Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the BRICS countries

On May 19, 2022, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov took part in a full-format meeting of the foreign ministers of the BRICS countries via videoconference.
The meeting was opened by a welcome address by Chinese President Xi Jinping, in which, in particular, the demand for the efforts of the BRICS countries and the entire international community to support genuine multilateralism was noted.


During the meeting, a substantive exchange of views on topical issues of the international agenda took place. The Ministers discussed the issues of strengthening collective principles in world affairs, regional conflicts, the fight against new challenges and threats, the interaction of the "five" states on multilateral platforms. Close attention is paid to the current state and prospects of the five-sided cooperation.
Sergey Lavrov outlined in detail the principal assessments of the development of the situation in Ukraine and the ongoing special military operation.


The meeting also included a separate session in the BRICS Plus format with the participation of the foreign ministers of Argentina, Egypt, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Senegal and Thailand. Interested discussions took place on the state and prospects of the development of the global governance system with an emphasis on cooperation in the UN, WTO, and the Group of Twenty.
