What the hell is happening with r/WallStreetBets and Gamestop in simple terms.
BLUF: A relatively broke anonymous stock trader (and others) have earned millions of dollars on worthless Gamestop stock, and caused major billionaires to invest heavily in this worthless stock, causing the billionaires of the world to loose tens of billions of dollars (and counting)…..all via a legal process that takes advantage of (and points out to the world) how laughably ridiculous the world financial infrastructure is.
The r/WSB user “DeepFuckingValue” AKA “DFV” was the first to conceive this plan back in late 2019. This plan involved artificially inflating the value of a stock (in this case, the mostly worthless Gamestop stock AKA “GME”).
DFV ended up sinking a LOT of his money into GME (about $53,000 worth at first) all throughout 2020. This is called a “call option”. He was using the classic tactic of betting on the long shot, betting that this worthless stock would climb above a certain price. If it didn’t, he’d be broke. But if it did…he’d make millions. And as time went on, he kept doubling down on his longshot bet, again and again.
He shared his investments on the reddit page r/WallStreetBets, and whadaya know, other people joined him. And more people. And even more people…..all pumping money into the worthless Gamestop stock.
Well, in the financial world, when a lot of people get together and suddenly start pumping money into a stock, people take notice. After all, the stock market is pretty much just a group of people and banks that are betting on future success. And if a bunch of people buy a stock, that shows that the stock is a good investment, driving up the price of this stock.
This process snowballed, getting bigger and bigger, with more investors and more investors joining in.
Now here’s the tricky part….stock “options”. See, most big investors knew that GME was worthless. Let’s face it, Gamestop has been a failing business for a long time. As such, almost all of the big investors in the world placed “put options” on GME….betting that GME would go down in value, rather than up. “put options” are the opposite of “call options”.
Some investment groups, like Melvin Capital, were “shorting” Gamestop’s stock. Meaning that they were borrowing shares of the stock, and reselling them quickly, and using those proceeds to buy stock from other companies. Confused yet?
Well, here’s the problem….groups like Melvin Capital eventually have to return those shares of GME…they were selling a stock that they never really owned in the first place (sound familiar *cough* 2003 housing bubble?)
And now, with Gamestop’s stock soaring from around $350 per hare…many billionaires of the world have lost a shitton of money, since the original GME stock was about $15kkk per share. They are ow forced to pay back that borrowed GME stock at the current market value, rather than what they bought it for (remember the big investors were betting that it would go down)
And that’s the story of how a group of memesters severely hurt the billionaires of the world, causing them to be bailed out with billions of dollars of federal tax money. None of this stuff was illegal, the r/WallStreetBets page was an open page, and there is nothing illegal about a bunch of dudes getting together and buying a bunch of stock at the same time. No insider trading was done…most of these people were amateur stock investors. This act is obviously risky in a personal sense; directly hurting billionaires’ wallets is the quickest way to ensure one’s demise even more quickly than having Bill Clinton on your private island, or campaigning against Vladimir Putin. But these guys got together not to hurt or harm the average American, but to strike back against the oligarchs of the world….and they have certainly succeeded.
