Cloud computing is the on-demand availability of computer system resources, especially data storage (cloud storage) and computing power, without direct active management by the user.

The term is generally used to describe data centers available to many users over the Internet. Large clouds, predominant today, often have functions distributed over multiple locations from central servers. If the connection to the user is relatively close, it may be designated an edge server.

Cloud computing in healthcare increases the efficiency of the industry, while decreasing costs. Cloud computing makes medical record-sharing easier and safer, automates backend operations and even facilitates the creation, and maintenance of, telehealth apps.

The cloud computing technology in healthcare industry in basically used for memory, computation, networking, and storage purposes. The healthcare cloud computing companies offers services such as Software-As-A-Service (SAAS), Platform-As-A-Service (PAAS), and Infrastructure-As-A-Service (IAAS). These services can be deployed in public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid cloud.

Growing demand of cloud for improving storage, scalability, & flexibility of data and increasing implementation of information technology for cloud adoption and reduction in healthcare costs are the major drivers which are likely to anticipate the growth of healthcare cloud computing market. Technological advancements & proliferation of internet and favorable regulatory acts are likely to add new opportunities for this market in the coming years.

Artificial intelligence in healthcare is the use of complex algorithms and software in other words artificial intelligence (AI) to emulate human cognition in the analysis, interpretation, and comprehension of complicated medical and healthcare data. Specifically, AI is the ability of computer algorithms to approximate conclusions without direct human input.

Artificial intelligence has revolutionized the healthcare industry by designing treatment plans, medication management, assisting in repetitive tasks, and drug discovery. Increasing adoption of precision medicine has made enabled simplicity of management and cost reduction. Increasing application in genomics research coupled with incremental innovation in robotic personal digital assistants boost industry growth.

Radiology

The ability to interpret imaging results with radiology may aid clinicians in detecting a minute change in an image that a clinician might accidentally miss. A study at Stanford created an algorithm that could detect pneumonia at that specific site, in those patients involved, with a better average F1 metric (a statistical metric based on accuracy and recall), than the radiologists involved in that trial.

Recent advances have suggested the use of AI to describe and evaluate the outcome of maxillo-facial surgery or the assessment of cleft palate therapy in regard to facial attractiveness or age appearance.

Telehealth

The increase of telemedicine, has shown the rise of possible AI applications. The ability to monitor patients using AI may allow for the communication of information to physicians if possible disease activity may have occurred. A wearable device may allow for constant monitoring of a patient and also allow for the ability to notice changes that may be less distinguishable by humans.

Electronic Health Records

Electronic health records are crucial to the digitalization and information spread of the healthcare industry. However, logging all of this data comes with its own problems like cognitive overload and burnout for users. EHR developers are now automating much of the process and even starting to use natural language processing (NLP) tools to improve this process.

One study conducted by the Centerstone research institute found that predictive modeling of EHR data has achieved 70–72% accuracy in predicting individualized treatment response at baseline. Meaning using an AI tool that scans EHR data. It can pretty accurately predict the course of disease in a person.

IoT devices can be used to enable remote health monitoring and emergency notification systems. These health monitoring devices can range from blood pressure and heart rate monitors to advanced devices capable of monitoring specialized implants, such as pacemakers, Fitbit electronic wristbands, or advanced hearing aids.

Some hospitals have begun implementing "smart beds" that can detect when they are occupied and when a patient is attempting to get up. It can also adjust itself to ensure appropriate pressure and support is applied to the patient without the manual interaction of nurses.

A 2015 Goldman Sachs report indicated that healthcare IoT devices "can save the United States more than $300 billion in annual healthcare expenditures by increasing revenue and decreasing cost." Moreover, the use of mobile devices to support medical follow-up led to the creation of 'm-health', used analyzed health statistics."

Elder care

One key application of a smart home is to provide assistance for those with disabilities and elderly individuals. These home systems use assistive technology to accommodate an owner's specific disabilities. Voice control can assist users with sight and mobility limitations while alert systems can be connected directly to cochlear implants worn by hearing-impaired users.

They can also be equipped with additional safety features. These features can include sensors that monitor for medical emergencies such as falls or seizures. Smart home technology applied in this way can provide users with more freedom and a higher quality of life.

The term "Enterprise IoT" refers to devices used in business and corporate settings. By 2019, it is estimated that the EIoT will account for 9.1 billion devices.

A Worldwide Master Key for Drug Safety Monitoring

source: freepik

Pharmacovigilance (PV) is defined as the science and activities relating to the detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects or any other drug-related problem.

Pharmacovigilance plays a significant role in pharmaceutical and biotechnological sectors in designing of drugs and their interactions. The pharmacovigilance involves collecting information from healthcare providers and patients to know about the hazards associated with medications.

pharmacovigilance heavily focuses on adverse drug reactions, or ADRs, which are defined as any response to a drug which is noxious and unintended, including lack of efficacy (the condition that this definition only applies with the doses normally used for the prophylaxis, diagnosis or therapy of disease, or for the modification of physiological disorder function was excluded with the latest amendment of the applicable legislation).

Medication errors such as overdose, and misuse and abuse of a drug as well as drug exposure during pregnancy and breastfeeding, are also of interest, even without an adverse event, because they may result in an adverse drug reaction.

Information received from patients and healthcare providers via pharmacovigilance agreements (PVAs), as well as other sources such as the medical literature, plays a critical role in providing the data necessary for pharmacovigilance to take place.

In fact, in order to market or to test a pharmaceutical product in most countries, adverse event data received by the license holder (usually a pharmaceutical company) must be submitted to the local drug regulatory authority. (See Adverse event reporting below.

Ultimately, pharmacovigilance is concerned with identifying the hazards associated with pharmaceutical products and with minimizing the risk of any harm that may come to patients. Companies must conduct a comprehensive drug safety and pharmacovigilance audit to assess their compliance with worldwide laws, regulations, and guidance

What is DBS?

DBS is a way to modulate parts of the brain that cause disabling conditions such as Parkinson's disease without damaging the brain. Electrodes are placed within certain regions of the brain known to control movement, such as in the thalamus (to treat essential tremor and other forms of tremor) or in the globus pallidus (for Parkinson's disease and dystonia). These electrodes are then connected by small wires to a battery-powered device called an impulse generator, which is surgically implanted under the skin of the chest wall, just below the collarbone. When activated, the impulse generator sends electrical pulses to the target areas in the brain, blocking the brain’s own impulses that cause tremors or other involuntary movement symptoms.

Key Points:

ment disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor and dystonia.

Recent studies suggest DBS may help with symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease, Tourette’s syndrome, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Potential DBS candidates must first obtain an accurate diagnosis.

Deep brain stimulation, or DBS, is a therapy that offers relief from various move

Rewiring the brain with DBS

Put simply, the brain is composed of three main parts-- the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem. Within these key sections, there is a left and right hemisphere, gray matter, white matter, connecting fibers, and those 100 billion neurons. One of the benefits of studies in brain mapping and DBS includes a newfound ability to explore and manipulate different regions and parts of the brain.

Deep Brain Stimulation: How It Works

A surgeon implants a small battery operated device similar to a pacemaker under the skin near the collar bone. The doctor then positions wires from the device with electrodes on their ends in areas of the brain that control motor function. Usually a person remains awake during surgery so that he or she can answer questions and perform certain tasks to make sure that the electrodes are positioned correctly. The device works by electrically stimulating these areas and blocking the abnormal nerve signals that cause the tremor in Parkinson’s disease patients.

Most people with Parkinson’s disease will require the surgery be done on both sides of the brain. The procedure is performed with the patient awake to ensure optimal placement of the electrodes and maximize the potential for benefit. A few weeks after surgery, a movement disorder specialist uses a handheld programmer to set parameters, tailored to each individual’s unique symptoms, into the neurostimulator. The DBS settings are gradually tweaked over time and medications are simultaneously adjusted. Most people are able to decrease (but not completely discontinue) Parkinson’s drugs after DBS. Determining the optimal combination of drugs and DBS settings — that which gives the most benefit and the least side effects — can take several months and even up to a year.

Stem cells have the potential to treat a wide range of diseases. Here, discover why these cells are such a powerful tool for treating disease—and what hurdles experts face before new therapies reach patients.

Download PDF Brochure of Study Here

source: freepik

Stem cells are preliminary body cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. Under controlled environment in the body or a clinical laboratory, these cells divide to form more cells called daughter cells.

Due to the advent of modern health science, these cells play a major role in understanding the occurrence of diseases, generation of advanced regenerative medicines, and drug discovery. There are certain sources such as embryo, bone marrow, body fats, and umbilical cord blood amongst others, where stem cells are generated.

Neurodegeneration

Research has been conducted on the effects of stem cells on animal models of brain degeneration, such as in Parkinson's disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease. There have been preliminary studies related to multiple sclerosis.

Healthy adult brains contain neural stem cells which divide to maintain general stem-cell numbers, or become progenitor cells. In healthy adult laboratory animals, progenitor cells migrate within the brain and function primarily to maintain neuron populations for olfaction (the sense of smell). Pharmacological activation of endogenous neural stem cells has been reported to induce neuroprotection and behavioral recovery in adult rat models of neurological disorder.

Blood-Cell Formation

The specificity of the human immune-cell repertoire is what allows the human body to defend itself from rapidly adapting antigens. However, the immune system is vulnerable to degradation upon the pathogenesis of disease, and because of the critical role that it plays in overall defense, its degradation is often fatal to the organism as a whole. Diseases of hematopoietic cells are diagnosed and classified via a subspecialty of pathology known as hematopathology.

The specificity of the immune cells is what allows recognition of foreign antigens, causing further challenges in the treatment of immune disease. Identical matches between donor and recipient must be made for successful transplantation treatments, but matches are uncommon, even between first-degree relatives. Research using both hematopoietic adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells has provided insight into the possible mechanisms and methods of treatment for many of these ailments.

Brain and spinal cord injury

Stroke and traumatic brain injury lead to cell death, characterized by a loss of neurons and oligodendrocytes within the brain. Clinical and animal studies have been conducted into the use of stem cells in cases of spinal cord injury.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinsons disease is one of the progressive nervous system disorder that affects the movement of individuals. The symptoms of Parkinsons starts gradually with a barely noticeable tremors in one hand.

The further symptoms of the disease usually leads to stiffness, rigid muscles, impaired posture and balance, loss of automatic movement, and slowing of movement. Parkinsons disease cannot be completely cured, however, the medications helps to improve the symptoms of the disease.

Brain – Biomaterials and gene therapy to support cellular therapy in Parkinson's disease and brain injury

Progenitors of midbrain dopaminergic neurones derived human pluripotent stem cells are strong candidates for clinical trials in Parkinson's disease and similar strategies are under development to treat brain injury following stroke or trauma. Using human stem cells in an animal model, this project will develop better materials on which to grow and deliver cells for neural transplant, and assess whether genetically modifying the cells to express growth factors can enhance their effectiveness. It will also identify ways to enhance the survival and growth of such cells by delivering agents that affect the local environment into which cells are transplanted.

Brain Cell Death

There is speculation of several mechanisms by which the brain cells could be lost. One mechanism consists of an abnormal accumulation of the protein alpha-synuclein bound to ubiquitin in the damaged cells. This insoluble protein accumulates inside neurones forming inclusions called Lewy bodies.

According to the Braak staging, a classification of the disease based on pathological findings proposed by Heiko Braak, Lewy bodies first appear in the olfactory bulb, medulla oblongata and pontine tegmentum; individuals at this stage may be asymptomatic or may have early non-motor symptoms (such as loss of sense of smell, or some sleep or automatic dysfunction). As the disease progresses, Lewy bodies develop in the substantia nigra, areas of the midbrain and basal forebrain and, finally, the neocortex.

Rehabilitation robot is mechanically operated medical device which is designed to improve the movements in individuals with physical impaired functioning. The rehabilitation robots used as a substitute for lost limb movements caused by neurological or traumatic events.

Stroke is the major cause of adult disability, such as gait impairment. The device consists a wide range of portable and stationary electromechanical assisted training devices to improve the lost body functions.

Current robotic devices include exoskeletons for aiding limb or hand movement such as the Tibion Bionic Leg, the Myomo Neuro-robotic System, MRISAR's STRAC (Symbiotic Terrain Robotic Assist Chair) and the Berkeley Bionics eLegs; enhanced treadmills such as Hocoma's Lokomat; robotic arms to retrain motor movement of the limb such as the MIT-MANUS, and finger rehabilitation devices such as tyromotion's AMADEO. Some devices are meant to aid strength development of specific motor movements, while others seek to aid these movements directly.

Often robotic technologies attempt to leverage the principles of neuroplasticity by improving quality of movement, and increasing the intensity and repetition of the task. Over the last two decades, research into robot mediated therapy for the rehabilitation of stroke patients has grown significantly as the potential for cheaper and more effective therapy has been identified. Though stroke has been the focus of most studies due to its prevalence in North America, rehabilitation robotics can also be applied to individuals (including children) with cerebral palsy, or those recovering from orthopaedic surgery.

The MIT-MANUS in particular has been studied as a means of providing individualized, continuous therapy to patients who have suffered a stroke by using a performance-based progressive algorithm. The responsive software allows the robot to alter the amount of assistance it provides, based on the patient's speed and timing of movement. This allows for a more personalized treatment session without the need for constant therapist interaction.

An additional benefit to this type of adaptive robotic therapy is a marked decrease in spasticity and muscle tone in the affected arm. Different spatial orientations of the robot allow for horizontal or vertical motion, or a combination in a variety of planes. The vertical, anti-gravity setting is particularly useful for improving shoulder and elbow function.

Industrial Microbiology refers to a branch of applied microbiology that attributes to the microorganism screenings for the production of pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, personal care products and other applications.

Microbiology encompasses numerous sub-disciplines including virology, bacteriology, protistology, mycology, immunology and parasitology.

Viruses have been variably classified as organisms, as they have been considered either as very simple microorganisms or very complex molecules. Prions, never considered as microorganisms, have been investigated by virologists, however, as the clinical effects traced to them were originally presumed due to chronic viral infections, and virologists took search—discovering "infectious proteins".

The branches of microbiology can be classified into applied sciences, or divided according to taxonomy, as is the case with bacteriology, mycology, protozoology, virology and phycology.

There is considerable overlap between the specific branches of microbiology with each other and with other disciplines, and certain aspects of these branches can extend beyond the traditional scope of microbiology A pure research branch of microbiology is termed cellular microbiology.

Symbiotic microbial communities confer benefits to their human and animal hosts health including aiding digestion, producing beneficial vitamins and amino acids, and suppressing pathogenic microbes.

Some benefit may be conferred by eating fermented foods, probiotics (bacteria potentially beneficial to the digestive system) or prebiotics (substances consumed to promote the growth of probiotic microorganisms). The ways the microbiome influences human and animal health, as well as methods to influence the microbiome are active areas of research.

Research has suggested that microorganisms could be useful in the treatment of cancer. Various strains of non-pathogenic clostridia can infiltrate and replicate within solid tumors. Clostridial vectors can be safely administered and their potential to deliver therapeutic proteins has been demonstrated in a variety of preclinical models.

Risk management plans

A risk management plan (RMP) is a documented plan that describes the risks (adverse drug reactions and potential adverse reactions) associated with the use of a drug and how they are being handled (warning on drug label or on packet inserts of possible side effects which if observed should cause the patient to inform/see his physician and/or pharmacist and/or the manufacturer of the drug and/or the FDA, EMA)).

The overall goal of an RMP is to assure a positive risk-benefit profile once the drug is (has been) marketed. The document is required to be submitted, in a specified format, with all new market authorization requests within the European Union (EU). Although not necessarily required, RMPs may also be submitted in countries outside the EU.

Rising Incidences of Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs)

Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) is an important public health problem, signifying an important cause of illness and death. Because all drugs have the potential for adverse drug reactions, a risk-benefit analysis is necessary whenever a drug is prescribed. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality 2018, In the US, 3% to 7% of all hospitalizations are due to adverse drug reactions. ADRs occur from 10% to 20% of admissions; about 10% to 20% of these ADRs are severe.

These statistics do not include the number of ADRs that occur in ambulatory and nursing home patients. Although the exact number of ADRs is not specified, ADRs represent a significant public health problem that is, for the most part, preventable. In 2016, 1,238,178 reports related to suspected adverse reactions were collected and managed in EudraVigilance, 339,544 of which originate from the European Economic Area (EEA).

European database for adverse drug reaction reports, which Member State and the Agency use for monitoring the safety of authorized medicines on the EU market. EudraVigilance now holds 10.8 million reports referring to 6.7 million cases and therefore is one of the most significant adverse drug reaction databases in the world.

Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) reported by a patient or healthcare professional adds to safety monitoring and thus to the safe and effective use of medicines. The increasing amount of data generated through adverse drug reaction report needs to be handled and stored carefully. All these data come in different forms, language, location, etc. To arrange these uniformly the automation systems/software are helpful.
