FLORIDA FISHING IN WINTER: SPECIES TO TARGET
You can go fishing in winter if you plan a trip to a location that is known for its warm winter temperatures, sunny skies and many saltwater species. If you are able to identify the right baits or lures, where to look, and what areas to concentrate on, winter fishing in Florida can prove to be extremely productive.
If you are looking for a Florida winter fishing trip, these six species of saltwater fish are worth considering.
1.SHEEPSHEAD
A member of the porgy family, sheepshead generally migrate to inshore waters from November through February. Sheepshead are often found near docks, docks and pilings. You should use a size 1 hook. Smaller hooks are better as sheepshead are known to be notorious bait stealers.
2. SPOTTED SEATROUT
Water clarity in the backcountry estuary environments is at a peak during the cooler months of the year, making it easier to locate seatrout on the grass flats near sandy potholes. A soft plastic shrimp lure attached to a fluorocarbon leader of 15-20 pounds and a popping cork is one of the best options for winter trout fishing.
3. REDFISH
Target winter redfish along mangrove shorelines up in brackish spring-fed rivers, around bends or deep holes, where the water temperature tends to stay more constant following a cold front. A soft plastic shrimp or the Ned rig can be used to target redfish in the winter months.
