About the celebration of the Day of the Russian Language in Mauritius
5.06.2022. On the eve of the Day of the Russian Language and the birthday of Alexander Pushkin, the Russian Embassy and the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots Permanently Residing in Mauritius organized a poetry festival in the city park in the suburb of Port Louis, where in 2019 Russian diplomats installed a bust of the great poet, which is a copy of the work of the famous Soviet sculptor M.K.Anikushin. The installation of the bust became possible thanks to the assistance of the director of the All-Russian Pushkin Museum S.M.Nekrasov.
The solemn event was also attended by the Director of the Russian Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mauritius R.Bissundoyal, members of the Association of Graduates of Soviet and Russian Universities, students of the local lyceum Lyaburdone, where the Russian language is studied.
The participants of the meeting laid flowers near the bust of the great Russian poet and read Pushkin's poems in English, French and Creole. As never before, the patriotic ode to the "Slanderers of Russia" sounded in Russian.
It should be mentioned that in April of this year, an act of vandalism was committed against the bust of Alexander Pushkin - a nationalist-minded group of Ukrainians on the island doused it with yellow and blue paint. A criminal case was opened on the fact of vandalism, and the staff of the Russian Embassy and the technical service of the Port Louis City Hall carried out the necessary work to clean the monument. Pushkin is alive, Pushkin will live!
