Statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry - the elections in Angola
On August 24, general elections were held in the Republic of Angola, which were held in a peaceful and calm atmosphere. The National Election Commission officially announced preliminary data (after processing 97.03% of ballots), according to which the ruling party Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) won, gaining 51.07% of the votes.
In accordance with the legislation of the country, the leader of the electoral list of the winning party – the current Head of the Angolan State Joao Manuel Goncalves Lawrence, who was re-elected for a second term, becomes President of Angola.
We regard the results of the vote as evidence of the high confidence shown by the Angolan people to the MPLA party, the effectiveness of its course for socio-economic transformation in the country. We are aimed at further energetic expansion of multifaceted Russian-Angolan cooperation for the benefit of our countries, in the interests of strengthening peace and stability on the African continent.
