Plastic Worm Fishing for Beginners

When I started bass fishing, one thing I struggled with to do was fishing plastic worms. If you Texas set a worm, it isn't always easy to recognize bites when just beginning out. When the worm hits the branch or rock, it may appear to be it's a bite. However, a bite may not seem like anything as your line might drift off in a lateral direction. If you're fishing through the weeds, then using the Texas rig is certainly the best option, however, if you're fishing for pilings, rip-raps or rock piles, bluffs or even mud there's a better way.

OPEN HOOKS

A hook that is open is almost self-setting, provided you choose the correct hook. A straight wire hook that is light in weight is a good choice. The reason I prefer the light wire hook is because it is often straightened with constant pressure, which means you can remove it from the majority of snags. It requires a lot more force than a swimming fish would put on it, except that the fish is massive. The most straightforward method to fish using open-hooks is by using the smallest jig head. Jig heads come in a wide range of weights, colors and shapes. You can make them paintable. A California fisherman I have met begins with simple pea heads and flattens the heads with a hammer and then paints them by hand. Sometimes, he glues eyes onto the heads, and you could also purchase eye stickers designed to be used on lures. Dart head lures are perfect to swim a worm they add more movement and fall in a different way than a pea head round jig.

GEAR

A quality dart head (also known as pea head) worm rod is seven or six feet spinning rod that has some "give" to it. Rods that are rigid will make you lose more fish whether by breaking the hook off as well as straightening it. Light line is the best choice for anglers, and the majority of anglers employ the 8 to 10 pound test line regardless of how small and deep the water they're fishing. You can use a limp line to make casting easier. Some fishermen use braids but I've always stuck to mono since it has some flexibility to it. Berkeley produces mono that changes in hue, so it's not visible under water but simple to spot above the water. Being able to discern the line's actions can be very helpful.

Fishing DART HEADS

The biggest error you could make when using a dart head is to begin fishing too quickly. If you are casting it out then let it fall while the bail is open until you notice the line slack, that means it's reached bottom. As the jig falls and your line is being watched, be sure to watch it. If it jumps , is swaying the chances are that a fish may have taken into it. They usually move toward you however occasionally you'll see one that is heading towards the boat. In any event you ought to be able to tell through the line motion that it's not falling in a natural way. You just the reel. I find it beneficial to keep a few fingers in the line ahead of the reel in order to maintain some pressure on the reel. This will go an LONG way to avoiding the horrible loops that you can experience on a reel that spins.

After you've caught your fish, it's likely that he'll place the hook on himself. A steady pressure can make those tiny hooks slide into. A large spool in your reel will assist you in taking line fast and catch up to the fish. Make sure to keep the rod in place when he's hooked and be careful not to move the rod in a circular motion which allows him to escape. Nets are a darthead angler's best friend. Do not try to sling him to the side or over 10:1 he'll come off. Lip him or put him in a net.

If you're fishing for vertical structure then cast your lure close to the piling, or whatever then let the lure fall. If the water near the piling is deep, the chances are the fisherman will take it all the way down. If there's flow, throw it onto the downstream end and allow the flow take it all around on an slack line. We once caught 28 smallmouth off of a single ledge in Lake Powell over eighty feet of water. The fish were just 25 feet deep and they ate dart heads on a regular basis. They were just killing Yamamoto Grubs.
