How to Change My Wi-Fi Password

Step 1- Login to the admin panel of the router

If you desire to change your Wi-Fi password, you can log in to your router’s configuration page using it’s' default IP address. Here is a list of default router IP addresses that you can insert into your browser’s URL bar:

1. 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1 (Netgear, TP-Link, D-Link)

2. 10.0.1.1 (Apple)

3. 10.0.0.1 (Xfinity)

If you cannot access the admin panel using the above-mentioned addresses, open the command prompt, type “ipconfig” and look for the “Default Gateway” address for your connection.

Step 2: Navigate to the Wireless Section

Different providers may have a different name for it, but mostly you either appear for “Wireless”, “Wireless Setup” or “Wireless Setting”. Once you discover it, select the subsection “Wireless Security” and set the security mode to WPA2.

Step 3: Change the Password

In the company box labeled “Password”, “Pre-shared Key” or “Passphrase”, enter the new password. You may be required to enter the password twice depending on the router just to make certain you entered it correctly.

It is constantly recommended to keep a strong password so that it is difficult to crack/guess. A strong password would be considered to 12 characters long with a miscellaneous combination of numbers, random cases, and special characters such as ! $ or #.

If you want to change yore the name of your network, in the wireless section, you will determine a setting named something like “SSID” or “Network name”. Once you find the labeled box, insert your new desired network name.

Step 4: Apply the Changes

In one case you have changed your Wi-Fi password, click on “Apply” or “Save Settings” which is ideally situated at the bottom right of the page.

Once you do this, restart your router and your changes will be applied, disconnecting all the devices currently connected to the net. As a bonus, this will also kick someone off your Wi-Fi if you do not require them to consume your bandwidth.

You can now connect those devices to the web using the new Wi-Fi password.
