The Principle of Statistical Sampling: The Foundation of Successful Trading

➤ In trading, it is essential to understand and embrace the principle of statistical sampling, as it forms the foundation of any successful strategy. For instance, if you test your strategy on 100 trades and it demonstrates an 80% win rate and a 20% loss rate, that’s an excellent result. However, there’s one crucial factor: you can never predict the sequence of those wins and losses.

Imagine your 80 winning trades are distributed randomly. You might start with 10 consecutive losses, even if your strategy is highly effective in the long run. If you don’t understand this concept, it could lead to doubt, frustration, or even abandoning your strategy altogether.

➤ Trading isn’t about exact predictions—it’s a game of probabilities. A successful trader thinks in terms of “Am I following my strategy?” and “Does it perform well over the long term?” Each individual trade is insignificant on its own—what matters is the outcome over a large sample size.

This mindset requires discipline. You cannot let emotions dictate your actions because even a series of losses is a normal occurrence if your strategy has a statistical edge. The key to success lies in consistency and sticking to your plan.

This is why keeping statistics, analyzing your trades, and trusting the numbers are so important. You must think strategically, understanding that each trade is just a small part of the bigger picture. This is the only way to achieve stability and success in trading.

Reviewing Results: The Last 90 Days of Trading Using the Martingale Method

Every 90 days, I review my performance to identify areas for improvement and enhance the effectiveness of my strategy. Here’s the data for the period from October 25 to January 22 (90 trading days):

  • Total trades: 344
  • Wins: 262
  • Losses: 82
  • Win rate: 76%

These results demonstrate stable strategy performance, but there’s always room for growth. Regularly analyzing such statistics helps not only to evaluate current effectiveness but also to address areas that need improvement.

Remember, trading is not just about profits but also about continuous improvement. There are still many opportunities ahead, and I’m confident that the results will continue to improve.
