How we did the cover «Destiny 2 — Deep Stone Lullaby»
Hi everyone! Love and health to all of you!
Today i'd like to tell you how we did the cover of the «Deep Stone Lullaby — Destiny 2 OST».
Here you'll find out how we created Bray lab at our home, how we tried to resurrect Cade-6, how Sergey Seven made a mask of Exp Stranger and how much money it took us.
Just an important moment — almost everything what you'll see below was made by passionate people, not professionals, with their own hands, a lot was made for the first time in our free from work and house chores time. So we kindly ask you to make allowance for that when giving your comments.
Introduction.
After the work on the cover «Destiny 2 — Journey» was completed, we knew it wasn't the last project connected with Destiny Universe and that our enthusiastic team would get back to this game universe for sure again.
After a short discussion it was agreed «Deep Stone Lullaby» from the wonderful raid «Deep Stone Crypt» would be the best choice.
Recording!
Track recording is a complicated, nervous and energy-consuming matter. To succeed in it we had to attract additional capacity and got help from our dear friend and sound designer Elisabeth.
Under the watchful eye and sensitive guidance of Sergey and Elisabeth, Sasha successfully recorded a violin in a studio.
Frankly speaking, it's hard to describe the process of violin recording — it's better to see it for yourselves, also, the video can't convey all the storm of emotions that everyone was filled with being nearby.
After recording it was time for track building. It was started with creating orchestral accompaniment, bass and percussion. To help us in the arrangement, we invited our friend, a talented musician Rodion Kudryavtchev. When all the parts were ready. Sergey started mixing the recording. Actually, it's a long careful process as a result of which all the instruments begin to sound as a unit but the violin comes to the fore. Balance, panorama, equalization, compression, effects, etc.
Videoclip!
Alongside the recording the process of the film production was launched.
Anton AnDrag wrote the script and threw a preliminary storyboard, we discussed a general concept, made some adjustments and completed the storyboard. After that we started to look for locations and make the props.
It was agreed to hold winter shooting on the frozen Yenisey River.
We found the site where water discharge from the reservoir made and in winter quite intricate ice figures are obtained there.
It was the first shooting experience is such harsh conditions. The temperature was -21 degrees below zero and the wind was so strong that it penetrated through. The equipment refused to work. The drone refused to take off at some point, which cost us a few shots.
We had to warm up our cold feet and hands and drink hot tea after each filming take. Very difficult shots.
«The Bray lab in Europe» (Bray Exoscience) was chosen for the second scene. After some unsuccessful attempts to find something similar in photo studios we decided to create our own lab in Sergey's house. Why not actually?)
We bought necessary materials and started building the locations. I'm not going to describe the process in detail — everything is fairly standard.
If you have any questions, you can write your comments or a personal message and i'll definitely answer you! I'll attach some more photos of the process to understand the level of construction better.
Obviously, after the wall and the ceiling were building, they had to be painted. The combination of yellow and white was chosen for this purpose.
The walls and the ceiling were made, everything was painted and dried. Now it was time to choose a wall art, set the right lighting and take a test shot to see what it would look loke and if something had to be improved.
As for a painting, after researching locations in Europe we decided to put this graphics on the wall. It seemed the most suitable one to our tasks.
Putting the image on the wall
We rented a smoke machine, put on the light, and viola!
OH WHAT'S THAT? It's photo-montage cut leading us to the next step — it's props!
Props
It's important to mention and thank Sergey for the attribute which he made himself:
3. Anarchy violin. A violin with reference to our favorite exotic weapon
As you can see there're symbols of the fallen on the violin. We tried to make it authentically drawing from «Tangled Shore» location (rest in peace). I guess it turned out very well :)
4. Together with Dmitry we made glasses «Crystocrene helm». Everything glows and protects from wind, snow and dust.
That's what they look like on Alexandra.
5. That's a pyramid from the tailer «Beyond light» DLC. We need it for a short episode, so it was made without proper details to save our time.
Unfortunately, we had to cut out the shot with the pyramid from the final video and we're sad about it :(
Our friend Tanya made a raincoat of Exo Stranger focusing on the screenshots from the gameplay. It's curious that Elsi Bray's raincoat in «Destiny 1» and «Destiny 2» are different. Just an observation :)
Keeping on filming!
«All done, all done» (Kadi 55-30) and we're finishing shooting in a makeshift Bray lab. Having rented a smoke machine, we blew smoke, put on the light, asked neighbours not to call on the police (as we did it at night), stocked up on tea and coffee and started!
At after the winter footage was filmed and the shoot in the lab was completed, there was one more complicated matter left. Actually it wasn't quite clear how to make this shot.
Because of being completely busy, we had to give up the idea to repeat this shot and made some changes to the script :(
Life circumstances make their adjustments to the filming process.
That's why we decided... to add Cyde-6 to the story! Yes, exactly!
Why not? Europe, music from «Deep Stone Crypt» — cradle of the first Exo :) It makes perfect sense!
Sergey made a Cyde-6 "resurrection" interface.
We hung wires and cables that we were lucky to find in the area, put on the lights and shooted the final scene with Cyde (Sergey) and Elisabeth (Alexandra)
Of course, everything wasn't simple - the inside temperature was round about minus 15 degrees celsius. Everything is authentic :)
Video cover
Finally, we had to shoot the cover.
We rented a photo studio and asked Sasha's sister Helen for help. She agreed to play a role of Exo Stranger for our cover.
The end.
Lastly, we'd like to thank our kind friends who helped us a lot in creating this video:
Helen Karadmitriyadi, Svetlana Paramonova, Dmitry Chernyh, Dmitry Kubrak, Eugenia Komissarova, Elisabeth Karnauhova, Rodion Kudravtsev, Tanya Shvargonova.
