Premier League review

The Premier League concluded yesterday, with some surprises and heartbreaks.

The Champions

Liverpool had won the League a few weeks ago and ended the League with a win over Newcastle United. The final score was 3-1. Liverpool were knocked out from this year’s Champions League by Atletico Madrid before the pandemic. Now Jurgen Klopp’s men would have to try for European Glory next season.

Champions League qualification

Manchester City were the runner ups. As CAS had earlier lifted the ban it meant that they are guaranteed to play in the Champions League season next season. They beat Norwich city 5-0.

Manchester United were rewarded for their brilliant second half performance of the season. They were third in the table after beating Leicester city at the king power 2-0. United now return to the Champions League after a year’s absence.

Chelsea were equal on points with Manchester United but United had a better goal difference, which meant even though Chelsea beat wolves 2-0 they could only manage fourth place.

Europa League qualification

Leicester city were placed second before the break and much of the season. But late injuries to their key players took a toll on them. They dropped from second to fifth position after losing to United on the final day. Europa League is not that bad for Brendon Rodgers’ side though but they would have loved to be in the Champions League.

Tottenham were a surprise for many of the pundits as their season had been horrible before the break. A team with players like Son, Kane and Alli definitely deserved Champions League football but could only scramble for Europa League, which didn’t look possible a few weeks ago.

Heart brakes

Two teams who thought they deserved better were Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sheffield United. After being so competitive for the majority of the season both the teams went through a bad spell.

Wolves were touted to qualify for the Europa league but their loss at Chelsea enabled Tottenham to leapfrog them and qualify for Europe.

Sheffield United’s first season back at the Premier League would have been more surprising if they had ended in top six but injuries to key players brought a half to their good run of form.

Relegation

Norwich were already relegated from the League and the other two teams to join them were Watford and Bournemouth.

Watford were locked on points with Villa. But their loss to arsenal 3-2 and villa’s draw at West Ham only meant that Watford were to be relegated after enjoying five years of top flight football.
