Myth: Germans’ favorite food is sausages and favorite drink is beer?
Truth: Upfront: I was born and raised in the beautiful northern part of Germany. The cultural prejudice of “sausages and beer” is a picture mostly characterized by Bavaria and the Oktoberfest. We in northern Germany always believe that Bavaria is more Austria than Germany🙃
But apart from that will you never be invited to a party without good beer. Our favorite evening event after work is definitely a Feierabendbierchen (“evening beer”). Everybody has their own favorite beer brand, which means discussing, if the party host has the right beer brand, is always a fixed component.
And not to forget: beer is just the perfect drink for our beloved barbecue!

Myth: Germans are very tidy, and they like to plan everything.
Truth: Yes, I would say this actually accounts for most Germans. We have saying which would be translated as something like “we clean even under the couch when our cleaning lady comes”.

Myth: German guys don’t make the first step.
Truth: Well, I’m very interested where this prejudice comes from ‘cause that is really not true. I would even be so bold to say that it’s the opposite. We always brag about our feminism but when it comes to dating, we still like the boys to make the first step☺️

If you ever have the time and you speak German, search for “Realer Irrsinn” on Youtube.
Nothing describes our country better than this😁!

LH team❤️

Myth: All Norwegians can do ski and the first thing they teach their kids is skiing
Truth: This is a myth and only a myth. Not all Norwegians like skiing. What’s a fact is that a lot of Norwegians do. In winter skiing is a practical way to get around, and a lot of kids like it. Before iPods and streaming services, an easy way to entertain kids was to dress them warm and throw them out in the snow, to entertain themselves. If you like skiing, skiing is fun, so a lot of kids chose skis in these situations, so skiing was a hobby that was curated from a young age. Kids who didn’t choose the skis have always been forced to ski in school, through the annual ski day(s). The famous Norwegian author Jens Bjørneboe once said, “One of the inalienable advantages of at last coming of age, is to not have to ski”.

Myth: Norwegians respect personal space, so they build houses very far from each other.
Truth: Norway has a very spread population traditionally. People moved where the food was, and where they got to land. There are fishing villages, and small farming areas and you may wonder why anyone found those places in the first place. In rural areas, there may be a long distance to the next-door neighbor, but in cities, towns, and villages there is no difference from any other country, in this corner of the world. The distance between houses in rural areas may be a reason why many Norwegians, as long as Swedes, Fins and Russians are so good at skiing from a young age. You need skis to get to your friends and school, but to get back to target, not because of respect for personal space.

Myth: Norwegians don’t like foreigners.
Truth: This may be true in a way, but this isn’t exclusively Norwegian. Of course, many Norwegians don’t have problems with foreigners as well. The thing about Norwegians is that we have a long history of not liking what’s new and unknown to us. Norway was against the v-style in ski jumping, skating in skiing, alpine skiing, woman skiing, women ski jumping, glass fiber skis, joint start, trail grooming machines, even the winter Olympics (can you imagine?) Norway was against it when it was presented. If something is new and unknown, you can bet your average Norwegian won’t like it.

Myth: It’s always cold in Norway, including summer.
Truth: Norway has a diverse climate, and this is not something that should be generalized. Some places are hot, some are cold, some are both, and it may vary from day to day. In 2009 I was at a festival, on the 2nd of July, I woke up to the white ground and a tent almost collapsed from the amount of snow. The next weekend I was at a festival 100 km away from the first, and it was never below 20 degrees, night and day. In general, we can say, if we do what we shouldn’t do, the lowlands in the south and middle parts of the country have warm summer. The mountains in the south and northern Norway are cold, but there may be normal and even extreme heat as well.

LH team❤️

Hi! What's up?🎉

Let's go! 🎇

Myth: It is always cold and there’s always much snow in Canada.
Truth: False, during summer we have really good weather, the temperature can go to 34 Celsius 🤩

Myth: Canadians speak English.
Truth: True, most of the Canadian population speaks English and a small fraction speaks French.

Myth: All Canadians give honor to the Queen of Great Britain.
Truth: I would say false, because we don’t really give allegiance to the queen of Great Britain, but since we are in the common wealth and we have a constitutional federal monarchy, the queen of Great Britain is considered as the highest power in Canada (but it's more true just on paper than in reality. She doesn't control Canada 😅)

Myth: There are a lot of immigrants in Canada.
Truth: True, Canada has always been a place where immigrants were welcomed, and where we helped them integrate the Canadian society! The capital of Ontario, which is Toronto, is considered one of the most multicultural and cosmopolitan city in the world 😊 Multiculturalism is part of the deep identity of Canada.

Myth: Canadians eat everything with maple syrup.
Truth: False. We don’t add maple syrup in everything 😂 but it’s true that a lot of people use maple syrup as a substitute to sugar in many recipes 🤤
The only exception that I would know is when we go to the sugar shack, there we put maple syrup on everything 😂

Myth: Canadians, same as Americans, are not into traveling abroad.
Truth: False, Canadians love to travel and I think that in many case it’s linked to our multicultural culture and our openness! Also, in many cases, we travel to escape the cold weather during winter.

Myth: The major part of Canada is taken by mountains & lakes.
Truth: True! I think that 90% of the Canadian population lives within 150 miles of the US border, which means that the rest of the country is unoccupied and is mostly lakes and mountains. Fun fact, Canada has more lakes than any other country in the world, I think 🤩

Myth: Canadians in general are very alike with Americans.
Truth: False! Canadians are so different than the Americans! It’s often considered as insult, as Canadian, to be compared with Americans 😂 We are different on many elements: we are so more welcoming, more polite, more open-minded; a majority of Canadian are for environmental reforms, the government of Canada do a lot to help the poor, we have a free health system and a lot more things 😅

LH team💕

Hey, guys!✨

Myth: French people don’t know English and don’t even what to learn it.
Truth: False! The new generation is very open-minded, so we are open for learning new languages. Thanks to universities and partnerships with schools around the world, you can travel and learn. This was true for our parents and grandparents.

Myth: You eat frogs and snails.
Truth: True! So you have to know that some people don't like it, but personally I love it! It's really good when you're used to it since you were little.

Myth: Paris is the most romantic city in the world.
Truth: It depends. It is a common opinion, but when you find yourself in the city, you will see that it is not as perfect as everyone says. I prefer small villages. Someone says that we have "the most beautiful villages" and I agree with this more than with the statement about Paris. Paris is too big. You quickly get lost in it, unlike smaller cities that have charm with their historical center like Lyon or Annecy.
For me the most romantic city in the world would be Verona in Italy. The city of Romeo and Juliet.

Myth: You eat croissants and drink wine all the time.
Truth: Viennese pastry is the best thing in France! And so is wine. I love white wine and "rosé". You have to taste it at all costs! It's also necessary to know that everyone is not a fan of wine. We don’t always drink wine haha. On the other hand, our grandparents always have a bottle of wine at the table for lunch or dinner!
Personally I drink it when I'm with friends or on the terrace in summer!

Let's go!✨

Myth: In Italy they eat only pasta and pizza
Truth: Pasta and Pizza are definitely the most famous Italian dishes. Foreigners usually don't really understand why there are so many types of pasta, since they're all made from the same ingredients, and why we eat so much of it. Well as you know, different types of pasta have different textures and some types fit better with some sauces than others. Eating "lasagne al pesto" is ofc completely different from "spaghetti alla carbonara" and therefore we treat them as different dishes.

Myth: In Italy, everything is run by the mafia.
Truth: Thanks to movies like "the Godfather", Italians have become (in)famous not only for their culinary traditions. Movies don't always depict reality but yeah, speaking for the Southern part of Italy, the stereotype kinda holds true. Unfortunately, even though the South is very rich with beautiful landscapes and warm people, the mafia historically has been very influential. The police and government definitely know where the problems are, but I wonder what stops them from solving them. So, eventually, you kinda get the point, which is not really true for the northern part of Italy, fortunately.

Myth: They don't like to work; aperitivo is one of the confirmations.
Truth: The landscape and the weather here are beautiful, my friend. Why are you in such a hurry? Let's relax by the sea and sip from our cocktails watching the sunset, you'll learn to enjoy life when you'll stop worrying.

Myth: Matriarchy
Truth: Family bonds are very important and parents want to help their children as long as they can, even if the children become adults. Italians like company, we are very social and idk, mothers want to take care of their children, like any mother, and the children don't want to disappoint their "mamma"s.

Hey there!
We decided to talk with a foreigner, but non-native English speaker, to show you the real practical value of knowing different languages!✨😊

Today we are talking with our good friend — Clara Hernandez. Yeah, her family name sounds more like Spanish, but she is originally from France. This girl is gorgeous as a person, she knows more than 2 languages, likes to travel and eat cheese. Let's ask her some questions! 🤗

Question: Hey! Introduce yourself, please! What's your name? Where are you from? Answer: Hi! I'm Clara, I'm 22 y.o. and I live in France, in Lyon.

Q: When and how did you start to learn English?
A: I started learning English when I was 6 years old at school. We all did. I mean it's a very common practice to start learning languages in Primary School but the most important thing — never stop learning.

Q: How often do you practice your English?
A: Every day. I'm a student so most of my classes are in English now. I find it pretty useful since it's kind of hard to communicate in English with family and French friends. We usually speak only French. But I need to tell you, my biggest practice was during my exchange semester in Norway in 2018.

Q: Did English help you in your life? How?
A: Yes. Well, firstly, as I have already mentioned, I have English classes. I simply couldn't study without knowing English. Secondly, English is one of the main requirements for getting a good job in an international company. I have a job now and English helped me a lot to get it.

Q: Do you know other languages? If yes, tell us how did you learn them.
A: I know a little bit of Italian that I learned at school. I practice it with the Italian part of my family.

Q: What motivates you to learn the language(s)?
A: I adore traveling. I want to meet new people and be able to communicate with them! Even if we're not allowed to travel now, I can still improve my English for future trips!

Q: What can you suggest to people who have just started learning a foreign language?
A: I can advise people to practice more. Contact with foreign people and speak with them the language you're learning. It is gonna be hard, maybe sometimes confusing, but It is important not to give up even if it seems difficult at first.

That's it for today! 🥰
Thanks to our amazing French lady — Clara Hernandez! You can check her Instagram, just click here!

Hey, loves! How are you doing?

And last, but not least — разнообразие стран Европы и возможность свободно путешествовать по ним, получив визу только в одну.

Let's go!✨

- DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst)
- Deutschlandstipendium
- Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung
- Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung
- Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung

- EDHEC scholarship

Listening🎧

Writing📝

Reading📖

Speaking 📢
