HOW-TO SURF FISH - SALTWATER FISHING BASICS

TOP SURF FISHING TIPS

You may think that you will be limited when surfing fishing because you won't be casting from land. But this is not true. There are many fish that you can catch from the shoreline. This makes it easy for saltwater anglers to catch good game fish without having to leave land at all, so if you're saving up for a new boat and casting platform to get out on the water you can still get a feel for saltwater fishing and be primed for when you're ready to go out and land even bigger strikes.

1. Surf Casting For Beginners

Surf fishing is a simple fishing technique to learn. Your tactics will change depending on where you are, the weather, the seasons, tides, weather conditions and what type of fish you want to catch. But, if you are just starting out, there are some basic principles that will help you get started. Surf casting is the most important thing to learn if you are new to surfing fishing. Surf casting is similar to regular casting but you need to be more precise and distance-focused in order for your bait to land in the surf. A basic overhand cast will work well. To cast an overhand, take the rod in one hand and bend your arm into a 90-degree angle. Then, quickly flick the pole out of your hand. Next, launch the bait into water by straightening your arms. Surf casting is all about perfecting your accuracy and distance.

2. CHANGING TACTICS: READING THE BEACH

While experienced surf anglers are able to spot the best spots and read the beaches, novice surfers can find it daunting. There are several things that you can do to increase your chances of finding fish.

  • The sandbar is an important component in locating fish. It will tell you if the fish are closer to shore or behind it, and if they are chasing bait fish. The sand bars will change as the waves and storms pass, but you can find them by determining the point where the waves break.
  • Outflows, or rip currents, are breaks in the sand bar where the fish will often come to feed in the surf. Since fish may also feed to the left or right of an outflow, you may also want to try casting your line to either side of the outflow.
  • Areas of the beach with coarse sand and shells are more likely to be near deeper holes that will hold fish, so look up and down the beach for these areas to increase your chance of getting a strike. Remember that these subtle differences can have a huge effect when it comes to surf fishing.

3. DECIDING WHEN TO GO SURF FISHING: WEATHER AND TIDES

As you get more proficient at surfing fishing, reading the beach will be easier. However, there are some other things you should consider. You will notice changes in the behavior of fish as the tides and weather change. It is difficult to find perfect fishing conditions. Knowing when the fish should bite can make the difference in a successful day of surfing fishing. Each surf angler will have their own opinions and experiences regarding the best surf fishing conditions. However, there are some general guidelines that most surf fishermen can agree on.
