Kayak Navigation Tips
Many anglers feel that the best kayak for fishing is a sit-on-top kayak because when you are elevated, it's easier to spot fish while navigating through the water. These kayak fishing tips will help you plan your first trip, regardless of what kayak type you choose.
- Your route should be planned in advance. If possible, use a circular or oval route. This will help you keep track of your progress and prevent you becoming fatigued on the return.
- A fishing rod of at least 6'6 inches or more can be used to control fish and maneuver them around your kayak. When landing fish from your kayak, make sure you don't pull your fishing line too far. Always leave at least one rod length from the tip of your line to the fish.
- You can practice paddling with one arm. You can paddle with just one arm if you are able to steer your kayak past obstacles and keep large fish from dragging you into the current. Place the oar handle on your forearm, and then steer with the paddle.
- Keep your head inside of the boat, and your eyes centered on the kayak. It is a good rule of thumb to keep your head inside the boat and your body centered in the kayak. Keep your head inside the kayak to stay in the boat.
- Keep your distance from the shoreline in windy or strong current conditions. Kayaks are very light in draft so you can steer towards the thin water. This will make navigation much easier.
