Ferroalloys - an overview

Ferroalloys is a term used to identify various alloys of iron with a high proportion of one or more other elements; e.g. Cr, Al, Mn, Mo, etc. Used in the production of different steels and alloys and closely associated with the iron and steel industries, ferroalloys are produced generally by two methods: in a blast furnace or in an electric arc furnace:

a) A BLAST FURNACE

b) An ELECTRIC ARC FURNACE

What is Ferroalloys?

Ferroalloys are iron metal alloy composed of aluminum, silicon, or magnesium primarily used in steel production. To enhance mental properties, such as durability, the tensile strength with magnetic properties makes them useful in constructing electrical appliances & large motor. Ferrous metals are also found helpful in automobiles, housing construction, railways & roadways transportation, etc. Ferroalloys impart unique characteristics to steel, such as improved hardness, resistance to corrosion, higher abrasion resistance, enhanced tensile strength at extreme temperatures, and significant creep strength.

The main applications of ferroalloys occur in the steelmaking process. They are added to steel to improve properties like strength, ductility, and fatigue or corrosion resistance. Additionally, ferroalloys can have several other tasks, such as in refining, deoxidation, modification, and control of nonmetallic inclusions and precipitates.
