voting system will be highly regarded among the technical community. Especially because it’s never really been done before where blockchain voting is used to decide an off-chain event as big as making a movie. Plus, every movie is represented as an NFT so there’s another layer of authenticity and auditability that people can track through the blockchain to make sure that the votes are authentic and going to the movies that actually end up winning.

Moderator|Mogul Productions:Question 3, which was asked by @defiapez: Vitalik has been talking about quadratic voting since 2017. What was the process like in building these voting smart contracts? Was the audit process extensive? To my knowledge, I don’t think quadratic voting has actually been done yet on a large scale.

David Liu| Mogul Productions:Quadratic voting in itself is not complex to implement but adding staking rewards for voters increased the amount of time necessary for design and testing. This is something we added to encourage people to vote and gamify the process

The audit process was quite smooth, auditors reviewed our code and noted some minor vulnerabilities, which were promptly fixed and approved by the auditors.

We work with 2 auditors, Zokyo and Hacken, and our code has passed with flying colours each time it’s gone to audit :)

Every contract we put out goes through our own internal testing process where we write test cases for the contract to cover the vast majority of potential vulnerabilities. Then we send it to the auditor and they do manual and automated testing and we work with them to improve the code if necessary.

The most important thing, as our team discusses daily, is making sure that our products and UI look friendly to people from the film industry. Our business team has a lot of calls educating Hollywood people on Mogul every day so it’s important when walking them through our product that it’s easy to use and understand.

Moderator|Mogul Productions:So, question 4 was asked by @prakashrj. It was as follows: Can you share your technology stack, including tools used for development, testing and deployment? What is your test coverage and how often do you build and deploy internally?

David Liu| Mogul Productions:It’s a bit of a long one so I’m just going to post the TLDR. The detailed explanation will be posted in a Medium article!

For the platform side, our platform tech stack is centered on Typescript for both the frontend and backend. We are running a custom NodeJS application that serves our REST API backed by a Postgres Database. All of our frontend and backend code lives in a single monorepo using Yarn 2 workspaces. We are making heavy use of codegen steps in our build process to reduce repetitive tasks and to establish strict static typing between the database and the React UI layer. A change to any of our database models is immediately reflected in the generated react-query hooks we are using to load data in our components.

The frontend portion of our stack is kept really lean using a (non-ejected) Create React App build. We aren’t using a component library or UI framework — the UI is a mix of fully hand-coded (new and “legacy”) React components with custom CSS module styles.
We also have an internal admin app built using Create React App and Material UI. We have re-skinned Material UI with a custom theme, but all of our style customizations are in a central location which helps keep our various component definitions free of any css or visual concerns. This helps us be very fast and responsive to any requests our business team has for internal features.

We test our backend with a local integration test suite using ephemeral database instances. We follow a “testing pyramid” pattern and invest more heavily in fast isolated tests and checks — we use strict TypeScript everywhere and have a very strict eslint config. This really helps diminish the need for more comprehensive testing further down the line and empowers us to be more agile.

We build, test, and deploy continuously with every commit pushed to our monorepo. Each PR spawns a temporary staging instance of the application that we use to review and test changes immediately. We release to production at least
once a week with little fanfare with the batch of incremental changes that we have ready. New features are added in disabled state and “released” to production before the moment we formally launch them. This gives us early feedback on any new issues when the stakes are lower and really cuts down on the pressure of launching new features to the entire user base.

Using Docker we’re able to give developers the experience of a one step dev build which means they can spend more time working on features. This is the first step towards velocity during development.

During the development of a feature we employ strict rules around code review to ensure the whole team is abreast of changes to the codebase & product. We pair programs heavily to increase team awareness of incoming changes, and to generally raise the quality of our changes.

Following basic CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous delivery) principles we are building every commit pushed to Github as well as running a plethora of automated checks & tests using Github Actions against it.

Every frontend commit is deployed automatically thanks to Netlify deploy previews, whereas for the backend it’s up to us to choose when we deploy. All changes are deployed and tested first in a dev environment before we pull the trigger to go to production.

With the automated integration pipeline and one-step production deployments it’s no challenge to do several full production deployments a day.

After each production deployment we use Sentry to monitor error rates in real time, and in the case of any issue we’re able to issue a hotfix within minutes or simply roll back to a known good state.

Q5.

Moderator|Mogul Productions:Let’s go for question 5, asked by @gbrown135. My question is regarding the BSC, ETH and Polygon network integration. We know these 3 networks are going to be used together. How will this look when they are all released? Will we have a pool of STARS with a certain amount of STARS on each network? If this is the case how will fees differ between the networks? And is there a seamless mechanism to transfer between them?David Liu| Mogul Productions:A certain amount of the STARS total supply will be deposited on Mainnet and minted on BSC and Polygon, and added on Pancakeswap and Quickswap. Using the Anyswap bridge, users will be able to transfer the STARS between BSC and Mainnet, and Polygon bridge to transfer between Polygon and Mainnet. Gas fees will be close to very low as BSC and Polygon are Layer 2 networks.

In the future, when there is sufficient demand to make it easy for our users, we’ve talked about building a BSC ←-> Matic bridge and have done research into this already so that we know the proper way to do it. In addition, Gas will be free when transactions are done on the Mogul Platform on the Polygon network due to our partnership with Biconomy and building relayer technology to allow users to sign transactions and execute them securely and trustlessly still.

Q6.

Moderator|Mogul Productions:Thanks for that, great insight!! Question 6 was asked by @RonnieDacey. I think the fiat on-ramp and smart wallet will be really beneficial features of the Mogul platform, how is the process going? Any hurdles?

David Liu| Mogul Productions:Smart Wallet smart contracts are finished, audited and in progress with platform front end and robust back-end integration.

Fiat on-ramp is going to be added shortly in the future. In the meantime, users can connect with Metamask and buy ETH with their credit cards via Wyre or MoonPay. One problem with Wyre that our business team is working on is that they only have about a 50% ‘approval’ rate for users using their checkout product in making a transaction. That’s because of the amount of fraud prevention they have in place. So our team has been in touch with other payment providers, even Layer 2 fiat onramps, such as Transak and Moonpay to make sure that when we launch a product we have sufficient geographic and technical coverage for verified users (from the film space) trying to onboard to Mogul and STARS.

Our development team is experienced with payment rails so there are no hurdles in adding features like these from a technical perspective.

Moderator|Mogul Productions:Perfect! Question 7 was asked by @prakashrj. What goals were considered when the platform was designed and architected?

David Liu| Mogul Productions:To lead the DeFiFi industry, by bringing Movie Productions into the hands of the fans, with the power of blockchain technology. We are highly focused on user friendliness, especially for those new to blockchain and DeFi. On the architecture side we prioritized stability, robustness and testability with the goal of being able to develop at speed while still retaining confidence in the system. That means almost zero tolerance for technical debt, which in turn means proper architecture and design of features before development.

The result is that we can release features which are more stable, at a faster pace, and still with a high degree of confidence that we’ve not introduced annoying or potentially risky bugs to the system.

Moderator|Mogul Productions:Great, thanks for that, good answers so far! Learning a lot (or I will be when I’ve read it all later). Question 8 was asked by @jbarcel: Are NFTs a market that mogul would be aiming to get a good market share?

David Liu| Mogul Productions:Yes we are aiming to be the top marketplace for movie props, rewards and virtual NFTs related to movies. We’ve built / are building the front end of the technology to support this so we can work with many more artists and film industry professionals to launch really cool NFT drops more efficiently through auctions and direct listings.

Question 9 was asked by @defiapez: When writing smart contracts, how often are you looking at competitors or blue chip projects in the space? Which projects does Mogul take inspiration from when making smart contracts?

David Liu| Mogul Productions:Mogul, and our development team, are hyper aware of the crypto space and look towards successful projects depending on the feature. The majority of our development team has been participating in DeFi for the last few years. The space moves so fast that you need to be studying the trends to develop quicker and cleaner. There aren’t many “standards” in smart contracts, so you need to pave your own path and find the standards that the best are using and add your own knowledge.

For voting, we study Compound, for Staking we study Sushiswap and for NFT marketplace, we study Opensea. All 3 of these systems are considered to be leaders in their respective areas (governance, farming and NFTs), so we want to be following best in class standards and make sure that we’re seen as innovators in the space.

In terms of the UI for the NFT marketplace, we really liked the simplicity of the new FTX Exchange NFT marketplace and took inspiration from there as well. They offer rewards as NFTs too. Things like a FTX hat or pair of socks and they’re all limited issue. So when having product discussions with the team, that’s the direction we wanted to take, and then as a user, if you buy the NFT you can choose to give it to Mogul or burn it to redeem the reward. Recently we also added the ability in our NFT contracts for the holder to burn their own NFT too to give more flexibility.

Moderator|Mogul Productions:Finally, we have question 10, which was again asked by @defiapez: Blockchain (and all) developers are in high demand. As a developer on the project, what drew you to working on Mogul?

David Liu| Mogul Productions:Sir, I like the coin lol.
With high funding, connections, skills and team dynamics, Mogul will inevitably dominate the DeFiFi space. No way I’m going to pass on such an opportunity to join in! There aren’t many projects out there, where as a developer, you are working on cool smart contracts in governance, NFTs, staking, and wallets at the same time. It’s a really talented team and we get to work on things that are going to be used in the real world.

I’ve been approached to work with a lot of projects, but most of them lack either funding, business connections to bring the project to the next level, or marketing expertise. Mogul has all of that and as developers there are a lot of “sh!t coins” that try to hire you but the good projects stand out easily.

Moderator|CryptoNationAMA: Can you please introduce yourself and give us some details on your background?

Gorav Seth| Mogul Productions: Sure. I’m an investment banker and venture capitalist by profession. Spent over 12 years in Canadian capital markets working on Bay Street (Cdn version of Wall Street) and have raised over $4b in financings. Spent several years at a leading independent investment bank working on financings, mergers & acquisitions, and advisory for mid-size public companies. I currently run the capital markets division for the largest wealth manager in Canada. Before my life in finance, I spent nearly 20 years in the film and entertainment industry as a manager for actors where I did things like oversaw and managed their careers or raise money for film independent films. So I have a pretty good view of both sides of the film industry and the finance side. I’ve seen a lot of problems in the entertainment industry and that’s actually what attracted me to Mogul.

Moderator|CryptoNationAMA:Can you please tell us about Mogul Productions? Why was it created? What problem does this project help solve?

Gorav Seth| Mogul Productions:Mogul is a DeFi and NFT platform that was created for the film & entertainment industry. The team has been building this project for over 2 years and has spent countless hours working with people in the film industry to build a solution for them.

The platform has over 50k users, and that number has been steadily increasing since our launch.

There’s two basic tenets of Mogul. One is the film financing side, which helps empower fans by democratizing the film financing side. We want to provide transparency, access and control to the Mogul community of $STARS holders so they can take part in the process as any large scale financier would.

The platform brings filmmakers and fans together by allowing people to submit their film projects to us to help get financing. Our film team reviews those projects based on a number of different characteristics and then filters them on to a showcase. Mogul’s token holders can vote on the films they like most and help get them financed by Mogul.

Users can then track the process of the film production process and earn amazing rewards and experiences from our platform. When greenlighting any film for financing, Mogul negotiates access and rewards for our community. $STARS holders ($STARS is our token) can then get access to amazing opportunities that they wouldnt be able to find anywhere else. These rewards will vary with each film, but you can expect things ranging anywhere from things like having lunch with the star of the film to spending a day on set, having a zoom call with the director, getting a part in the movie, getting a producer credit, learning session on production, autographed posters, etc.
We provide value to the filmmakers by providing them things such as
i) a global audience of receptive and engaged users

ii) the ability to fund their films in a streamlined, democratized manner

iii) guaranteed distribution via the blockchain (via our partner AIOZ) and generating revenue streams from non-conventional sources such as NFTs.
Conversely, we provide users/fans the ability with being able to get transparency, control and access to the filmmaking process where they can earn rewards, experiences and other unique things on our platform.

The NFT side of our platform allows us to create entertainment focused NFTs and collector items for celebrities and industry insiders that can be used to generate alternate revenue streams for the industry while providing a new asset class for users. While you are here, it is no longer news that the Mogul team in collaboration with Rob Prior , a famous DC artiste unveiled their first ever NFT with Rob burning his original painting live on camera, and then watching that NFT sell for 5,500,000 STARS tokens on the Mogul platform approximately ~$182,050 USD. Moderator|CryptoNationAMA:Could you please tell us about the Mogul team and their backgrounds? We have seen many projects launch with inexperienced team members and some of those have not performed well due to easily avoidable mistakes.

Gorav Seth| Mogul Productions:We have a pretty experienced team that provide expertise and a track record from the blockchain ecosystem, entertainment industry and business community. Each of our team brings different skill sets that differentiate us from many other projects given their past success. Having a diverse and experienced team with real world experiences and successes in the corporate world help elevate our project above many crypto projects out there that are built on hype and little follow through.

For instance, we have Paul Sparkes who recently joined our team. Paul worked for the prime minister of Canada, was a senior executive at Bell Media — the largest media company in Canada and also founded Difference Capital — a company that raised hundreds of millions of dollars before being bought by Mogo (which bought a piece of Coinsmart).

Mogul Productions is now listed on the NASDAQ & Toronto Stock Exchange and valued at $600 million+. Paul also sits on the board of Thunderbird Entertainment, a multi-platform entertainment company that creates develops, produces and distributes scripted and unscripted programming. Another team member would be Cindy Cowan who is an award-winning Hollywood producer with numerous accolades under her belt. She helps bring over 25+ years of industry relationships and knowledge to the Mogul team.

Cindy has worked with all many of the top people in the industry including directors like Peter Berg (director of academy winner, Lone Survivor) to actors such as Robert De Niro, Cameron Diaz, Jeremy Piven, Liam Hemsworth and Vince Vaughan. Getting access to people in the film industry primarily relationship driven and difficulty to penetrate, so it’s important we have people that are seasoned and connected in the space.

David Cormican is another team member — he’s the president of Don Carmody television and he is also an award winning producer. He’s produced dozens of films and knows the ins/outs of the industry, so he’s another great asset to the team. We even have well-known and respected actors, such as Lyriq Bent. Lyriq’s worked on tons of film & tv projects, including starring roles in shows/films such as Saw Horror franchise, Four Brothers, Netflix’s She’s Gotta Have It (Spike Lee), Tyler Perry’s Acrimony (opposite Taraji P Henson), etc.

Moderator|CryptoNationAMA:Are there any competitors to Mogul right now? How do you see this project as being unique or differentiated?

Gorav Seth| Mogul Productions:Mogul does not have any direct competitors given we are the only ones doing this in the blockchain space. I think there are a few other incumbents that are trying to tackle certain issues in the space i.e. distribution, but nothing on the film financing side similar to Mogul

I would view any competition as being more indirect as a result. In terms of competitors that have a working platform and defi film financing / nft platform for film, i believe we are the only ones. Mogul is a new platform that just launched so awareness right now is still building.

Moderator|CryptoNationAMA:Could you please tell us about your partnerships? What impact will it bring to your community?

Gorav Seth| Mogul Productions:We are partnered with some of the best companies in blockchain, such as Matic/Polygon, AIOZ, Chainlink, Biconomy, ChainGuardians, NFTY with many more to come. Within the film and entertainment space, we have some major partnerships coming up with industry titans who recognize Mogul as being the new wave for the industry that can revolutionize the way films are financed. For instance, we recently announced a partnership with Rogers&Cowan/PMK, a leading marketing/PR firm that works with the top studios, actors, producers, etc. in the world.

The impact is that we have industry partnerships that provides us access and reach to the players that dominate the space. We also have partnerships with companies that have domain expertise and a track record of success. These partnerships help us execute on our business initiatives and also drive value by helping to get us mainstream press and media coverage.

Moderator|CryptoNationAMA: Are $STARS tokens going to get listed on any new exchanges? What can we expect?

Gorav Seth| Mogul Productions:We’ve been approach by a handful of large and meaningful exchanges that are interested in listing $STARS. We’ve gotten some great traffic and media exposure that has gotten the attention of a few exchanges, so we are going through the process as we speak for new listings. Keep an eye out over the coming weeks and you’ll see some announcements around that soon.

Moderator|CryptoNationAMA: What are some exciting milestones $STARS has in the upcoming months? Any near-term news or announcements we should expect?

Gorav Seth| Mogul Productions: Yeah, there’s a number of very exciting things coming up to look out for. We will be announcing the funding of some films from our showcase over the next few months. There will be lots attached to those including the experiences and rewards plus press. I had look out for some celebrity involvement and partnerships. New development roll-out of some additional functionality around our NFT platform and obviously, lots of press and media coverage that will help marketing of our platform and $STARS token.

SEGMENT B — TWITTER QUESTIONS:

Q1: What’s MOGUL progressive plan to ensure that its Platform remains relevant and valuable in the next 3–5 years; in terms of adoption and use-cases?

Gorav Seth| Mogul Productions: I think the key thing is going to be execution. There’s lots of projects out there and we are new. The community has yet to see all the work happening behind the scenes, for the showcase and funding of films. I think we will gain a lot of traction, credibility and press once you start seeing some of these films getting financed. With those films, comes LOTS of utility, content, access, rewards, etc. We also get access to the movie stars and all the press that comes with that. People will start taking the platform from the film industry and crypto community once they see films getting funded. We are here for the long-term and are building a business, so anyone who was expecting instant results may be unrealistic on the time it takes to execute on these initiatives.

Our plan is to become the industry standard and de-facto token used in the entertainment industry. Blockchain and crypto is very much esoteric and unknown to people in that world, so a lot of work is being done around education around the benefits and use-cases for this technology we’ve built. I think Mogul has to be run like a business and be careful and measured in its approach. Planning, execution and promotion for everything we do is key. Getting industry buy-in and celebrity or public endorsement from leaders in the space is vital.

As the business evolves and we get the first few projects off the ground, the ecosystem will evolve as well. We will be able to provide more offchain data and track that through our platform.

Q2: I saw that Marvel & D.C. Comics artist, Rob Prior, has painted a Wolf of Wall Street painting that he will be burning & then it will only exists as an NFT on the blockchain. Can you tell us more about this amazing event? How will users be able to paticipate in this auction?

Gorav Seth| Mogul Productions: Yeah, we had an incredible event with Rob Prior on May 27th. It was certainly the first of its kind, where Rob live streamed painting a community voted painting which was turned into an NFT and then the original was burned

That event culminated on May 28th where the NFT was sold for 5.5m stars of US$182k at the time, we actually beat Snoop Dogg’s NFT sale, which was pretty amazing. The event was streamed via a few different platforms, including our website, youtube, and even a TikTok competitor called Lomotif (which has 40m users). I believe we had just under 500k people streaming the event across all platforms. There will be some news about two other NFTs that will be auctioned off, so keep a look out on our telegram channel, website or twitter.

Q3: Mogul plays a part on the film industry. Film industry has a great demand nowadays since the popularization of Netflix. Do Mogul consider these as an opportunity or a threat?

Gorav Seth| Mogul Productions: Not at all. We think the various streaming services dont a pose a threat at all. Instead, the boom in streaming services has created a surge in demand for content. Mogul bridges the gap for filmmakers and fans by helping to get film content financed and distributed. These streaming services could actually become partners for Mogul because we do something they dont. We have a symbiotic relationship with the fans and get input from the people that consume content.

SEGMENT C — TELEGRAM QUESTIONS:

Q1: Has your project been completely decentralized, and will there be any risk of centralization in the future?

Gorav Seth| Mogul Productions: There are certain aspects to Mogul that are on-chain and other elements that are off-chain (we use chainlink as an oracle). Given that we are new to space, we are focusing right now on the film financing aspect of the filmmaking process. As the project evolves, and industry awareness/buy-in becomes more supportive, we will be able to move down the filmmaking process and make more of it decentralized. For instance, we have a decentralized distribution service as a partner, but that’s not the only distribution outlet for the films we finance. They will use conventional distributors such as the Amazons, Netflix, and Apple’s of the world. As a result, we have the film financing aspect decentralized but other aspects of the process centralized. We hope to change those as Mogul evolves and grows.

Q2: What is the total supply and circulating supply?

Gorav Seth| Mogul Productions: Originally, there were 400m of tokens issued but there is now 397.25m (because we burned half the tokens we received for the Rob Prior NFT auction). Mogul burns 50% of the tokens that are used in-app to purchase or redeem items. As such, we have deflationary pressure there to counter the inflation. Also, I would mention that a huge portion of the total supply is currently locked in staking contracts, so the supply is pretty limited. I think there were nearly 80m stars staked plus all the STARS/ETH pairs staked on the platform, so the float is not that big at all. I would guess less than 20% is freely circulating.

Q3: Does your project support staking program? if yes. how is your stake system work, what is the requirement for user if they want to stake in your platform?

Gorav Seth| Mogul Productions: You can stake on our platform — Mogul Productions using just just the $STARS or create a liquidity pair using $STARS/ETH pair. I think the APR for the STARS pool is 19.7% and 190% for the STARS_ETH pool right now.
