TelePay is shutting down - What You Need to Know

Dear community,

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the closure of TelePay. As the founder of TelePay, I want to thank you for your support and contributions to the platform.

Over the last few months, our team has struggled to keep up with the product development due to our full-time jobs, which made it challenging to sustain a bootstrapped, no-funded startup. Although we were able to launch an MVP beta version, we discovered weak points and potential improvements that we were working on for a stronger, better-structured, and newer version. Unfortunately, we were not able to maintain the development speed required to achieve our market goals.

This year, several similar services with funding support entered the market, which diminished our momentum, social media following, and community support. As a result, the volume of transactions and signups on the platform reduced to historical lows, with almost zero interest from the users.

Although I personally negotiated with several investors to raise $10M for funding, we were unable to close the deals. Meanwhile, I had to move from my home country, start from scratch in another nation, secure a full-time job, and establish myself there. The team also completely changed, with new partners joining, but we were unable to maintain the momentum required for a successful product.

There is much to say about TelePay's impact on the ecosystem, and how we inspired other new actors there, as I recently learned from some team members of those products. However, society values results over efforts, and we recognize that despite our best efforts, this was not the right time for us.

We appreciate the support from the community, supporters, friends, external partners, and everyone who contributed to the platform's development. We want to wish you all the best of luck in your present and future endeavors.

If you have funds in TelePay, please take immediate action and request a withdrawal of your funds. We will shut down the platform on May 29th, 2023, one month from now, to give everyone ample time to withdraw their funds.

To withdraw funds, please log into your TelePay account, get into all of your merchant and personal wallets, and request the withdraw using the button named for that. Please note that after the platform is closed, it will not be possible to claim your funds, so please act promptly.

We understand that this may cause inconvenience, and we want to make this process as smooth as possible for you. Please feel free to contact us at @TelePaySupport on Telegram if you have any questions or require further assistance.

Minimum deposits and API improvements

In April 2022, we introduced a minimum amount for withdrawals and explained that it was necessary in order to prevent loss of liquidity when processing withdrawals.

Today we are introducing minimum deposit amounts for some assets to shorten blockchain fees on incoming/outgoing transactions.

The minimum deposit amount is visible in the form. We also added the total equivalent in USD price (aproximate).

As for preventing losses to the platform, we have established this configuration for Toncoin:

Minimum deposit: 0.5 TON.
Minimum withdrawal: 0.5 TON.
Withdrawal processing fee: 2.8%.

By doing this, we can cover the blockchain fee and save some revenue for TelePay. Our simulations threw these results, which are the best numbers we can offer now to the TON blockchain users.

Deposits for HIVE and HBD have no minimum amount. That's an advantage of Hive blockchain vs. TON blockchain, they don't have fees. But, we do charge a small fee on Hive/HBD withdrawals, that's your payment for our service. 🙂

Specifying the type of payment that you'd like to receive is now possible. You can choose between on-chain, off-chain transactions, or bot.

coingecko_id (string) The asset ID on CoinGecko, which we use as a provider to cache the price against USD. Just in case you need it.
deposit_minimum (decimal) The minimum required amount for on-chain deposits.
deposit_enabled (boolean) Deposits to this asset are enabled or not.
withdrawal_minimum (decimal) The minimum required amount for on-chain withdrawals.
withdrawal_enabled (boolean) Withdrawals from this asset are enabled or not.
withdrawal_fee_percentage (decimal) The withdrawal (percentage) fee associated with this asset.

It will be kept functional, for compatibility purposes with the older versions, but we encourage you to use the GET /getAsset endpoint, where the withdrawal minimum (among other data) is served.

We recommend updating your apps to ensure that:

Your invoices comply with the minimum deposit amount for each asset, if defined.
Check if deposits for an asset are enabled before creating new invoices.
Handle the error=deposit.disabled error when creating an invoice.
Handle the error=deposit.minimum error when creating an invoice.

New, more secure, and robust withdrawals mechanism. What you need to know about it.

Two months ago, due to a security incident, we had to temporarily disable withdrawals on TON, Hive and HBD, our supported assets up to this day. It was a security measure to prevent more funds to be stolen, while we started completely redesigning our entire withdrawals mechanism.

Today, we're glad to inform you that you can now withdraw your funds on TelePay, with some important changes that you must know if you're integrating our API, or using our service as a wallet for your coins.

What's new

Some withdrawals are manually audited and approved. During the next days, just to ensure that our new mechanism is working as expected, we will be reviewing and approving each new witdrawal request. This won't be a permanent measurement.
Each withdrawal has new states and webhooks. Previously, when you withdraw your funds, TelePay just performed the transaction and assumed it was confirmed in the blockchain. Now we have a stronger and more robust way to analyze, perform and confirm the transaction.

widthdrawal.created: The withdrawal is created, the funds are debit from your wallet, to prevent something like what we expected in the security incident. Then, your withdrawal request goes to a moderation queue, where a human will check it and approve it.
withdrawal.auditing: Your withdrawal is being audited by a human.
withdrawal.performing: Your withdrawal is being performed, or broadcasted to the blockchain.
withdrawal.confirming: Your withdrawal has been performed, and we're making sure it's confirmed in the blockchain.
withdrawal.completed: Your withdrawal is completed successfully.
withdrawal.failed: Your withdrawal has failed or we canceled it.

Select the webhook events, in your merchant developers section

You can no longer attach a memo or message to the withdrawal transaction. We have disabled that capability, to attach our own message to check and confirm the transaction. Sorry for that, it's for security purposes.

To withdraw funds, you only specify the amount and the destination wallet address.

You can follow your withdrawal status in real-time. Once you request to withdraw your funds, you're redirected to the withdrawal details page, where you will see the transaction being performed. After it's confirmed, the "View in explorer" button will let you see the transaction in the blockchain explorer.

Apologies for the long delay

Unfortunately, our team is small, and while we keep raising funds to hire more members, our current working capabilities are not enough to develop fast. We apologize for the long delay in fixing this problem.

From now on, we continue with our roadmap and will keep knocking on doors, raising funds to increase our team strength and equipment.

Differences between on-chain and off-chain transactions

Ledger blockchains introduced a way to distribute and decentralize finances, creating an ecosystem without central authorities. Payments sent between wallets in the blockchain stay recorded forever in the public transactions book. And, what can you do if you'd like to transfer funds to a friend without having your transaction public forever?

That's the endless debate. On-chain transactions vs. off-chain transactions.

Let's get deeper about that.

On-chain

This term refers to transactions and operations processed and recorded in the blockchain.

Advantages:

Decentralized, no one can take your funds or alter the state of your wallet.
There's a public record of each transaction, so you can't lose them.
Your balance is distributed in the blockchain.

Disadvantages:

It's normally slower, depending on the blockchain specifications.
Transactions costs gas to pay miners or validators, you have to pay a fee.

Examples:

Sending money from a TON wallet to another TON wallet.
TelePay merchants receiving a payment for an invoice.
Withdrawal from TelePay, back to a blockchain wallet.

Off-chain

This term refers to transctions an operations occurring on a cryptocurrency network, not directly on the blockchain, but ouside of it. Specific examples are platforms like TelePay or custodial wallets.

Advantages:

Performed instantly. Faster transactions.
No fee required, not paying a gas to any miners or validators.
Sending any amount of cryptocurrencies is possible, and the cost is the same: zero.
Protects your privacy by allowing anonimity of transactions.

Disadvantage:

There's a central authority performing the transactions, it's not decentralized. Therefore, you have to trust in that authority.

Examples:

Sending money inside TelePay between off-chain wallets.
Paying an invoice with your TelePay internal (off-chain) balance.

Which shoud I use?

Both methods are great and presents important advantages. Using a combination of both on-chain and off-chains transactions, depending of the situation, is the best strategy to send funds and store your money. None of them is better, both are equally important.

Need to transfer money often? Store it on TelePay and send it off-chain.

Need to transfer large amounts? Possibly on-chain is better, even though paying a fee is required.

Now you know the differences. Chose by yourself.

Smarter invoices: new flexible payments, and removed TON memos.

Most exchanges and payment gateways require a memo for every TON deposit. "Don't forget the MEMO"... That's the easiest strategy to check transactions, in fact, we were doing it like that, until today. It works, but it's not scallable to met customers requirements.

👋 Bye bye memos

Introducing: better TON payments. Now your invoices are smarter, your customers don't need to attach a memo (optional text message) on every transaction. TelePay now dedicates a specific wallet for every new invoice, achieving granular payments identification.

Thanks to this update, users from @wallet and @CryptoBot (Telegram bots) can send their payments without losing their funds, and without having to transfer them into an intermediate on-chain wallet.

By default, some apps, exchanges and bots attaches a mandatory memo to their withdrawals (outgoing transactions), frustrating your possibility to chose the memo. Then, you can't use them to deposit on major exchanges, but you can with Telepay.

💪 Flexible payments

What about people sending less amount than expected? And what about those who overpaid? No a problem anymore!

Today, we're introducing a smarter, and more flexible payments experience, where users can send less or even more TON than expected on each invoice.

This is what we do:

if amount received < amount expected, we tell the user to send the remaining amount
if amount received >= amount expected, we confirm the invoice

🧑‍💻 API updated

Also, here's a new minor version of the API, we'll be updating the SDKs progressively.

New field on /getMe: is_active, defines wether the merchant is active or not.
Now deactivated merchants get 403 (forbidden) responses on each API endpoint.
New endpoint to get specific merchant wallet balance: POST /getBalance.

TON testnet vs. mainnet. How to get free test Toncoins?

The TON blockchain stores transactions and smart contracts in two networks: a test network, named testnet, and a real network, named mainnet. The testnet is used for... testing. 😅 Developers use it to test their bots, apps, and platforms before releasing them to the mainnet.

Mainnet is the network on which the Toncoin tokens and other smart contracts are operating real-value assets. In short words: 1 TON in testnet = $0 USD, but in mainnet is real money.

A wallet, two networks

Each TON wallet supports both networks, and you can see the balance with a blockchain explorer. For example, our address EQA5Pxp_EC9pTlxrvO59D1iqBqodajojullgf07ENKa22oSN can be inspected, like this:

If you need Toncoins in the testnet, you can get them by using the faucet @testgiver_ton_bot Telegram bot. Simply open the bot, send the /get command, solve the captcha, enter your wallet address and you'll receive 2 TON. If you need to create a wallet, read this other post.

What can you do with those test tokens? If you're a dev, use them to test the payments in your TelePay app, via the testnet, without using real money. That way, if your app is not ready for production, you won't lose money paying fees to the blockchain.

A minimum amount is now required for withdrawals: why?

TelePay is a payments gateway, it works like a wallet, but it is not 100% a wallet, but more: our main work is to handle incoming payments, on which we charge 0 fees. We even manage internal transfers of tokens of any kind, without charging fees too.

Everything is OK with deposits and internal transfers. The problem arises when you need to withdraw funds back to the blockchain.

Since our launch, we've been following closely the blockchain fees associated with every withdrawal performed on the platform. For the Hive and HBD tokens (recently listed), the blockchain transfers cost us zero in the concept of blockchain fees. But, the TON blockchain charges fees to our liquidity pool when we need to send money from our platform, back to your personal wallet in the blockchain (a.k.a. withdrawal).

TON withdrawals with an amount > 0.2, costs us fees that we can cover with the processing fee. If we allow less than 0.2 TON for withdrawals, the processing fee (our fee) would not cover the blockchain fee, resulting on us losing money.

👌 In short

if the withdrawal amount < 0.2, we lose money and that's not OK for TelePay

if the withdrawal amount>= 0.2, we can cover the blockchain fee with our processing fee

That's why we have just introduced a minimum required amount for every withdrawal operation, to prevent us from losing money on paying blockchain fees we can't afford.

✨ Transparency

One of our core principles is transparency. As you can see, our wallets are public, like the TON wallet and Hive wallet. If you check on the first withdrawals from our TON wallet, you can see that many of them have a blockchain fee higher than the amount being transferred. Let's see some examples:

In this transaction, you can see that the amount being sent out of TelePay is 0.00228 TON, more specifically in the TONxAds bot, and the blockchain fee is 0.006090279 TON.

That's a negative balance of -0,003290279 TON. In just a few words: TelePay losing money. Here you can see a screenshot of our admin panel, where we list some of those withdrawals producing losses for us.

👀 This is how we handle withdrawals now

When you withdraw via the dashboard, you'll see a label under the amount input, saying "minimum required", only if applicable. Other tokens will not have this minimum amount.

🧑‍💻 Devs, action from your side is required

If you're a developer, you need to implement this logic on your app. For that, we released this new endpoint for you to consult the API, fetching the minimum amount for a given asset. The endpoint is called getWithdrawMinimum, and you can read the documentation here.

Possible use case: If you have users in your apps to which you need to send payouts, there could be a minimum withdrawal amount. Or, you have the option to transfer the funds internally to their TelePay account, which is free.

Some facts about Hive

So, don't get afraid if deposits on TelePay take a little time to confirm, that's normal, we're just waiting for the block to be closed.

It has proven to be scalable, as it has just achieved 100M posts and comments on the blockchain. Also, during the latest 5+ years, it has demonstrated to be a resilient ecosystem, with hundreds of apps and supported by a growing community.

TelePay vs. HivePay

There is currently an official payments gateway in the Hive ecosystem, called HivePay, but we respectfully consider it not enough, very hard to implement (the author has done it before in other projects), and not friendly for devs.

The solution we offer with TelePay is easier and will help you receive payments and send payouts in a matter of seconds. You have our word.

HivePay is hard to integrate, not well documented, and not developer-friendly.

What's new on TelePay?

You now have two new wallets in your merchants and personal accounts: the Hive and HBD wallets. There are no testnet or mainnet networks, only one main network, so, be careful, you'll be using real money.

You can normally topup your balance, transfer funds, withdraw back to the blockchain, create invoices with new tokens, via the Dashboard or the REST API, transfer via public profiles, and the entire TelePay experience.

Create your first wallet in TON

As we explained in our launch post, TON is currently the fastest-growing blockchain ecosystem. This is the first post of a series on how to start and grow in TON.

This first post is aimed on help you create your first wallet.

What's a cryptocurrencies wallet?

Just like you save your money in a bank, a wallet is where you save your cryptocurrencies, in a blockchain. This is a way to understand it, with the difference that the bank is a centralized authority that can freeze your money or take it away from you, and use it for the bank operations. The blockchain is decentralized, there is not a central authority and only you can access your funds and move them. You do it by having your secret words (in TON case, 24 words).

Which wallet should I use?

In the TON apps catalog, you can see many wallets listed, some of them guarded by a 3rd party platform, and some others, only guarded by you.

Steps to create a wallet

This article covers how to create your wallet using the web version via wallet.ton.org. The first step: open this link, you will see something like this:

Click on the "Create my wallet" button, and you'll be taken to the next screen.

Then, click on "Continue" and you'll get your 24 secret words. Is highly important that you save them in a secure and secret place, and do not share them with anyone. If someone, somehow, accesses your secret words, you can lose your wallet funds. The secret words are the key to your wallet.

Once you take note of your secret words, you can click on "Continue", and you could get an alert like this. Hit "I'm sure" if you saved your secret words, or do it if not already.

To confirm you actually noted your words, you'll be asked three random words. Write them and click "Continue".

The next step is setting up a password to prevent someone from accessing your wallet if, for some reason, your device (computer or mobile) gets compromised. Write a secure password, confirm it and click "Continue". You'll actually need to save the password also in a secure place. We recommend BitWarden.

Congrats, your wallet is now created 🎉

Your wallet is ready to use, now, click on "View my wallet" to continue.

Here's your wallet. The first time you use it, with 0.00 TON 💎, the only option available is "Receive", because the wallet is not initialized. Once you transfer funds to it, you'll be able to send funds, unlocking the "Send" option.

The Open Network is currently the fastest growing blockchain ecosystem, originally conceived by the Durov brothers (Nikolai Durov and Pavel Durov), which was sadly discontinued in 2020 due to legal issues.

After that, the project was taken by a community and the TON Foundation came up to save the project and continue developing it. One year later, Durov announced its support for the project, now with a new and independent approach. This simple post in Telegram made the entire ecosystem viral, and it's receiving a lot of attention globally.

We've been following closely the TON project, looking up achievement after achievement, breaking its own records in a number of wallets, transactions, market cap, token price, and community.

And that's why we decided to go with TON, it was the right timing to join the greatest and fastest-growing ecosystem in blockchain & web 3.0.

Also, we've been researching the whole TON apps ecosystem, trying to find something like TelePay, and we seem to be the first payments gateway on TON, with a web dashboard included.

Why TelePay

Originally, our product was named "TelePagos" in Spanish, meaning "payments in distance, or tele-payments". But we took our approach beyond to a more international community and came up with the new name: "TelePay".

We're huge fans of Telegram and have been processing payments in there, via Telegram bots, for some time now. That's why we thought about mixing "Telegram" + "payments" = "TelePay".

Even though our product was originally intended only for Telegram, we see there are bots like @wallet and @CryptoBot, and wanted to offer a competitive advantage: the web dashboard, a new experience like Stripe, PayPal, or another payments gateway, where you can manage your invoices and funds via a web interface.

Also, the Telegram bot integration is coming up shortly in our roadmap.

History

A condensed extract of the milestones in TelePay.

August 2021. The team started thinking about the project.
December 6th, 2021. Announced the project will be executed.
March 2nd, 2022. The project core is ready. For 3 months, the team was designing and studying the market.
March 29th, 2022. A minimal viable product is ready.
April 1st, 2022. The product is live, but not launched. Started internal beta testing.
April 8th, 2022:

First business integrated with the payments gateway. Payments are working smoothly and are ready to be used in production by other merchants.
Released v0.0.3 of the telepay-python SDK, the first production-ready version.
Received profile verification here in our Teletype blog.

April 10th, 2022. The payment experience was improved, thanks to feedback received from our beta testers.
April 12th, 2022. Public launch. 🎉

Features

Today, we're publicly launching our first production-ready version for businesses to start accepting payments, firstly via Toncoin.

Some of the features in this first version:

Log in with Telegram.
Public profiles, to which you can donate/pay/transfer TON. Example: https://telepay.cash/to/TelePay
Deposits (topup), transfers from/to any internal wallet, in TON. All this is off-chain, instantly and without any fee.
Withdrawals from internal wallets to external wallets, in TON, with associated on-chain fee and processing fee.
Create invoices via API, allowing to attach metadata and redirection links. Or via the dashboard, in a graphical interface.
Consult the API to fetch wallet balance, and transfer TON, among other options.
Set up webhooks to receive notification events to your third-party app when invoices are confirmed/canceled/expired.
Automatically retry webhooks sent but failed due to connection issues with your server.
Pay invoices via the hosted checkout page experience, using the internal tokens or by an on-chain payment, using a TON wallet like TonKeeper or another supporting the ton:// protocol.
List, cancel & delete invoices.
View invoice details.
Manage many merchants associated with an account, where any merchant can have its own invoices and wallets.
Supported networks: TON testnet and mainnet.
Notifications are delivered straight to your Telegram inbox.

Among other features, this is just the beginning of all the things we have for the roadmap.
