Government allows use of Dexamethasone to treat Covid-19 patients
The government on Saturday has allowed the use of commonly used steroid dexamethasone, the first drug to show improved survival in severe patients in recent trials by Oxford University. According to research dexamethasone lowers fatality rate in those needing oxygen by 20% and by 35% in those who are on ventilator support. Dexamethasone is under government price control which makes it highly affordable to all.
Dexamethasone is a highly selective glucocorticoid which has immune suppressant and anti-inflammatory action. This drug is also used in the treatment of allergic conditions, shock and cerebral oedema. In severe cases of coronavirus patients, there is increased inflammation in lungs, which can be fatal to the already declining health of the patient and therefore by using this drug the condition of the patient can be controlled and improved.
But medical experts have advised the use of the drug to only those who require ventilator and oxygen support. As indiscriminate use of the drug can do more harm than good.
