🔐 Bitcoin Enthusiast Cracked a 12-Word SEED Phrase in Minutes
A SEED phrase or mnemonic phrase is a set of 12, 15, 18, 21 or 24 words that gives access to crypto assets. The phrase is generated by the wallet from a dictionary that consists of 2048 words. The concept of creating SEED phrases was introduced at the end of 2013 in the proposal to improve Bitcoin 39 (Bip-39).
💻 So, Wicked decided to hold a contest and published a phrase of 12 words in random order. The wallet contained 100,000 Satoshi. In theory, it is almost impossible to carry out such a hack by hand, because there are 479 million possible combinations. But another user hacked the wallet in 25 minutes using the BTCrecover software available on GitHub.
💡 Conclusion: if someone knows your 12 words even in random order, then he can easily steal your crypto assets. Another thing is with a phrase of 24 words - instead of 479 million there are already 6.24 ^ 24 possible combinations (this is a huge number).
