Trump wants to expand G7 summit

On Saturday U.S President Trump postponed the annual Group of Seven summit which was going to be held in June and invited other countries like India, Russia, Australia and South Korea to join the meeting.

“I don’t feel that the G7 group properly represents what’s going on in the world. It’s a very outdated group of countries,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One.

The G7 member countries are Britain, France, U.S, Japan, Germany, Italy and Canada. It’s hosted by the G7 president of that year which currently is United States. The summit doesn’t have any legal or political authority.

In 1997, Russia joined the group making it the G8 but in 2013 Russia invaded Crimea and other members excluded Russia as part of sanction against it, once again G8 became the G7.

The meeting could happen in September, either after or before United Nations General Assembly.

It is not clear whether Trump’s desire to invite the additional countries this year was an effort to permanently expand the G7. But White House spokesperson Alyssa Farah said that Trump wanted to bring the other countries to talk about the future of China at the summit.
