The Scrum Master facilitates the event to make it productive, encourages the Scrum Team members to keep it under the time-box, and also participates in the retrospective as a peer Scrum Team member. The Scrum Master encourages the Scrum Team to improve by finding ways and means to improvise their development process and practices to make it more efficient, effective and enjoyable. In every Sprint Retrospective, the Scrum Team finds plans to increase the product quality by improving the processes or adapting to the definition of “Done”.

The outcome of any Sprint Retrospective is an improvement plan for the upcoming Sprint. The improvement plan will contain a list of action items to be implemented in the next Sprint. The plan will be part of the Sprint Backlog of the next Sprint.

Initial contact with the client starts with identifying your primary client. Once after identifying the primary client, identifying the problems and expectations will be the next steps. Below is the list of questions that helps to uncover.

Identifying Problems:

Describe to me the problems of the team. What are some specific examples?

What do team members do that you see as a problem? What are some particular cases?

How widespread are the issues? Do they occur all the time or only under certain conditions or with specific individuals?

When did the problem begin? What else was happening at that time or shortly before the problem started?

In what ways do members contribute to the issues? In what ways do you contribute to the issues?

Product Management Bootcamp

Consequences:

What are the implications of the problem?

How does the problem affect the team's ability to produce quality products or deliver quality services? Work together? Meet individual needs? What are some examples?

Scrum Master is not only required to service and coach the Team & PO. Scrum Master should focus on serving the organization in loads of things. It’s a common misunderstanding that people think Scrum Master focus should lie on only PO and Team.

The Scrum Master can share the outcome of the retrospective with the management. Management needs to know who told what but what has been identified as a collective improvement by the team can be shared.

Product Management Bootcamp

Scrum Master helps organization in adopting & implementing Scrum, changing process, structures & policies, guiding other scrum masters & teams and so on. Scrum Master is a change agent who is responsible for guiding Organization and help them change

Scrum Framework

Any product development starts with creating a product vision. Vision is an image of the future. The Product Owner collaborates with the stakeholders like the users, investors, buyers, sponsors, subject matter experts, and anybody who can contribute to the vision and crafts a Product Vision.

The Product Owner does a competitor analysis to create

Product Positioning

Promotion Strategy

Pricing Strategy

User research will happen next to understand how users do the job today, pains they face in doing their job, and creatively come up with the list of product features to solve their problems. This list in Scrum named Product Backlog.

Product Management Bootcamp

Product Owner then works with the sponsors to understand the revenue and margin goals to prioritize the Product Backlog such that the features which solve the user problem while helping the business succeed.

The Market research, User research, and the Business Model Design together called as Product Discovery. Scrum does not prescribe how do you make the discovery. In the case of complex products, you do not have to spend more time on Product Discovery as it will be an ongoing activity.

Broadcasting

Once the Product Owner accepts the work done by the team, one of the team members who were there during the acceptance of the work can announce.

Work is done and accepted.

Where are we towards the Sprint goal?

Boardwalk

When there is visibility about the progress is available for the team, then every team member knows what is expected out of them. They automatically work towards the team goal. The boardwalk is one of the ways to do Daily Scrum.

In the boardwalk, one of the team members walks to the board and reads what happened since the last sync up

Product Management Bootcamp

Pair Update

In Pair update, the developers update what they are working on and along with whom. In a PBI, more than one developer will work at a time and so one can collectively call out what is happening on that item. One person will update the progress on the item, which is in progress, along with the names of people who are working on it.

Believe that everyone is naturally creative and resourceful.

People naturally are equipped with all the resources that they need. They are born creative too. People can solve problems on their own and can achieve all the goals they aspire, on their own. Then why people are always in constant pursuit of resources? People are just not looking at the right place. They need coaching and Scrum Master can help them with that.

Flexible to my team’s choices and stringent on team’s comfort zone.

As discussed in earlier resolutions, getting different solutions is very important to arrive at a more efficient one. Moreover, it’s the team who decides how to build a product increment and thus they should decide. Scrum Master should be flexible with team’s choices. Once people attain comfort zone, they reach a point of stagnation and they do not learn new things or innovate. Spending long time in stagnation will become worsening and they will eventually fail.

Make my team cross functional.

Team is cross-functional, and they have different skills, experiences and ability. Together they are too strong and can deliver a valuable product. A cross functional team have all the competencies and they don’t have to depend on others who are not part of the Scrum Team. Dependencies on other members who are not part of the team increases the chances of not getting the work done within the time-box.

Promote team appreciation and appraisals from this year. Teach them that they fail as a team and succeed as a team.

Team members fail to understand that there is no individual success. Let’s take an example of an individual completing all his/her work for the sprint while the team haven’t delivered sprint commitment. Everyone failed including the one who thought that he/she have completed their work. End of the day, delivering the feature to the customer is the goal and not completing one’s own task is. The way we change the rewarding system in the Organization helps to achieve team appreciation rather than individual appreciation. Teamwork is essential in delivering value to the customers and there by bringing revenue to the Organization.
