Twenty Indian Army personnel martyred on LAC
A major casualty occurred on the India-China border after almost 45 years. Twenty armed personnel were martyred in a violent face off with Chinese soldiers in Ladakh.
The two countries share a long disputed border called LAC. China claims more than 90,000 sq km in the eastern Himalayas disputed by Delhi and another 38,000 sq km in the west.
The two nations fought a full-scale warfare in the region in 1962, and tensions have flared into armed confrontations on numerous instances since, which include the 2013 face off and in 2017 too.
“During the de-escalation process under way in the Galwan Valley, a violent face-off took place yesterday [Monday] night with casualties on both sides,” the Indian army spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.
The men were killed in hand to hand combat as using of weapons is barred due to a treaty signed by both the countries in the past.
A senior reporter in The Global Times (mouthpiece of the administration in Beijing) tweeted that five Chinese soldier were killed and 11 injured in clash with India at the Galwan Valley in Ladakh.
The editor-in-chief of the Global Times then warned India by tweeting, "I want to tell the Indian side, don't be arrogant and misread China's restraint as being weak"
As usual China's Foreign Ministry accused India of crossing the border and warned it against "unilateral action".
The two armies have moved artillery guns in the region, but officials from both the sides were negotiating and said to be gradually de-escalating the situation before Monday’s incident.
