Community spread of COIVD-19

The COVID-19 virus has begun spreading communally in India, the IMA (Indian medical association) has confirmed. It has also issued a warning to the citizens as they should take more precautions and strictly maintain social distancing in public places.

Community spread is when someone gets the virus without any known contact with a sick person.

There are over a million registered cases in India with the numbers hitting 30,000 patients on an average from the past few days. Dr. VK Monga, the Chairman of IMA Hospital Board of India, told news agency ANI, “This is now an exponential growth. Every day the number of cases is increasing by more than around 30,000. This is a bad situation for the country”.

He further stated that the virus is spreading to rural areas. “This is a bad sign. It now shows a community spread,” Dr. Monga said.

To curb the community spread of the virus the Kerala government has decided to adopt a “cluster care” method, which means the areas with highest cases will be closed and the testing and treatment will be done inside them.

The state health minister KK Shailaja said on Saturday, “Those in the clusters must strictly follow the health protocol including wearing of masks, social distancing, handwash, etc.”

She also said, “We must keep in mind that the clusters are formed just before the community transmission.”
