Introduction to the main setting and characters of the Behero videogame
Chapter 1: overview of the game
In the same vein as for many other japanese and western roleplaying games, Behero be your legend is set in a fantasy world with his own characters and lore, each of them with varying degrees of importance towards the main flow and progress of the story. Like for many other games, the player has the opportunity to name the protagonist in any way he like, plus he's a boy from earth so he's not an otherworldly divity, angel, ubermensch or anything like that (unlike other characters of the game however). The game typically follows a "chosen one" narrative skeleton where you have been picked to be the main savior of this bizzarre fantasy world that has is about to get subjugated and conquered by powerful enemies. Your task is to retrieve the pages of the book of time that went missing while it was in danger of being exploited by Lord Necare (the main villain of the game) in his nefarious plot to capture and imprison the Timekeeper, one of the most powerful beings in the game tasked to preserve balance through time. After the book pages got shattered, many time fissures have begun to appear (does it reminds you of a certain JRPG game?) and legion of armies that are loyal to Lord Necare begun to siege and conquer other epochs in his quest to achieve unlimited power. Here in this article we will discuss the main setting of the game and some of his most important characters a bit more in depth.
Chapter 2: The main characters
The Hero:
The main playable character in the game, a young boy from Earth. He has no name on the game but on the comic book adaptation of the game itself he was know as "Nicolas" (sometimes shortened as "Nick" in certain written sections of the comic book adaptation about him), so maybe we can say that this may have been his official name. He has been chosen by the book of time bought on his bedroom by Sephaestion after he travelled beetwen dimensions searching for the hero that will save his world. His character personality in the game is that of a typicall young teenager that is full of himself thinking that he has already grow up as an adult and that he won't be afraid of anything that will scare other young boys like him. but that's not actually the case as he often get's scared by the sign of weird creatures (especially in the intro where he meets Sephaestion for the first time) but he can also be loyal in his goals and his promises to help others. In the game he can equip different kind of items like swords, shields, armors and other summonable helpers that can aid him in battles, he also gets many mounts in the game that can be used to speed up travel in the main overworld of the game (luckly, you don't need to scan any cards to unlock them in the game). At the start of the game you have to finish a randomized personality test in order to select a class for him to gain a few bonuses in battle that can be combined alongside other passive effects of various sets of cards as a way to increase his effectivenes in battle. These classes do not affect his apparence too much in the game, his game sprite is almost the same but with just a few minor color changes. He's typically shown on most promotial adverts under the warrior class (with a few shades of dark blue).
Sephaestion:
One of the Timekeeper most trusted assistants and simply know by his friends as "Seph" (as stated in the bio included in the comic book adaptation of the game), he's aiding you during your adventure by providing in depth explanations of the game world and various other gameplay mechanics. His apparence is inspired to that of a faun, a mythological being from greek culture with the legs of a goat and the upper body of a man. His personality is often the opposite of that of the main character and he's often described in the comic book as being timid and easily afraid by most things but he also show a sense of humor providing some comical relief to others that depends on him. After the Timekeeper got defeated during his battle against the powerful Lord Necare, he managed to escape through a dimensional portal with the stolen remains of the shattered book of time in his hands to find the chosen one that will one day be able to free his former master (and also his dearest friend) from prison. After traveling under many different dimensions, dreams and universes without success, he managed to teleport on planet Earth into the closet of the hero's own bedroom while he was being guided by the magic of his book. Initially, the main character of the game got scared and didn't really trust him at all during the first time they meet but suddendly, the book of time was glowing and it had finally made a choice after many failed attempts at finding the right person for doing this dangerous task. The two finally enbarked in an adventure to recover the missing pages of the book of time and to save the various epochs from the evil henchmen of Lord Necare.
The Timekeeper:
The most important character in the game, his task is to mantain balance and harmony beetwen the six ages with the aid of his powerful magic. The creature shares with Sephaeston the same source of inspiration from the fauns of greek mythology, his face resemble that of a tree with leaves coming out of his hair and body (he may be sharing some resemblances to ents, mythical creatures from J.r. tolkien books). He also has a belt with a few potions and other magical artefacts, plus a YingYang simbol from chinese culture in his tunic as an added extra detail. In the game and comic book adaptation he's often described as being wise and a good friend to those who are close to him, he's also not afraid of taking desperate choices in order to defend others. Previously he had led the six ages to prosperity under his own rule before he was confronted by Lord Necare himself in his lust for unlimited power. His original plan to confront him was to travel back in time and train a possible hero that could have defeated Lord Necare before he had conquered all dimensions but this has not proven to be the case as the powerful demon lord had discovered the Timekeeper secret plan and decided to travel back in time to stop him from gaining the upper hand. The battle against Lord Necare has proven to be too difficult for him to handle, so he used his last remaining powers as a move of last resort to fracture the pages of the book of time into many fragments so that it won't be of any benefit to his adversary. Without the book of time, his powers have now weakened and he cannot afford to defeat the powerful demon lord alone if the pages are not reunited. He tasked his most loyal servant to find the rightful person that will eventually liberate him from his dark prison and preserve the flow and balace of time. In some promotional artwork he's also shown holding the Behero handled game console in his hand.
Disclamer: I have modified a copy of the promotional image of this character (the one that is shown here in this article) so that it can be more faithful to the original artwork shown from the instruction booklet and comic book adaptation. -soon I will build a new dedicated article that will show most of the official artworks that have been released so far, stay tuned for more-
Lord Necare:
He is a powerful demon lord that commands an army of monsters that are absolutelly loyal to him, he was originally the ruler of the nightmare age, a dangerous post-apocaliptic epoch full of darkness and powerful creatures. He had conspired since an untold amount of time to get his hands on the absolute power contained within the book of time so that it could seize it from the time castle -the place where the timekeeper originally resided durign most of his rule prior to the advents of the game story-. Originally he was sealed inside his own prison so that he could not be a treath to anyone, but he managed to free himself and conquer his epoch where he was sealed. His character is that of your typical evil villain that wants to conquer everything and is obsessed with power, conquest and nothing else. his design is radically different from that of the previous characters described above, he has a sword that is made out of skulls and bones, he wears no armor on his torso but he has a few pieces of armored boots and two giants iron gloves that cover his hands and his legs. His scarlet crest in his helm resembles a flame he also has a dark red mantle in the back. His source of inspiration may be any kind of villain from fantasy that are usually related to darkness and the underworld like a demon from folklore legends, hades, death and so on. If you look really closelly, you can also notice two dragon tattoos in his chest that are painted crimson red (it could be that the artists of this game had really tried to make his design as detailed as they possibly can). After subjugating the people living on his epoch his aspirations couldn't have stopped there, He wanted to displace the Timekeeper from his status as ruler of all epochs so that he can govern them all with an iron fist, he was capable of using his powers to escape his dimension so that he could sneak into the time castle to realize his plan, he had discovered that the Timekeeper was planning of traveling back in time to train an hero from the past that could have displaced him so he decided to counter the Timekeeper own plan and traveled back in time to battle him in a long and difficult battle to which he ended up winning. He could have stolen the book of time containing the powers of the Timekeeper at their fullest if it wasn't for him having used the last of his power to destroy it, preventing him from becoming the new supreme ruler of time and space. Lord Necare has then jailed the Timekeeper on his epoch away from everyone else and now it is your goal to defeat him and his demons to bring back peace and order in the bizarre world of Behero.
Chapter 3: The world in depth
The world of Behero is divided into many epochs, each with his own theme and characterization. there are six eras in total which each one of them being inspired either by history, fantasy or sci-fi troopes. The world is in a state of temporal flux with each epoch representing a determinate period in time, it exist alongside Earth (where the main character originated from) in a parallel dimension. Each epoch has his own ruler and it is your main task to find them and complete the sidequests of the game in order to progress with the story and collect the missing pages of the book of time. Each world also has his own demonic boss to defeat, so be prepared to level up a lot before you can confront them directly.
The Time castle: Not an epoch per se, but it's where you get teleported at the very start of the game and it serves as the player's own primary base of operation. Here you can heal your character, play minigames and access the different epochs of the game through portals which can be unlocked after progressing forward with the game story.
The Lost Age ("L'Era Perduta" in italian): A setting inspired from primitive ancient history, it is the first epoch that the player visit in the game and it is ruled by Oriono, leader of the Sirachi tribe.
The Golden Age ("L'Era Dell'Oro" in italian): Inspired mostly from ancient Egyptian culture, this is the second epoch that the player can access after recovering the first page of the book of time. It is ruled by Remeph, king of the city of Typerion.
The Enchanted Age ("L'Era Incantata" in italian): The most traditional fantasy setting of the game, it is inspired by western medieval fables and mythical stories. It is ruled by princess Mayena.
The Frozen Age ("L'Era Ghiacciata" in italian): An epoch that is covered in ice and snow, This epoch is ruled by Isis (no, no that isis!) governor of the city of Aisis (ehhmm...), queen of ice and snow.
The New Age ("La Nuova Era" in italian): A setting mostly inspired from modern futuristic sci-fi fantasy with a bit of steampunk thrown into the mix. It is ruled by prime minister Alphius.
The Nightmare Age ("L'Era dell'Incubo" in italian): The last epoch that the player can visit during the final segments of the game, It is inspired mostly by post-apocalyptic troopes. This epoch is ruled by -you guess it- Lord Necare and this is where his legion of demons resides. The Timekeeper is imprisoned here and you have to fight harder in order to liberate him.
And that's all folks! In the future I may consider adding more photos of the game alongside a few scans from the comic book adaptation to this blog. For now, this is all I have and it may take me longer to take more accurate screenshots of the game. -Stay tuned for more-
