These are behaviors that we&#x27;ve learned and that occur almost automatically. And most of us have a habit we&#x27;d like to break or one we&#x27;d like to develop. </p>
  <p>For most people, it takes about four weeks for a new behavior to become routine or habit. The following steps can make it easier to establish a new behavior pattern. </p>
  <h2>The first step is to set your goal. </h2>
  <p>Especially when you are trying to stop or break a habit, you should try to phrase your goal as a positive statement. </p>
  <p>For example, instead of saying &quot;I will quit snacking at night&quot;, say &quot;I will practice healthy eating habits&quot;. You should also write down your goal. Commit it to paper helps you to commit. It can also help if you tell your goal to someone you trust. </p>
  <h2>Decide on a replacement behavior. </h2>
  <p>(If your goal is to develop a new habit then your replacement behavior will be the goal itself.) This step is very important when you are trying to break a habit. If you want to stop a behavior, you must have a superior behavior to put in it&#x27;s place. If you don&#x27;t, the old behavior pattern will return.</p>
  <h2>Learn and be aware of your triggers. </h2>
  <p>Behavior patterns don&#x27;t exist independently. Often, one habit is associated with another part of your regular routine. For instance, in the snacking example, the trigger may be late-night television or reading. </p>
  <p>You automatically grab a bag of chips while you watch. Many people who smoke automatically light up after eating. Think about when and why you do the thing you want to quit. </p>
  <h2>Post reminders to yourself. </h2>
  <p>You can do this by leaving yourself notes in the places where the behavior usually occurs. </p>
  <p>Or you can leave yourself a message on the mirror, refrigerator, computer monitor, or some other place where you will see it regularly. You can also have a family member or co-worker use a particular phrase to remind you of your goal. </p>
  <h2>Get help and support from someone. </h2>
  <p>This is kind of obvious. Any job is easier with help. It works even better if you can form a partnership with someone who shares the same goal. </p>
  <h2>Write daily affirmations. </h2>
  <p>Write your phrase or sentence in the present tense (as if it were already happening), and write it ten times a day for twenty-one days.   <p>You&#x27;ve identified the benefits you offer your customers, but how do you turn a list of benefits into engaging web copy which converts visitors into customers?</p>
  <p>Recently I wrote an article explaining how to identify the benefits you offer your customers <a href="https://bit.ly/2Tub6mA" target="_blank">https://fidanza-eu.tumblr.com/</a>. That article challenged business owners and marketing managers to think in terms of benefits rather than features when writing their web copy. </p>
  <p>What the article didn’t discuss was how to actually write the web copy once they had identified their benefits. That’s what this article is about. (It even gives you a couple of templates you can use to make your job a whole lot easier!)</p>
  <p>As a website copywriter, many of the projects I undertake are completely new websites. The client has some general ideas about what they’d like to convey, but they need someone who can fine-tune their message, and create web copy (and a web structure) that engages their readers. </p>
  <p>As a result, over the years I’ve developed a process for doing this effectively. There are four main steps:</p>
  <ul>
    <li>Identify benefits</li>
    <li>Identify how you deliver these benefits</li>
    <li>Prioritise your benefits</li>
    <li>Write the content</li>
  </ul>
  <p>Although this article touches on step 1, it’s mostly about steps 2, 3, and 4.</p>
  <h2>Step 1 – Identify your Benefits</h2>
  <p>Branding aside, most websites are about selling. Customers don’t want to know what you can do; they want to know what you can do for THEM. That means the first question you should ask is, “What benefits do I offer my customers?” This is usually the first step toward identifying the key message to be conveyed. </p>
  <p>That’s not to say that your website shouldn’t describe your products and services. You just need to make sure it describes them in terms of benefits to your customer.</p>

  <h2>Step 2 – Identify How You Delivers This Benefits</h2>
  <p>Of course, you can’t just claim to deliver benefits and stop at that. You need to support that claim. On your website, you’re going to need to convince your audience that you actually do deliver these benefits. Anyone can say they deliver benefits, but few can say it persuasively.</p>
  <p>From step 1 you’ll have a list of benefits. Now you need to think about how you deliver each benefit in that list. This is where you start talking about features – price, product highlights, distribution channel, competitor weaknesses, external factors, USPs, etc.</p>
  <p>It’s helpful if you draw up a table with one column for benefits and one for the features which deliver those benefits. </p>
  <p>You’ll probably find this process much easier than identifying benefits. In fact, you’ve probably got most of this information written down already somewhere. If not, chances have you uncovered a good portion of it when you were brainstorming for benefits.</p>
  <p>TIP: If you’re having trouble identifying supporting features, before filling out the table, try listing everything you can think of which relates to what you do and how you do it. Don’t worry about the order. </p>
  <p>Just brain dump onto a piece of paper, a whiteboard, a Word document, anywhere… Don’t leave anything out, even if it seems unimportant. </p>
  <p>(You’d be surprised how important even the most insignificant details can become once you start assigning them to benefits.) If you start getting lost, think back to the question you’re trying to answer.</p>
  <p>How do you deliver your list of benefits to your customer? Once you’ve done your brain dump, read through it and decide which specific benefit each feature delivers. </p>
  <h2>Step 3 – Prioritise Your Benefits</h2>
  <p>Now that you’ve identified all the things you COULD say, it’s time to figure out what you SHOULD say and where you should say it. This is where your benefits-features table comes into play. Read through your list of benefits and prioritise them according to how compelling they will be to your reader.</p>
  <p>The reason for this? Priority determines prominence. The most compelling benefits will need to be prominent on your site. </p>
  <p>TIP: Be aware that your list may include some benefits which everyone in your business category could claim. In other words, they’re not just specific to your company, but apply to the type of service you offer.</p>
  <p>For example, if you sell a Content Management System (CMS) for website creation, you may list “Greater control for marketing managers” and “Less expense updating content” as benefits. </p>
  <p>Every CMS vendor could claim these benefits, so you’ll need to question their importance. Will they differentiate you from your competitors. Generic benefits can be useful if none of your competitors are using them, or if you feel you need to educate your market a bit before launching into company-specific benefits.</p>
  <h2>Step 4 – Write Your Content</h2>
  <p>So now you know what you’d like to say, it’s time to decide how to say it. This is about three things: </p>
  <ul>
    <li>Subject – What is the subject of your site; features or benefits?</li>
    <li>Structure – How do you structure your site such that your customers will read your most compelling benefits?</li>
    <li>Words – What words should you use to best engage your audience (and the search engines)?</li>
  </ul>
  <h2>Subject</h2>
  <p>What is the subject of your site; features or benefits? The answer to this question lies in audience identification. If your audience knows a bit about the type of product or service you’re selling, lead with features (e.g. processor speed, turnaround time, uptime, expertise, educational qualifications, wide product range, etc.). </p>
  <p>But make sure you talk about their benefits and make sure the features offering the most important benefits are the most prominent. </p>
  <p>Here’s a simplified example.</p>
  <h3>Cool Widgets offers</h3>
  <p>Standard Operating Environment – Significantly reducing the complexity of your IT infrastructure</p>
  <p>System upgrades which are less expensive to license – Providing excellent TCO reductions”</p>
  <p>In cases where you’re selling to an audience who knows very little about your product or service, lead with benefits (e.g. if you’re selling something technical to a non-technical audience).</p>
  <p>Here’s the same simplified example, reversed for a novice audience…</p>
  <h3>Cool Widgets offers</h3>
  <p>Reduced complexity of IT infrastructure – We can implement a Standard Operating Environment for your organization</p>
  <p>Reduced TCO – We can upgrade your IT to systems that are less expensive to license”</p>
  <h2>Structure</h2>
  <p>How do you structure your site such that your customers will be sure to read your most compelling benefits? The answer is, keep it short ‘n sweet. And make it scannable. This doesn’t mean you have to cut features or benefits. You just have to structure your site to accommodate your message. </p>
  <p>While every site is different, as a rule of thumb it’s a good idea to introduce your main features and benefits on your home page. Summarise them – preferably using bullet points, but at the very least, clearly highlight them so that your audience can scan-read (e.g. bold, underline, color, link). </p>
  <p>Then link from each summarised feature or benefit to a detailed description. Try to keep each page to approximately 200-400 words.   <p>TIP: In cases where you need to introduce features and benefits which are generic to your field (rather than specific to your offering), your home page is generally the best place to do it. From there, you can lead to a second page summarising the specific features and benefits of your offering.</p>

  <p>Web copy is about far more than just clever words. It’s essential that you identify the benefits you offer your customer, and that you can convince your customer you actually deliver those benefits. </p>

  <p>User documentation is all too often written by programmers for programmers. It tends to focus on the product’s features, rather than the user’s tasks. Generally, programmers aren’t in the ideal position to be writing user documentation. </p>
  <p>They’re too close to the bits and bytes, and they’re too far from the user. To them, what the product can do tends to be far more important than what the user can do with the product. </p>
  <p>It’s a subtle – but vital – distinction. Research shows that the key to effective user documentation is writing task-oriented help. Even better, write your help according to the minimalist theory. </p>
  <p>In the documentation world, “minimalism” is a fancy word for a commonsense practice. In basic terms, it means to write to your reader and keep it simple. </p>
  <p>The theory itself has a lot of twists and turns. If you want to read a great – but slightly wordy – book on the subject, check out the book “Minimalism Beyond the Nurnberg Funnel”, 1998, edited by John Carroll. </p>
  <p>In the meantime, if you can tick every item in the following checklist, you’ll be well on your way to usable online help that both your readers and your managers will thank you for.</p>
  <h2>Helpful Help Checklist</h2>
  <ol>
    <li>Base the help on real tasks (or realistic examples)</li>
    <li>Structure the help based on task sequence – Chapter headings should be goals and topics should be tasks</li>
    <li>Respect the reader&#x27;s activity – this is generally more about what you don’t do than what you do. Don’t waste the reader’s time by diving off into tangents</li>
    <li>Exploit prior knowledge and experience – Draw the reader’s attention to previous tasks, experiences, successes, and failures</li>
    <li>Prevent mistakes - &quot;Ensure you do x before doing y&quot;</li>
    <li>Detect and identify mistakes - &quot;If this fails, you may have entered the path incorrectly&quot;</li>
    <li>Fix mistakes - &quot;Re-enter the path&quot;</li>
    <li>Provide error info at end of tasks where necessary (rule of thumb, one error info note per three tasks is a good average)</li>
    <li>Don&#x27;t break up instructions with notes, cautions, warnings, and exceptional cases - Put these things at the end of the instruction, wherever possible</li>
    <li>Be brief, don&#x27;t spell everything out, especially things that can be taken for granted</li>
    <li>Omit conceptually and note information where possible or link to it. Perhaps provide expansion information at the end of the topic, plus maybe a note that there are other ways to perform the task/goal, but this is the easiest</li>
    <li>Sections should look short and read short</li>
    <li>Provide closure for sections (e.g., back to original screen/goal)</li>
    <li>Provide an immediate opportunity to act and encourage exploration and innovation (use active invitations to act, such as, &quot;See for yourself...&quot; or &quot;Try this...&quot; rather than passive invitations such as, &quot;You can...&quot;)</li>
    <li>Get users started quickly</li>
    <li>Allow for reading in any order - make each section modular, especially goals, but perhaps tasks (definitely if they can be performed in a different order)</li>
    <li>Highlight things that are not typical</li>
    <li>Use active voice rather than passive voice</li>
    <li>Try to account for the user&#x27;s environment in your writing</li>
    <li>Before writing anything, ask yourself “Will this help my reader?”</li>
  </ol>
  <p>By building these practices into your documentation process, you’ll find that your online help becomes easier to write, shorter, and far more usable for your reader. What’s more, your boss will love you!</p>

  <p>Here’s 5 top tips to help you supercharge your motivation:</p>
  <h2>Create a picture board and fill it with images of your desired goals. </h2>
  <p>The car you want to own, the house you want to live in, the area where you want to live yes, they’re the obvious ones. Others could be pictures of holiday destinations, trophies, first-class travel tickets, clothes you want to buy, fine restaurants you want to frequent – whatever you can think of that gets your pulse racing.</p>
  <h2>Get Angry.</h2>

    <li>dining out</li>
    <li>visiting an endless line of relatives and friends – these won’t help you get what you want and all of them will rob time from you. </li>

  <p>Valuable time that you can use much more effectively by investing it in YOU. Remember this: You have a finite amount of time here on Earth. You don’t know how much time you have – no one does. </p>
  <p>But it’s how you use the time you have that counts. So make your time count and that means starting from right NOW.</p>
  <h2>Conformity. </h2>
  <p>Are you a mindless little sheep who’s way too timid to pursue your own way? Do you have to follow where everyone else goes, doing exactly what everyone else does and therefore, who gets the same levels of happiness as all the other little sheep? Seriously, does this describe YOU? </p>
  <p>Are you too frightened to be different than all of the other sheep because they wouldn’t like it if you decided to follow a different path? </p>
  <p>So you dutifully trot along following all the other sheep because if they’re doing it then that’s how it is right? But if you do what everyone else does you’ll just get what everyone else gets. </p>
  <p>Do you want to be a mindless, timid little sheep who blindly follows all the other sheep? Or do you want to be a leader, a warrior who possesses the courage to be uniquely you and to do what you want to do and make your dreams happen? If so then this means you have to be more like a tiger than a sheep. </p>
  <p>Do you really want to be a sheep? I mean, haven’t we got enough sheep already?</p>
  <h2>Fear your fear. </h2>
  <p>Fear is the force that is determined to stop you in your tracks and rob your dreams from you. But it can only do this if you let it. </p>
  <p>Are you going to let this cruel destructive charlatan trample on your dreams, steal your happiness and crush your spirit? Imagine this thought haunting your final days: “I didn’t do the things I wanted because I was too frightened to live”. </p>
  <p>And by then, it’ll be far too late to conquer fear. Refuse to let fear spoil your life and start taking action – now! The world is waiting for your unique gifts. Why keep it waiting any longer?</p>
