SMR is the most competitive method for industrial production of liquid hydrogen. Significant quantity of liquid hydrogen is mainly produced by SMR. Hydrogen production from natural gas provides competitive production prices and high potential for large-scale production. However, due to carbon dioxide emissions, SMR cannot be considered a feasible fuel for mass transport.

Electrolysis is by far the most expensive source for liquid hydrogen. Despite of its high cost, the demand for electrolysis is expected to increase in the coming future.
