China pouring lots of money amid border tension on infrastructure in Tibet

In a fresh move China is planning to invest more than 1 trillion yuan ($146 billion) in infrastructure in Tibet region, including some old and pending projects.

The renewed push to step-up development in remote areas in Tibet and impoverished southwest regions signals Beijing’s intent to bolster frontier security amid high tension on the border with India.

Last week during a senior meet in the Communist party the discussion was on Tibet’s future governance, China’s President Xi Jinping lauded achievements and praised frontline officials but said more efforts were needed to enrich, rejuvenate and strengthen unity in the region.

He said a number of major infrastructure projects and public facilities would be completed, including the Sichuan-Tibet Railway, according to remarks published by the official Xinhua news agency.

It was not immediately clear how much of the targeted spending is new, or over how many years it would be invested.

Last month, China announced plans to expand the country’s railway network by one-third over the next 15 years.
