As coronavirus is spreading faster around the globe, the system needs some parallel therapies to cure patients and one such therapy is Plasma therapy.

A team of Chinese scientists have recently isolated several antibodies and said that these are “extremely effective” to block the ability of new coronavirus to enter cells. They claim that this could be helpful to treat or prevent COVID-19.

COVID-19 originated in Wuhan, China and it is spreading across the globe in a very short period. There is no proven treatment to cure the disease but there are large number of researchers, organizations or companies around the world busy in developing and evaluating therapies for COVID-19.

Even if companies succeed to make a new drug, it will take time of around two years for the process stages such as approvals, manufacturing and logistic & supply chain. But as this coronavirus is spreading faster, the system needs some parallel therapies. And one such therapy is Plasma therapy.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published the information to guide clinicians regarding therapeutics options for COVID-19 patients. This document provides information on two of the approved drugs, chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine and one of the investigational agents – remdesivir, currently in use in the United States.

Last month, China National Biotec Group (CNBG) said that plasma from former patients was used to treat dozens of critically ill patients at various hospitals in Wuhan—the Chinese city where the coronavirus emerged— and the results of this attempt was positive. According to the company’s research, many recovered patients have produced specific antibodies which can be used against the virus.

On March 30, Houston Methodist revealed that it has received FDA approval to become the first academic medical center in the nation to transfuse donated plasma from a recovered COVID-19 patient into a critically ill patient. Under FDA guidelines, Houston Methodist’s convalescent serum therapy treatment is classified as an emergency investigational new drug protocol (eIND) that requires FDA approval for each patient infused with donated convalescent serum.

“Convalescent serum therapy could be a vital treatment route, because unfortunately there is relatively little to offer many patients except supportive care, and the ongoing clinical trials are going to take a while. We don’t have that much time,” said Eric Salazar, M.D., Ph.D., principal investigator and a physician scientist in the Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine at the Houston Methodist Hospital and Research Institute.

But, as COVID-19 patients are rising exponentially around the globe, the healthcare system will need enough blood and plasma. To increase the availability, biotech companies and blood banks are appealing cured people to donate their blood plasma to help treat others.

Dr. Salazar also informed that a review of COVID-19 patients’ charts indicates that nearly two-thirds of the patients may meet the criteria to donate plasma. Patients with critical underlying conditions and advanced age will not be eligible to donate. Another virologist in Shanghai stated that even if the treatment is safe and effective, it will be limited by the number of patients who are able to donate blood.

As per the today’s data, coronavirus has infected more than 937,130 and killed approximately 47,267 patients. Almost all countries are witnessing financial crisis because of this pandemic.

Growing cases of anxiety, depression, and suicide have increased concerns regarding mental health worldwide; therefore, augmenting demand for mental health pharmaceuticals and related therapies. For instance, mental and neurological disorders account for 10% of the global disease burden, the WHO.

The World Federation for Mental Health appeals to all countries and their governments to ensure that national mental health plans are designed to manage the mental health consequences of the global coronavirus health emergency.

Mental health is a precious commodity and a national asset and should be prioritised in the same way as physical health.

Many countries are currently experiencing the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 outbreak. The situation has become dire as we search for a vaccine to prevent more infections and stop the loss of thousands of lives. In many affected countries all health care services are currently subjected to enormous stress and extraordinary challenges while mental health and psychosocial support needs of people ‒ of those already using services as well as citizens experiencing insurmountable levels of stress ‒ continue to rise. Everyone is affected and no-one escapes the impact on our mental health health professionals working at the coalface of providing care yet suffering in silence.

It is undisputed that the current COVID-19 emergency will have long-lasting consequences and effects on the mental health of all people, affecting the general population with astonishingly heightened stress. On the other hand, impoverishment of services, their reduction and mergers, and the shortage of staff that are already present due to the economic crisis place mental health at the bottom of the list of health priorities.

The mental health of those with pre-existing conditions and disorders before the pandemic is of great concern. They are some of the most vulnerable people to the contagion and may lack access to proper information and medical care. Their human rights, safety, protection, and even their environment, are at risk.

There are some examples of psychiatric hospital units that have been converted into COVID-19 departments while there is severe and limited access to community mental health centres and facilities that in some areas have been closed. Outpatient services are restricted to emergencies only, limiting the offer of services. Few mobile teams are still operating in communities to assist people with psychosocial needs and social priorities.

It is a design made by inserting ink, dyes, and pigments, either indelible or temporary, into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment. Though nowadays, there is a popular trend of getting a tattoo, which gives rise to aftercare tattoo products such as moisturizers, wax, lotions, balms, soaps, ointments, and soothing gels. These have given rise to many more companies offering new differentiation of tattoo products.

The rising use of tattoo aftercare products and increasing investments on product differentiation will spur the demand for the tattoo aftercare products market. Also, a rise in technology, urbanization, social media marketing, and disposable income with anticipated changes in the government regulations related to the operation of tattoo aftercare products will increase the market value of the tattoo aftercare products market. However, skin allergy, including pigmentation loss and scars in individuals due to tattoo and side effects due to the use of aftercare products, may restrict the growth of the market in the forecasted period.

A tattoo is more than just a piece of art and a way to assert your personal style. It’s a medical procedure, because the artist uses a needle to insert the ink underneath your skin. Any time you open the skin, you leave yourself vulnerable to scarring and infections.

Caring for your tattoo can prevent these complications and ensure that it heals properly. Both you and your artist play equal roles in this process. Along with going to a licensed and reputable tattoo artist, you need to take care of your new tattoo at home.

How to care for your tattoo

Aftercare starts as soon as your tattoo is done. The artist should apply a thin layer of petroleum ointment over the tattoo, and then cover the area in a bandage or plastic wrap. This covering prevents bacteria from getting into your skin. It also protects the tattoo from rubbing on your clothes and getting irritated.

Keep the dressing on for a few hours. It will help absorb any fluid or excess ink that leaks from the tattoo.

After a few hours, you can remove the bandage. Wash your hands first with lukewarm water and soap. Then gently wash the tattoo with fragrance-free soap and water.

Pat your skin dry with a soft cloth. Apply a small amount of petroleum ointment to the tattoo. You can keep the bandage off at this point to let your skin breathe.

Tattoo aftercare products

Clean Towel, Moisturizing Lotion

While your tattoo heals, you should:

wear sun-protective clothing whenever you go outside

call your tattoo artist or doctor if you have any signs of infection or other problems

You shouldn’t:

cover your tattoo with sunblock until it’s fully healed

scratch or pick at the tattoo

wear tight clothing over the tattoo

go swimming or immerse your body in water (showers are fine)

Bacillus Calmette‐Guérin (BCG) vaccine is the only vaccine available for the prevention of tuberculosis (TB). This vaccine is generally administered to children at birth in countries with high incidence of TB. However, in low incidence regions, only children at high risk are typically immunized, whereas adults are generally not immunized. However, adults (up to the age of 35) who are frequently exposed to drug-resistant TB may also be given BCG vaccine.

What is BCG vaccine?

BCG vaccine - or Bacillus Calmette-Guerin to give its full name - is a jab given to prevent people from catching tuberculosis (TB).

It is often given to children between the ages of 10 and 14, but babies and those under the age of 35 can also receive one if they are most at risk.

For young children, it is recommended they receive the injection if they are in areas where the risk of TB is higher, or if they have a parent or grandparent born in a country where the rate is considered high.

Evidence has shown that the BCG vaccine does not work for those over 35.

Why didn't everyone in the UK have BCG vaccine?

BCG vaccinations took place from 1953, with children between the ages of 10 and 14 receiving one.

But this was stopped in July 2005 as it was no longer cost effective for the number of cases that rose.

In 1953, 94 children were immunised to prevent a case of TB, where as in 1988, 12,000 children would be vaccinated to prevent a single case.

The injection is still available on the NHS for those most at risk - but no longer as a regular jab for all children.

According to drug type, the immune BCG segment accounted for the highest share in 2017 and is also the fastest growing segment growing at a CAGR of 4.9% during the BCG vaccines sales market forecast period. The factors contributing toward the growth of this segment include the role of BCG in effectively helping TB prevention and as of now there is no substitute vaccine for immune BCG.

Many research organizations are working toward finding new therapies to treat organ failure and repair cells of damaged tissues. For instance, in 2017, researchers at Penn State University discovered a revolutionary way to print tissues and organs with the use of an “electrospinning printer” that spins fibers seeded with cells to create fiber layers. This technology is both cheaper and offers an opportunity to spin polymer fibers such as collagen layers with precision and in a more controlled manner.

Apart from this, Tissue engineering has an immense potential to revolutionize regenerative medicine. The main objective of tissue engineering is to improve the biological functions of damaged or missing organs and tissues. The research activities related to tissue engineering have expanded from the repairing, replacement, and regeneration of blood vessels, bone, and organs such as heart and kidney to the delicate nervous system.
