Boxing was added to the Olympic Games programme in 1904, but only among men. Women only joined the competition in 2012, and since then they have competed in three weight categories. At the first Olympic Games in 1904, only athletes from the United States participated. At the next games, the number of participating countries increased to four. The maximum number of participating countries in boxing competitions was recorded in 1988 - 106 countries. Usually the number of male boxers in the competition exceeds the number of female boxers. For the first time at the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, the number of participants of both sexes will be equal.
The USA and Cuba have traditionally been considered favourites to box at the Olympic Games. The US has 50 gold medals and Cuba has 41.
