Blocking Cinema 4D: Product Video
What is blocking?
Blocking is the process of roughing in a camera move or shot layout with minimal animation, using approximation of the final mesh and scene assets. Camera moves and object motion placement is typically done at this stage of the animation process, and in some cases, you may see more than just object placement motion. The idea is to capture the basic camera locations, pacing and timing for the shot. Lighting is not typically placed a this stage, with the exception of scene lighting to make the elements visible.
Given that animation is such a time-consuming and resource-intensive process, blocking enables changes to occur before a project gets to a late stage of production. Of course, changes can occur at any point when working on digital animation, but if blocking is done well, it will result in a much smoother production process.
Process
I considered camera placement, framing, and movements, from simple pans to complex tracking shots. There was a lot of optimization, adjustments, planning, and coordination go into scenes to get these final frames of perfection.
Conclusion
When working on your own projects, it is a good practice to take the time needed between takes to go over your shots and compositions, making sure everything you want is in the right place. This draft version gives you a clearly defined idea of the direction and focus of the animated film or project.
