Volcano erupts in Indonesia

A volcano in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province erupted on Sunday, which released ash and smoke as high as four kilometres into the sky. Due to this more than 2,700 residents had to be evacuated, the country’s disaster mitigation agency said.

Indonesia is a country with more than 130 active Volcanoes, more than any other country. Although there is no specific pattern to when and which volcano would erupt. The exact location of Mt. Ile Lewotobi volcano is about 2,600 kilometres east of Indonesia’s capital of Jakarta.

A 17-year-old witness, Muhammad Ilham, told Reuters that resident nearby were “panicked and they’re still looking for refuge and in need of money right now”.

Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Centre said on its website that the area near the volcano is likely to be inundated with “hot clouds, lava stream, lava avalanche, and poisonous gas”.

This is the second volcanic eruption after the Merapi volcano on the island of Java and Sinabung on Sumatra, which erupted earlier this month.
