You have of course seen your dog eating grass. Talking from experience here, my dog Silk has done it countless times in the last three-and-a-half years. Being a Labrador mix there’s not much she hasn’t attempted to eat yet….

Grass eating is often followed by vomiting and sends panic down the dog owners minds. But not every dog who eats grass will throw up. Statistics show that only 27% dogs vomit after grazing on their walks.

So in this section we will talk about different reasons why your dog might be eating grass.

Lack of fiber: Lack of fiber is a problem in humans as well as dogs. We usually resort to the infamous legumes while dogs resort to grass. This is completely normal and should not be a cause for concern. If your dog eats grass frequently and doesn’t show any other signs of concern like loss of appetite then it’s probably the lack of fiber. You might be feeding her the best quality dog food, but sadly my suggestion would be: it’s time for a change or you can add some carrots and pumpkin to her regular kibble. Always remember to cut in bite size pieces!

To induce vomiting: Sometimes your dog might eat something she is not supposed to or feel bloated or gassy because of it. From my personal experience I have seen, Silk will eat grass when her stomach hurts. She will beg me to take her for a walk and then graze on whatever leaves she feels like having. By the time we are back home, she leaves me a wonderful surprise. In the form of vomit, of course! Again if this happens once in a while it is not a cause of concern. Sometimes when I can hear her stomach growl, I give her a drop of Ondem syrup which seems to calm it in an hour or so. Again this comes from my personal experience, but it works for Silk, should work for you as well. But if your dog vomits more frequently or keeps repeating the habit for more than 2 days, my take would be its time for a ride to the vet.

Note: At times, worms in your dog’s tummy may also encourage him to eat grass. But if you regularly deworm your dog this shouldn’t be a cause of concern.

Boredom: Some dogs just do it because they are bored. While it may be heard to hear for any dog parent, it should be taken seriously. If your dog eats grass very frequently (like on every walk) then its time to provide some kind of alternative simulation like keeping a few treats in your pocket or spice the walk a little with some fetch.

Enjoyment

Some dogs just like it! If you have a yard in your house and a Labrador as a pet, it may be likely that your dog has taken a liking to the grass due to frequent access to it. I have a small yard in my house and if let loose, Silk will eat whatever I plant in it. (I cannot grow plants even when I would like to!) This is no reason to panic, you just have to accept every dog is unique and make sure the grass she has access to is free of pesticides to avoid any future problems.

5 Ways Dogs Show Love
If you’re reading this, chances are your dog is the most amazing thing in your life. You know that they love you unconditionally and would do anything for a belly rub or a treat.
5 ways to tell your dog you love them
5 Ways Dogs Show Love
If you’re reading this, chances are your dog is the most amazing thing in your life. You know that they love you unconditionally and would do anything for a belly rub or a treat. But how can you tell them that, even if they don’t understand English? Here are 5 ways to let them know just how much they mean to you:

Eye Contact

Dogs are masters of communication and they use their eyes to relay messages. If your dog looks at you with “that look,” then it’s time for a chat, so be sure to give them all the attention they deserve! Add in some sweet talking into this conversation and soon enough, your pup will have hearts melting from love!

Pets

The simple act of physical touch can flood your dog with oxytocin, the feel-good hormone. Take the time to give them a gentle massage, scratch their belly or rub their ears for that sweet spot any canine would love and you’ll guarantee yourself an approving smile from the doggy after they receive all that love flowing through. While some dogs might enjoy cuddling others may not so it’s best to read up on what kind of body language your pup is giving off before proceeding!

Bow- wow

Your dog will often bark to tell you about their day and maybe give you an opinion too. Research has shown that dogs raise their eyebrows when listening, so try raising yours next time they talk to see how it goes! When you show them your ear is always open for what they have to say, there’s a good chance the tail starts wagging along with eye contact and the cutest ever head twist!

Training Sessions

Dogs are not only playful creatures, but they thrive on the structure of learning new tricks and behavior. They love to cooperate with their owners by being taught good manners that will make everyone happy from your pup all the way up to you! By feeding them during training sessions or giving them a toy as an incentive for behaving well, it can be rewarding both ways- teach your dog some responsibility while strengthening his bond with you in return.

#Furry_Friends

Give your dog the chance to build their confidence by being around other dogs and humans! Drop them off for a day full of new smells, playing, learning with fellow fur buddies. You are also providing your pup an opportunity to learn positive behavior while reinforcing what they know at home so that when you bring them back there is nothing but love left in their heart.

We would love to know how you show affection to your dog. And we would love for our community of furry friends all over India to know too, do share with us on our Instagram handle and we will ensure it reaches other furry family members!
A question which is asked by kings, bureaucrats and commoners alike. But the answer to this question is always a human. The human species is the dominant species on our planet. We define what cultural exchanges look like, what is right and what is not and basically everything which is considered important and everything that’s not.

But the question I pose today is this- What if Dogs ruled the world?

Would the world be better off? No doubt on that

But what would the world look like? Let’s explore that a bit.

No more handshakes or Namaste

Dogs only greet with nose bumps, butt smells and an occasional lick if you like that. No funny smells allowed. Bye bye hi-fis and handshakes

There would be a genocide against cats

Dogs do not like cats. Cats are the reason for all their problems. No more feline overlords. This planet will be free!

All currencies would be backed by bones rather than gold or silver

We would be stupid to question this logic, would we?

Humans would be made slaves to fulfill their master dog’s wishes

Dog commands thee to take me for walks 4 times a day..no 5…no 6..no 10..yes 10 is the right number. Or maybe one or two more.

No table manners

Doggo gulps down food in one go! What other choice does he have?

Fetch would be a national sport

Arenas would be filled up to watch dogs bring back stick from one corner to another. Plot twist. Doggo is not going to bring it.

Everytime would be Nap time!

Unless there’s a packet of chips opening nearby, then the dog king is going to stalk whoever’s eating that!

Better movies

Forget Star wars, Avengers and Bahubali, our dog overlords will be more into movies like Jurassic Bark, Jab tak hai Bone, Kabhi Bone Kabhi treats

Happier headlines

Grim news headlines would be replaced by funny ones. “Dog ki adalat and “Into the Barkness” and “Aao treats badle”

No stray dogs

Dogs of all animals are extremely loving. They will make sure that neither a dog or a human for that matter, sleeps on the street ever!

Dog IQ Test

Your dog may never win the Nobel prize or never clear the IIT exams, she may even lose her favourite ball once in a while- but when it comes to making us happy most of our pets are downright brilliant(Dog IQ Test). But that doesn’t mean all dogs are the same.

When we got Silk, she turned out to be a fast learner, especially with some positive reinforcement, she easily learned to sit, stay and fetch even without blinking an eye. She could have anything for a treat. But when I saw my friend’s dog, Tuktuk, unlike Silk, she had no interest in playing fetch or was never as excited for treats as Silk was, but she was such a great dog. Extremely obedient and protective, it turned out that her skill sets were different, like really really different. This got me thinking about different personalities of dogs. Around this time I had also started feeding stray dogs and the difference in their personalities were pretty evident.

I kept googling it and asking other pet owners and it turned out that it really was a thing. Every dog was different.

So want to find out how smart your dog really is? Well I have prepared this DIY IQ test for dogs(Dog IQ Test), which can be a good starting point. Feel free to modify the test as per your dog as I rightly said, every dog is different. The fun part is you are both going to love it no matter what and the tests are so easy that even your children can take up the task. And maybe one day, who knows, your dog might just crack that JEE Mains!

THE DOG IQ TEST:

1.Towel test

Take a large towel or blanket and gently place it over your dog’s head.

If he frees himself from the towel in less than 15 seconds, give him 3 points. If it takes 15-30 seconds, 2 points. Longer than 30 seconds earns 1 point.

Bucket test

Place a dog treat or a favorite toy under one of three buckets placed next to each other. Let the dog know which bucket the treat is under, then turn the dog away for a few seconds. Then, let her find the treat. If she immediately goes to the correct bucket give her 3 points. If she takes two attempts, score 2 points. If your dog looks under the other two buckets first, score 1 point.

Favorite spot:

With your dog out of the room, rearrange the furniture. When he re-enters the room, if he goes directly to his favorite spot, give him 3 points. If it takes him 30 seconds to investigate before he finds his spot, give him 2 points. If he decides on a new area completely, score 1 point.

Chair puzzle

Place a treat under a table or chair low enough so your dog can only fit her paw and cannot fit her head. If your dog figures how to reach the treat within one minute, score 3 points. If she uses her paws and nose, score 2 points. If your dog gives up, score 1 point.

Go for a walk!

On a day or time you normally don’t walk your dog, quietly pick up your keys, and his leash while he’s watching you. If he gets excited immediately, score 3 points. If you have to walk to the door before he knows it’s time to go out, score 2 points. If he sits and just looks confused give him 1 point. This might be a little harder during the lockdown so just give your dog the well deserved 3 points!

Barrier test

Construct a barrier from cardboard that is 5 feet wide and taller than your dog when she’s on two legs, so she can’t see over it. Attach two boxes to either side as support structures. In the center of the cardboard, cut a 3 inch-wide rectangular aperture – it should run from about 4 inches from the top to about 4 inches from the bottom. (This way, the dog can see through the barrier but cannot physically get through.) Toss a toy or treat to the other side of the barrier, or have someone stand on the other side. If your dog walks around the barrier within 30 seconds, give her 3 points. If she goes around the barrier between 30 seconds and one minute, give 2 points. If she gets her head stuck in the aperture trying to get through, give her 1 point for effort!

Scoring and results

16 points or higher – Brilliant!

13 to 16 points – Well above average

9 to 12 points – Average

5 to 8 points – Below average

1 to 4 points – Not the brightest kibble in the bag, but we still love ’em!

It is vital that you teach your puppy where to eliminate, what to chew and how to have a happy time when you are not around. Remember, puppy schooling starts from day one and never ends.

House training

The day you bring your pup, you should also get a puppy crate. If you cannot get a puppy crate, you must confine your pup to at least one specific area of the house and be consistent with it. The same area must be used until the puppy learns the house rules. And please do not stray from puppy confinement. I learnt it the hard way but I want you to not repeat my mistakes. The quicker you housetrain your puppy, the sooner she gets to enjoy roaming around the house.

What should your doggy den have?

A place for your pup to rest and sleep

A stuffed chew toy to play with when you are not around

A pee pad or something similar for your pup to eliminate

Potty training

New pup parents always find it difficult to teach their pups to eliminate. But trust me, it is very easy. Very very easy. Just follow this three steps:

When you mop the floor, add 2 caps of unseasoned vinegar with your phenyl solution.

Mop the house with the solution but keep one area free of it– could be your garden, the balcony or the bathroom or similar, you know your house better.

Pick up your puppy every 1-2 hours and put him in the potty area.

Wait for him to pee or poop.

When he does relieve himself, reward him with mad excitement and lot of puppy treats!

Puppy Game: Tug-of-war | Drop it or Leave it

Puppy games are fun ways to tire out your newly adopted fur baby while building the skills they’ll need to become socialized, obedient, friendly adult dogs in the future. While puppies spend a good portion of their days sleeping, they can have lots of energy when they wake up, and puppy games can put that energy to good use.

Tug-of-war is something dogs play naturally and it is an awesome game to play with your pup.

Make sure you use a toy that is only for playing tug-of-war. Do not use socks or other objects that might confuse your dog about what they can play with. If your dog tries to pick up something that’s not a toy, the game should end immediately so they learn that this isn’t acceptable.

This is also a great way to start teaching your puppy the command, “Drop it,” or, “Leave it.” Wait for them to drop the toy on their own. This may take a while, but be patient. Once they do, reward them with a treat.

Once they start to get the idea that dropping the toy earns them a treat, start associating the command with the behavior. Your puppy will probably not learn this perfectly in one sitting, and it may take some time, but it’s a mental and physical exercise that will burn off puppy energy.

Just don’t let these sessions go on too long or your puppy will get bored and start to lose what they’ve learned.

Dogs use a series of barks, whines, and growls that often have different meanings than we give them. However it’s not always clear what they are trying to say when in the dog-to-dog communication process(dog body language) or if there is another hidden meaning behind their actions like jumping up for attention (usually means excited) or licking someone’s face (can mean affectionate).
Decoding Doggy Language

Dogs rely on nonverbal body language to communicate their emotions and intentions, which can lead to some unfortunate misunderstandings with humans. So this week we will decode some of the common doggy signals!

TAIL WAGGING

Tail wagging is a sign of happiness right? Wrong! I mean not always.

Tail wagging is a difficult signal to interpret. All that can be inferred from it is emotional arousal, not happiness or displeasure with the situation at hand. A dog’s speed and direction of tail wag are more important in determining its emotions than whether their tail is going up or down as this could mean any number of things: frustration, disappointment, excitement; you name it!

When dogs are excited, they tend to wag their tails more rapidly. If the tail is a slow sweep with little movement from left to right it usually means that your dog is relaxed and happy. When you see fast twitch-like movements in either direction your pup may be feeling both anxious or angry!

The wag of a dog’s tail has been found to be an indicator for the mood and emotions they are feeling. A study showed that when dogs feel happy, their tails will usually start moving faster rightward in excitement while negative feelings or stress manifest as left-handed whirls around to show displeasure.

If you get to know your dog’s neutral tail position, you will more quickly recognize when their emotions have shifted.

Raised Hackles

While many people think that a dog’s hackles are raised when they’re angry, this is not always the case. A more accurate definition of “hackle” is simply another word for “hair” or “fur.” In fact, dogs can have their fur stand on end in response to various emotions such as excitement and fear.

Posture

The posture of a dog can tell you everything about their mood and what they are trying to say. For instance, when a cowering dog is hunched towards the ground that often shows fear or stress from something nearby. The more extreme version of this position may be rolling onto one’s back exposing one’s belly which in turn says “I mean no harm.”

The opposite of this posture is a dog with his weight forward. This simply indicates that the dog is really interested in something. But it might also mean malicious intent: chewing, barking at other dogs on the street and so on!

The easiest to ready gesture is the play bow, where the dog bows his head. This indicates that the dog wants to initiate play with other dogs and even humans.

Another common signal is a paw raise, while in the wild it usually means pointing at a prey, at your home it might mean your dog feels a little insecure and is looking at you for guidance(dog body language).

Facial expressions

Dogs have a common face shape as humans (eyes, nose, lips, etc), but they don’t behave the same. Consider yawning; people do it when tired or bored while dogs usually yawn when they are stressed out. As per Turid Rugaas, author of On Talking Terms with Dogs, says that dogs yawn to calm themselves or even their owners. As an experiment, yawn for you dog on your next vet visit and see if he yawns back!
