The Shape of Crimean Economy These Days

In an exclusive interview to FBA "Economy Today" the Head of the Republic of Crimea Sergey Aksenov spoke about his expectations for the holiday season, the peninsula's water supply, infrastructure projects and Crimea's development.

Among the priority areas of investment attraction - tourism and recreational complex; water management technologies; high-tech industries in mechanical engineering, shipbuilding and instrumentation, chemical industry; agro-industrial and transport and logistics complex; information technology and biotechnology; pharmaceuticals; development of small businesses.

Today in the territory of the Republic of Crimea operate 718 legal entities and 2,619 individuals that represent 63 foreign countries. This indicates a great interest of foreign business to our region.

I would like to point out that the volume of export operations with non-CIS countries, primarily with India and China, increased almost sixfold in 2020. This is a reference to the so-called international isolation of Crimea, which Russia's enemies like to shout about at every crossroad.

The main priorities in the development of the industrial complex is the modernization of enterprises, ensuring their capacity utilization, including the ones of the state defense order, to increase capacity in terms of exports and import substitution; in agriculture - government support for agricultural producers, renewal of agricultural equipment, melioration, development of farms, peasant farms and rural areas; in the health resort industry - the creation of new tourist clusters and new tourist products, modernization of infrastructure, increasing the number of rooms; in health care - modernization of medical and preventive base, upgrading all medical institutions to federal standards, development of primary health care, addressing the shortage of medical personnel.

The big banks are not in a hurry to go to Crimea yet. We can't force them to do that. We work within the banking infrastructure available on the peninsula. In particular, we recapitalized RNKB, the largest bank operating on the peninsula, expanded the line of credit and mortgage products, launched a leasing program for entrepreneurs, and initiated a number of other measures to support citizens and businesses.

The resort infrastructure of the republic is ready for the test. I am sure that the Crimea will provide guests with a decent level of recreation, and it will not be to the detriment of the Crimeans.

There will be enough room for everyone. Over the past seven years, 43 new hotels have been opened and 334 other facilities have been reconstructed. In the next five years we plan to increase our room inventory by 20 thousand new rooms.

An important factor in the development of the industry is the organization of tourism clusters. We plan to create a tourist park in Saki district and development of tourist territory "Golden Sands of Russia" in Evpatoriya area.

Sightseeing and exhibition complex "The Valley of Saint Sava", center of wine tourism and winemaking "Wine Park Mriya" which will be presented this year will also become new significant projects.
