For the past four years, fans have been eagerly awaiting the follow-up to Deftones’ excellent eighth album Gore. And, at long last, the brilliantly titled Ohms is finally on the horizon. Reprise Records Genres: Shoegazing, Alternative metal. The last time Deftones worked with producer Terry Date – the man who helmed the desk for the Sacramento band’s classic first four albums – was in 2008. That record was called ‘Eros’. You’ve never heard it. Work was aborted on the record in November that year, following a car accident that left bassist Chi Cheng in a coma – one from which he never woke. He died of cardiac arrest in April 2013, aged 42.

It’s likely that entering Date’s studio once more was both painful and cathartic for the Deftones surviving members. While it’s not explicit at all – lyricist Chino Moreno has rarely signposted what on earth it is he’s singing about – you can feel both pain and catharsis all through Deftones’ ninth studio album. It’s heavy stuff, both sonically and in emotional clout. There’s something many forget about heavy music. Sabbath, Metallica, Slayer and beyond; it’s all heavy fucking metal. But sometimes emotions – we’re thinking New York synth punk pioneers Suicide or the tinnitus-inducing My Bloody Valentine – can be heavier than any barre chord.

Google characterizes the title of Deftones' ninth excursion as "an electrical opposition between two purposes of a conduit". OK, we kinda realized that as of now, yet what does that word intend to frontman Chino Moreno? "It's that parity and extremity of things," he tells Kerrang!. "I've generally portrayed our band as having that yin and yang. As individuals, the music we make, and the verses that I compose, there's consistently this juxtaposition and that is the magnificence of what we've made."

THE BAND JOINED FORCES WITH A LEGENDARY PRODUCER It was only in February this year that the world learned the ridiculously exciting news that Deftones had recruited the mighty Terry Date to produce Ohms. Previously, the studio whizz joined forces with the band on their first four albums – 1995’s Adrenaline, 1997’s Around The Fur, 2000’s White Pony and 2003’s self-titled – as well as producing albums and songs by the likes of Slipknot, Bring Me The Horizon, Limp Bizkit and Slayer throughout his inimitable career.

The guys worked together at LA’s Henson and Seattle’s Trainwreck Studios this time around, with drummer Abe Cunningham revealing to Kerrang! that “coffee, juice, good beer, laughter, a little piss’n’vinegar, but a lot less tequila” were involved in the process. Sounds like a delicious recipe to us.

Deftones 2020” would be quite the fitting campaign slogan this year. Faced with frightening realities, unexpected downs, and challenging changes, Deftones have swooped in to provide a sonic escape and maybe even a ray of hope in a time that has been plagued by a series of unfortunate events.

Though President Chino Moreno may seem like a stretch (for now), Deftones have spun these unforeseen circumstances and unprecedented experiences into something fans can hold onto during this period of struggle: the highly-anticipated LP, Ohms, due out September 25th (Warner Records). 2020 is also a hallmark year in the Sacramento-born band’s career, as they celebrate 25 years since dropping their searing debut Adrenaline, 20 years since releasing their incomparable album White Pony, 10 years since unveiling their emotive and piercing record Diamond Eyes, and one presidential term since gracing fans with their eighth studio album Gore. Now, vocalist Chino Moreno, guitarist Stephen Carpenter, drummer Abe Cunningham, progr
