Velvet Fabric
Velvet is one of the most luxurious fabrics known to man throughout history, characterized by its lovely texture and striking luster; this textile has always been limited to the wealthy class of people or nobles, or as it is said: “velvet society” due to its high cost.
What is Velvet Made of?
Basically, the traditional natural velvet was made of 100% silk, which makes it so expensive, and it still is so far (if you find it).
But today, there are many materials used in the manufacture of velvet, such as mainly cotton, linen, wool, and synthetic fibers (mostly in combination), so the term “velvet” now is used to refer to the fabric according to the method of its manufacture and not according to the material of its manufacture, as in jacquard fabrics.
How is Velvet Made?
Velvet is made by a unique loom, which weaves the threads of velvet between two or more layers of fabric at the same time in a fantastic way, then separates the pieces of fabric in the middle so that the whole pile of velvet is equal height, usually less than 0.2 inch, then we have two identical pieces of velvet.
This way, the original velvet is distinguished from the rest of the flat-woven fabrics, while the velvet pile is upraised, giving it a lovely texture.
