Extension of /system partition to install larger gsi on Redmi Note 8 Pro

⚠️ Advertencia:

Guia mejor explicada y detallada para usuarios que quieran instalar gsi de mayor tamaño, el metodo explicado aqui se ha testeado multiples veces, sin embargo, cualquier cosa puede pasar, ya sea por no seguir bien los procedimientos o ocurra algo inesperado, en mi caso eh perdido el imei y batalle un rato para solucionarlo pero al final eh creado una guia para ello. Otra cosa que quiero mencionar, los colaboradores de esta nota no se hacen responsables de cualquier daño que pueda pasar en tu dispositivo ya que al hacer estos movimientos se toca de manera muy profunda el dispositivo, ve con cuidado y ten a la mano una pc con los archivos del unbrick.

Better explained and detailed guide for users who want to install larger gsi, the method explained here has been tested multiple times, however, anything can happen, either by not following the procedures well or something unexpected happens, in my case I lost the imei and I struggled for a while to solve it but in the end I created a guide for it. Another thing I want to mention, the contributors of this note are not responsible for any damage that may happen in your device because when you make these movements you touch very deeply the device, go carefully and have on hand a pc with the files of the unbrick.

Requisitos:

1. Twrp basado en Miui 12.5 (Recomiendo BRP3.5.2v3.6 | Twrp Unificado 3.6)
2. Tarjeta SD o OTG
3. Archivos de extension de /system (Si tienes 64GB de memoria interna, usa el de 64GB, lo mismo para 128Gb, usa el archivo 128Gb si tienes 128GB de memoria interna)
4. Tiempo disponible en caso de que ocurra un imprevisto (20minutos-3hrs)

Instrucciones:

• Ingresar al TWRP
• Realizar los pasos de la nota Copia de seguridad del Imei
• Una vez terminada la copia de seguridad del imei: Ir a Install > seleccionar el almacenamiento de SD o de OTG > buscar el archivo de extension y flashearlo

• Terminando, ir a Wipe > Format Data > escribir Yes y darle enter, ahora, entrar a advanced wipe > seleccionar la casilla "Data" y deslizar en "Swipe to Wipe"

• Al finalizar, regresar al Menu > entrar a Reboot & Seleccionamos Recovery
• Despues del Reboot, ir a Wipe > Advanced Wipe > Seleccionar la casilla de "System" y deslizamos en "Swipe to Wipe"
• Volvemos a hacer Format Data, despues de hacerlo, regresamos a Advanced Wipe, le damos en la casilla "Data" y volvemos a deslizar en "Swipe to Wipe", al finalizar, reiniciamos en Recovery de Nuevo.

Instalando ROM Aosp o MIUI

• Cuando ya estemos en TWRP, ya podremos instalar una AOSP O Miui con total normalidad, con este ultimo el procedimiento cambia un poco:
• Ir a Install > Entrar al almacenamiento OTG/SD Card > Buscar la Rom Miui y flashear
• Regresar al menu y entrar a Wipe > Format Data > Escribir Yes y darle a Enter
• Volver al menu e entrar a Advanced > seleccionar "close avb" flashear y terminando, seleccionar "disable twrp reemplace" y flashear
• Finalizando, vamos a Reboot y reiniciamos en System.

ROM Aosp solo es Instalar y darle format data. Si todo salio bien, la particion /system se ha extendido aproximadamente 7.5Gb, lo que es bueno ya que el antiguo limite de 3.5Gb, limitaba las gsi que se podian instalar en el begonia.

¿Mi limite regreso a 3.5GB, hay solucion?

Para comprobar si tu particion /system aumento con exito, descargar DiskInfo desde la Play Store, ahora debes de fijarte en el tamaño de /system.

En la particion /system me indica que tengo 3.29GB de uso y 102MB libres, para solucionarlo, debemos regresar al TWRP y realizar los siguientes pasos:

• Ingresar al TWRP > dirigirse a Wipe > Advance Wipe > seleccionamos la casilla "System" y entramos a "Repair o Change File System"

• Aqui adentro nos mostrara el tamaño actual de system, ahora, le damos en el boton "Rezise File System" y deslizamos.

• Terminando, reiniciamos en Recovery y volvemos a entrar al mismo apartado, ahora te debera de aparecer que la particion systema tiene arriba de 7Gb

• Despues de comprobar, reiniciamos en "System" y si si deseas volver a verificar, utiliza DiskInfo y veras que ahora tendras mas espacio en la particion mencionada.

En ROM Aosp solo es Instalar y darle format data. si todo salio bien, la particion /system se ha extendido aproximadamente 7.5Gb, lo que es bueno ya que el antiguo limite de 3.5Gb, limitaba las gsi que se podian instalar en el begonia.

📝Notas:

• Para regresar a Miui por medio de fastboot, realizar el metodo del unbrick-free para flashear la miui (Vas a perder la extension de la particion /system)
• En caso de haber perdido el imei, usa la nota de Imei Restore (Debes tener una copia de seguridad primero, si no lo tienes, la nota se vuelve inefenctiva y tendras que buscar otro metodo)

Requirements:

• Twrp based on Miui 12.5 (I recommend BRP3.5.2v3.6 | Twrp Unified 3.6)
• SD or OTG card
• /system extension files (If you have 64GB of internal memory, use the 64GB, same for 128Gb, use the 128Gb file if you have 128GB of internal memory)
• Time available in case of unforeseen events (20minutes-3hrs)

Instructions:

• Enter TWRP
• Perform the steps in the note Imei backup
• Once the imei backup is finished: Go to Install > select SD or OTG storage > find the extension file and flash.

• When finished, go to Wipe > Format Data > type Yes and hit enter, now, go to advanced wipe > select "Data" checkbox and slide "Swipe to Wipe".

• When finished, go back to Menu > enter Reboot & Select Recovery
• After Reboot, go to Wipe > Advanced Wipe > Select the "System" checkbox and click on "Swipe to Wipe".
• Format Data again, after doing so, go back to Advanced Wipe, hit the "Data" checkbox and swipe again to "Swipe to Wipe", when finished, reboot to Recovery again.

Installing ROM AOSP or MIUI

When we are already in TWRP, we can install an AOSP or Miui normally, with the latter the procedure changes a little:

• Go to Install > Enter OTG/SD Card storage > Search for the Miui ROM and flash it.
• Return to the menu and go to Wipe > Format Data > Type Yes and hit Enter Go back to the menu and enter Advanced > select "close avb" flash and finishing, select "disable twrp replace" and flash
• Finishing, go to Reboot and reboot to System.

In ROM Aosp is just Install and format data. If all went well, the /system partition has been extended by about 7.5Gb, which is good because the old limit of 3.5Gb, limited the gsi that could be installed on the begonia.

My limit is back to 3.5GB, is there a solution?

To check if your /system partition has been successfully increased, download DiskInfo from the Play Store, now you should look at the size of /system.

In the /system partition tells me that I have 3.29GB of use and 102MB free, to fix it, we must return to TWRP and perform the following steps:

Enter TWRP > go to Wipe > Advance Wipe > select the "System" checkbox and enter "Repair or Change File System".

Here inside it will show us the current system size, now, click on the "Rezise File System" button and slide.

Finishing, restart in Recovery and re-enter the same section, now it should appear that the system partition has more than 7Gb.

After checking, reboot into "System" and if you want to check again, use DiskInfo and you will see that you will now have more space in the mentioned partition.

📝Notes:

• To get back to Miui via fastboot, perform the unbrick-free method to flash the miui (You will lose the /system partition extension).
• In case you have lost the imei, use the Imei Restore note (You must have a backup first, if you don't have it, the note becomes ineffective and you will have to find another method)

Copia de Seguridad del Imei:

1. Ingresar al TWRP (Recomiendo BRP3.5.2v3.6 | Twrp Unificado 3.6)
2. Ir a Backup > Seleccionar nvcfg, nvram, nvdata, persist, protect_f & protect_s
3. En el apartado de "Name:" vamos a asignarle un nombre, por ejemplo, yo le he puesto "IMEI Backup" pero le puedes poner "Backup importante" "Rebellion747 es gay" o el nombre que quieras. Usa tu imaginacion.
4. Entramos a Select Storage > Seleccionamos un almacenamiento externo (Puede ser una MicroSD o un OTG) le damos ok y en la parte de Swipe to Backup simplemente deslizamos.
5. Una vez que el twrp nos diera un "successfull" en la parte de arriba, nos dirigimos a la carpeta del backup, en mi caso es /external_sd/TWRP/BACKUPS/. Para dirigirse a esa ubicacion utiliza Install > seleccionas el almacenamiento externo y buscas la carpeta.Una vez ahi entramos y seguimos adentrandonos hasta localizar la carpeta del backup.

Ahora ya tienes una copia de seguridad por si llegas a cagarla y por x situacion se te borre el imei, abajo de esta guia habra un metodo para recuperarlo. Experimenta con cuidado y recuerda: "El Brick se aproxima"

Imei Backup:

1. Login to TWRP (I recommend BRP3.5.2v3.6 | Twrp Unified 3.6)
2. Go to Backup > Select nvcfg, nvram, nvdata, persist, protect_f & protect_s
3. In the "Name:" section we are going to assign a name, for example, I have put "IMEI Backup" but you can put "Important Backup" "Rebellion747 is gay" or the name you want. Use your imagination.

Recuperacion del Imei:

Si tienes problemas al restaurar el imei desde twrp, sigue esta guia:

• Seguir la guia de instalacion de MTKClient
• Una vez tengas instalado el MTKClient: Ingresar a su carpeta (Buscarlo desde el administrador de archivos) y abrir un terminal y escribir el comando "pyhton mtk_gui" o "python3 mtk_gui" sin comillas ambos comandos, despues, entraras al programa el cual se ve asi:

• Una vez aqui, debemos apagar totalmente nuestro dispositivo, a continuacion debemos conectarlo a la pc y pulsar vol+ (Como el paso 3 el unbrick). Si te sale el logo de redmi, debes desconectarlo y dejar de pulsar vol+ y continuar presionando power. Cuando se vuelva a apagar la pantalla, conectarlo rapidamente y pulsar vol+. Se debe repetir el procedimiento hasta que en el telefono que muestra el programa, muestre la animacion de varios circulos dando vueltas, ahi tienes que dejar de presionar vol+ y power.
• Como metodo facil, recomiendo entrar a fastboot, despues presionar vol + & power hasta que se apague la pantalla. Cuando se apague,conectar el cable y cuando aparezca la animacion en el telefono del programa, dejar de presionar power y vol+

• Terminando de cargar, te saldra el debug log, ahora, nos dirigimos a la seccion "Erase Partition(s)"
• Seleccionamos las particiones del imei, le damos al boton de "Erase Partition(s)" y despues verificamos que todo saliera correcto.

• Despues de aqui, cerramos el programa, desconectamos el begonia y precionamos el boton power y el boton vol + para acceder a twrp. Cuando aparezca la pantalla de "Redmi" solo dejamos vol+ presionado.

• Ahora vamos a Restore > Seleccionamos el almacenamiento donde tengamos nuestro backup, seleccionamos la carpeta del mismo y deslizamos para restaurar.
• Terminando esto, ir a Reboot > System y Reiniciar.
• Ahora entramos a nuestra rom, (la mia es miui al momento de hacer esta nota), buscamos el apartado del Imei y ya deberia de aparecer tu Imei.

📝Notas:

1. Eh utilizado MTK Client en Linux pero no deberia ser un problema con Windows 10, puede que cambie el metodo para usarlo un poco pero de ahi eh visto que es similar. (Un poco de pereza de mi parte)
2. El metodo parece funcionar bien, lo he hecho 5 veces, contando esta ultima para sacar imagenes y checar unos detalles antes de hacer esta guia. Cualquier inconveniente, mencionarlo por el chat de gsi.
3. Se utilizo su modo grafico para que sea entendible lo maximo posible
4. MTK Client tambien sirve para bloquear o desbloquear bootloader, cuenta con soporte para muchos mtk.

Recovering the Imei

If you have problems restoring the imei from twrp, follow this guide:

• Follow the MTKClient installation guide.
• Once you have installed the MTKClient: Enter its folder (Search it from the file manager) and open a terminal and type the command "pyhton mtk_gui" or "python3 mtk_gui" without quotes both commands, then, you will enter the program which looks like this:

• Once here, we must completely turn off our device, then we must connect it to the pc and press vol+ (As step 3 the unbrick). If you get the redmi logo, you must disconnect it and stop pressing vol + and continue pressing power. When the screen turns off again, connect it quickly and press vol +. You must repeat the procedure until the phone that shows the program, shows the animation of several circles spinning, then you have to stop pressing vol + and power.
• As an easy method, I recommend entering fastboot, then press vol + & power until the screen turns off. When it turns off, connect the cable and when the animation appears on the phone of the program, stop pressing power and vol +.

• After loading, you will see the debug log, now, go to the "Erase Partition(s)" section.
• Select the partitions of the imei, click on the "Erase Partition(s)" button and then verify that everything is correct.

• After this, close the program, disconnect the begonia and press the power button and the vol + button to access twrp. When the "Redmi" screen appears just leave vol + pressed.

• Now we go to Restore > Select the storage where we have our backup, select the backup folder and slide to restore.
• Finishing this, go to Reboot > System and Reboot.
• Now we enter our rom, (mine is miui at the time of this note), look for the Imei section and already should appear your Imei.

📝Notes:

1. I have used MTK Client on Linux but it shouldn't be a problem with Windows 10, I might change the method to use it a bit but from there I have seen that it is similar (a bit lazy on my part).
2. The method seems to work fine, I have done it 5 times, counting this last one to take pictures and check some details before making this guide. Any inconvenience, mention it by gsi chat.
3. I used its graphical mode to make it as understandable as possible.
4. MTK Client is also used to lock or unlock bootloader, it has support for many mtk.

2. Descargar el SafetynetMOD desde este enlace
3. Despues de instalar, entrar a la app de Magisk e ir al engranaje de la esquina superior derecha, buscar la opcion de Zygisk y activarla, ahora regresar al inicio, ir a Modulos > Instalar desde almacenamiento ( o al icono de caja) > buscar el SafetyNetMOD fix, seleccionarlo y Darle a Reiniciar
4. Descargar Play Integrity Api Checker y entrar a la aplicacion y darle en el boton "Check". Verificar que los primeros 2 apartados aparezcan en verde y habras terminado.

📝 Notas:

• Magisk Delta Regreso la opcion extinta de Magisk Hide, para los nuevos usuarios, con esa opcion puedes ocultarle el root a aplicaciones/juegos que tengan problemas con el root, ademas, tambien fue agregada la opcion inversa (esto es nuevo) donde tu eliges que apps quieres que detecten el root, ademas, puedes ponerle Monet Theme para que se vea bonito.

En caso de tener problemas con Meets_Device_Integrity:

1. Entrar a Magisk Delta > entrar al engranaje de la parte superior derecha > activar la opcion de Magisk Hide y entrar en "Configurar Magisk Hide".
2. En la parte superior derecha darle un toque y habilitar la opcion de "Mostrar Apps del Sistema" y con la lupa que se encuentra a un lado, buscar "Play Store" "Servicios de Google" y "Carrier Services" (Este ultimo puede que no se encuentre debido al paquete de Gapps) seleccionar las aplicaciones y marcar TODAS las casillas.
3. Volver a la aplicacion Play Integrity y ejecutar la prueba. ahora deberia aparecer en verde.

Algo que puede ayudar: (En Teoria, no ha sido testeado de momento)

• Usando un Pixel Prop compatible con tu version de android (ejemplo, si tengo a11, a12.1 y A13 puedo usar un pixel prop de A13), entras a magisk y lo instalas como cualquier modulo y reinicias. Despues del reinicio ejecuta la prueba en Play Integrity y verifica si aparece en verdadero.

⚠️ Advertencia: Este paso puede romper la sim , para solucionarlo consulta la guia fix sim ⚠️

Fix Safetynet + CTS en GSI PHH Trebble: (En caso de no poder pasar la prueba Safetynet y Play Integrity)

• Usando un explorador root (Solid Explorer Recomendado), accedemos a system, buscamos la carpeta phh y borramos el archivo "secure" y el archivo "empy" y reiniciamos. Despues del Reinicio vuelve a hacer la prueba Play Integrity. (Gracias a Rahul por este paso).
• Para solucionar problemas con GPay, entrar a esta guia de @Tbelizz1671 Alexey Belov

3. After installing, go into the Magisk app and go to the gear in the top right corner, find the Zygisk option and activate it, now go back to home, go to Modules > Install from storage (or the box icon) > find the SafetyNetMOD fix, select it and hit Reset.
4. Download Play Integrity Api Checker and enter the application and click on the "Check" button. Verify that the first 2 sections are green and you are done.

📝 Notes:

• Magisk Delta Magisk Hide option is back, for new users, with this option you can hide the root to applications/games that have problems with root, also, was also added the reverse option (this is new) where you choose which apps you want to detect the root, also, you can put Monet Theme to make it look nice.

In case of problems with Meets_Device_Integrity:

1. Enter Magisk Delta > go to the top right gear > activate the Magisk Hide option and enter "Configure Magisk Hide".
2. On the top right tap and enable the "Show System Apps" option and with the magnifying glass on the side, look for "Play Store" "Google Services" and "Carrier Services" (the latter may not be found due to the Gapps package) select the applications and check ALL the boxes.
3. Go back to the Play Integrity application and run the test. It should now be green.

Something that can help: (in theory, it has not been tested yet)

• Using a Pixel Prop compatible with your android version (example, if I have a11, a12.1 and A13 I can use a pixel prop from A13), go into magisk and install it like any other module and reboot. After the reboot run the test in Play Integrity and check if it shows true.

Fix Safetynet + CTS in GSI PHH Trebble: (In case of failure of Safetynet and Play Integrity test)

• Using a root explorer (Solid Explorer recommended), access the system, look for the phh folder and delete the "secure" file and the "empy" file and reboot. After reboot, Play Integrity test again (Thanks to Rahul for this step).

• It can now be installed on devices with less than 3.5Gb and more than 2.6Gb of space in the System partition (Warning: Test at your own risk, this gsi debloat was tested ONLY ON REDMI NOTE 8 PRO (BEGONIA), if you are going to test on another device, be aware that you may bricked it if you perform the procedure on your device differently.
