Sekhar Basu Passes away at 68
Veteran Nuclear Scientist Sekhar Basu passed away due to COVID-19. He was 68. He was the former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. He passed away on Thursday the morning, the hospital confirmed. Dr. Basu was awarded a Padma Shri in 2014.
Dr. Basu was a mechanical engineer who had made major contributions in developing India’s Atomic program. One of his major contributions was pioneering the highly complex reactor for India’s first nuclear-powered submarine INS Arihant.
The hospital official said,” Dr Basu was suffering from COVID-19 and other kidney ailments. He died at 4.50 am.”
He joins a list of important personalities who have succumbed to the coronavirus.
Currently India is seeing a second wave of the pandemic with nearly 5.73 mil confirmed cases and over 91 thousand deaths registered. Nearly 81 thousand cases recorded in the last 24 hours and 1129 deaths.
