Covid cases spike to 20,000+ in a day, death toll crosses 16000

India has seen the highest coronavirus cases in one day with 20,000 being reported from all over India. Maharashtra again saw the highest number in the country with around 6,368 being reported in a day, followed by Tamil Nadu (3713), Delhi (2948) and Telangana (1087). Around 414 deaths from the virus were reported during the day. The total toll of coronavirus cases stands at 5, 29,533 while active cases crossed the 2 lakh barrier. Telangana became the fourth state in the country to register over 1000 cases in a day.

Eight states – Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Telangana, Gujrat Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal contributed around 86% of coronavirus cases in India. Indicating the main challenges of combating the disease lies in these states. The above data was shared by the Health ministry with the group of ministers on Covid-19 meet. Health ministry has asked the states to ramp up testing and reach the capacity of 30000 samples in a day. Health Minister Harsh Vardhan who chaired the meeting said the doubling time of Covid-19 cases has improved to 19 days from 3 days before the lockdown.

South Asia region has emerged as a hotspot just behind the North American and Latin American region with an increased daily spurt in COVID-19 cases.
