What are the certification standards accepted by our traffic law?

In our country, according to the current standard (Dec.231 / 2000 MTT), the only recognized and accepted certifications are the following international standards:

• Standard Nº218, Motorcycle Helmets, established by the United States Code of Federal Regulations. It is usually known by the DOT inscription. It is a set of standards set by the manufacturer who is self-certified based on "honor", this is possible in countries like the USA, where there are strict laws for non-compliance with these standards. DOT are the minimum safety requirements that any motorcycle helmet must meet.

• JIS T 8133, which is the one in force in Japan. The least known in our country, this standard is based on the Industrial Standardization Law, which is a set of standards established by the Japanese government and regulates all areas of industrial standardization.

• EN / 22/04 and subsequent modifications, of the European Community of Nations. Now superseded by ECE / 22.05. It is the most widely used motorcycle helmet certification internationally, required by more than 50 countries around the world. It is stricter than DOT and not all DOT certified helmets will meet ECE 22.05 standards. This is due to differences in certification standards. In this case, a specific sample of the helmet to be marketed is certified.

It should be noted that nationally manufactured helmets must comply with any of the aforementioned certifications and accredit it through a certificate granted by the National Accreditation System of the National Institute of Standardization.

There is a certification that is not recognized in our law is the SNELL. SNELL is a non-profit institution that has its own laboratory and certifies helmets under ISO 17025, Snell is a voluntary certification by manufacturers and is one of the strictest, so much so that it does not certify flip-up helmets. This is why we can find DOT helmets with SNELL or ECE 22.05 and SNELL certification.
