The Anti-Lebanon Mountains of the Al-Qalamoun region, specifically just south of the town of Assal al-Ward (عسال الورد).

The orchard plantations visible in the satellite imagery are almost certainly fruit trees, with cherry and apple trees being the primary crops grown in this high-altitude, fertile pocket of Syria. The region is famous across the country for its cool climate and high elevation, making it ideal for temperate stone fruits and pome fruits. Apricot, pear, and almond trees are also commonly interspersed in these types of terraced mountain plots.

The long, dense green strip on the right side of the image has a distinctly different signature than the orchard grids or the dry, plowed earth nearby. Because it lacks the grid structure of trees and shows a uniform, carpet-like density, this "grass" looking area is a field crop.

Given the agricultural context of the high-altitude Al-Qalamoun region, this plot is highly likely to be a field of cereal grains or forage crops.

During the spring and early summer months, fields of winter wheat or barley turn a vibrant, deep green before maturing into gold for the summer harvest. Another strong possibility for this type of dense, lush ground cover in Syrian mountain farming is alfalfa or similar clover-like forage crops, which are heavily cultivated in these valleys to feed local livestock.

Those striking, swirly patterns wrapping around the hillsides are agricultural terraces carved directly into the slopes.

In rugged, mountainous areas like the Al-Qalamoun region, farmers build these step-like terraces following the natural contours of the topography. It prevents fragile topsoil from eroding down the steep mountainside during heavy rains, and it traps scarce rainwater so it sinks into the ground rather than rushing down the slope as runoff.

That brown expanse to the right of the terraces isn't actually a natural desert, though the dry climate makes it look like one from above. It is simply uncultivated or fallow agricultural land that is waiting for the next planting cycle. Because the region relies heavily on seasonal rain and crop rotation, farmers will leave entire hillsides bare for a season to let the soil rest and accumulate moisture.

These are hardened military bunkers located inside a strategic storage facility in Syria. The coordinates you provided place this area roughly 50 kilometers northeast of Damascus, near the town of An-Nasiriyah.

The linear, staggered arrangements shown in the satellite image are classic earth-bermed military storage structures. These are heavily reinforced concrete bunkers buried under mounds of dirt to insulate them against aerial bombardments, contain accidental secondary explosions from propagating to adjacent bunkers, and conceal them from plain sight.

The broader An-Nasiriyah military complex serves as a major depot for the Syrian Armed Forces and has historically been associated with Scud missile storage, conventional munitions depots, and various specialized military research installations.
The institutional framework of the Syrian Armed Forces was not completely erased; rather, it has been rapidly reorganized under his leadership. Because this site near An-Nasiriyah is a major conventional military depot in western Syria, it transitioned from the control of Assad's forces directly to the control of al-Sharaa's new government army.

A seasonal stream bed or drainage depression, often referred to as a wadi in arid and semi-arid regions. These areas naturally collect runoff water during periods of rainfall, making the soil significantly more moist than the surrounding terrain. As a result, wild vegetation, dense grasses, and shrubs thrive along the water's natural path, standing out sharply against the dry, lighter-colored earth.

Technically, you can plant trees there, but it is highly impractical and risky for a commercial orchard. The primary issue is flash flooding. In arid regions like western Syria, a wadi can transform from a dry ditch into a raging torrent of water in a matter of minutes during winter storms. This heavy runoff would easily erode the soil, damage irrigation setups, and wash away young trees entirely. Furthermore, water tends to pool in the lowest points of a drainage depression. This creates stagnant, waterlogged soil conditions where tree roots cannot breathe, eventually leading to root rot and killing the plants.

The local farmers have intentionally avoided the wadi for these reasons. As you can see in the image, they deliberately ended their neat rows of orchards right at the edge of the slope where the terrain dips. They leave the bottom of the channel to wild, resilient shrubs and grasses that can survive both the intense seasonal floods and the dry spells in between.

The lines cutting across the landscape in the second image are earthen agricultural terraces and retaining berms, punctuated by low rock walls and dirt access tracks.
The long, winding lines that mimic the shape of the hills are agricultural terraces.

Farmers build these low ridges along the natural contours of the slope to slow down rainwater as it flows downhill. This prevents the water from sweeping away valuable topsoil and forces it to sink into the ground, directly irrigating the roots of the olive or fruit trees.

Some of the straighter, more rigid lines separating different plots of land are a mix of property boundaries and piled rocks. Over generations, farmers clearing the limestone-heavy Syrian soil for planting gather the rocks and stack them along the edges of their fields. This creates low, functional drystone walls that help define fields and control wind erosion.

These trees are most likely almond trees (Prunus dulcis) or, alternatively, cherry trees (Prunus avium).

The Qalamoun mountain range and the surrounding highlands northeast of Damascus are famous for their vast stone-fruit orchards.

A stone fruit (botanically called a drupe) is simply a category of fruit where a soft, fleshy outer part surrounds a single, large, hard shell or "stone" that contains the actual seed inside. Almonds, cherries, peaches, plums, and apricots are all part of this closely related family of plants (the Prunus genus). The high-altitude plains and rocky slopes of western Syria have an ideal climate for growing these specific types of fruits. The trees require a distinct winter chilling period to break their dormancy and trigger fruit production, followed by hot, dry summers that ripen the fruit without causing fungal diseases.

During autumn, stone-fruit trees enter a state of dormancy—essentially a deep winter sleep—to protect their delicate embryonic flowers and leaves from freezing temperatures. To prevent the tree from accidentally waking up and blooming during a brief winter warmup, the tree relies on an internal biochemical clock that measures chilling hours.

The tree tracks exposure to cold temperatures, typically between 0°C and 7°C. Inside the buds, a growth-inhibiting hormone called abscisic acid slowly breaks down under steady cold conditions, while growth-promoting hormones like gibberellins gradually accumulate.

If a tree does not experience enough cold weather to complete this chemical transition, the internal clock never resets. When spring arrives, the buds will either remain completely dormant, open unevenly, or produce weak, deformed blossoms that drop off before ever setting fruit.

If trees only reacted to a sudden warm day, a brief warm spell in January would trick them into blooming, and the next freeze in February would kill all their delicate new growth. To survive, the tree needs an foolproof way to guarantee that winter is truly, completely over before it risks waking up. It does this by using a biochemical lock that can only be unlocked by a massive accumulated dose of cold, rather than just a temporary drop in temperature.

Every hour the temperature spends between 0°C and 7°C acts like a single drop of acid wearing away at that molecular lock. If the winter is too mild or too short, the tree doesn't receive enough total hours of cold to completely silence those sleep genes. The lock remains partially clamped.

When spring arrives and the weather warms up, the tree receives conflicting internal signals. The warm weather tells the roots to pump water and nutrients upward, but the buds are still chemically locked in a state of deep sleep. This causes severe physiological chaos.

Evolutionarily speaking, counting a massive chunk of cold hours is the most foolproof, reliable signal these trees have to verify that winter is actually behind them.

In nature, warm days happen randomly all the time—a weirdly sunny week in January, or a hot desert wind in February. But a massive streak of hundreds of freezing hours never happens randomly in the middle of summer or autumn. It only happens during a true, sustained winter. By anchoring its awakening to this massive accumulation of cold, the tree guarantees that when it finally hits the "on" switch, it is safely in the true spring window. It is the plant world's ultimate defense against getting tricked by a fake spring.

Once the cold requirement is met and spring temperatures rise, the buds break open, bloom, and get pollinated. This kicks off the ripening phase, which is entirely driven by heat and sunlight. Heat acts as the primary catalyst for the complex biochemical processes required to transform a bitter, hard, green seed-pod into a sweet, mature fruit.

Heat stimulates enzymes like pectinase to break down pectin, the rigid structural substance in plant cell walls. This softens the hard flesh of the fruit so that animals can easily consume it and subsequently disperse the hard stone seed. Heat drives metabolic pathways that neutralize sour organic acids (like malic acid) within the fruit. Simultaneously, it triggers the synthesis of volatile compounds, giving stone fruits their distinctive sweet scent.

Defensive Revetments / Hull-Down Positions: The parallel, linear cutouts dug into the slope are engineered berms designed to conceal heavy machinery, armored personnel carriers (APCs), or tanks. By backing or driving into these slots, a vehicle achieves a "hull-down" posture, exposing only its turret or weapon system to the opposite ridge while protecting its chassis from direct enemy fire.

A Hesco bastion is a modern, modular gabion system primarily used for military fortification, flood control, and emergency perimeter security. Invented in the late 1980s by Jimi Heselden, a former British coal miner, it revolutionized defensive engineering by replacing the slow, labor-intensive process of filling individual sandbags.

A standard Hesco unit consists of a collapsible wire mesh container made from heavy-duty galvanized steel. The interior of the mesh is lined with a thick, non-woven polypropylene geotextile fabric.

The units are shipped flat-packed on pallets, pulling open like an accordion. Once expanded, heavy machinery like a front-end loader or excavator fills the cells with whatever local material is available, such as sand, gravel, dirt, or crushed rock. A single Hesco barrier can be erected and filled in a fraction of the time it would take to build a wall of equivalent volume out of traditional sandbags.

When an explosive charge or mortar rounds hit a Hesco barrier, the immense mass of the compacted earth inside absorbs and dissipates the energy of the blast. The flexible steel mesh and geotextile fabric prevent the wall from shattering or turning into secondary shrapnel.

The thick layer of earth easily stops high-caliber small arms fire, heavy machine gun rounds, and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).

Because the units can be pinned together using steel joining pins and stacked on top of one another, they can be used to construct massive, multi-tiered walls, perimeter checkpoints, aircraft revetments, and reinforced bunkers.

Jimi Heselden, a former British coal miner from Leeds, lost his job during the UK miners' strikes in the 1980s. Using his redundancy payout, he designed a modular wire-and-fabric gabion basket originally intended to act as a quick, strong sea wall to prevent coastal erosion on his property.

While originally designed for flood and civil engineering projects, the British Army quickly realized that these heavy-duty, earth-filled baskets were incredibly effective at stopping bullets and absorbing bomb blasts.

During the Gulf War in the early 1990s, the military began buying them in massive quantities.
