The band's name, Thirty Seconds to Mars, actually contains a bit of fiction: traveling to Mars at light speed would take much longer than thirty seconds. Yet, the name—borrowed from a paper penned by a Harvard scholar—holds a powerful symbolism for the group.

Shannon Leto, an avid photographer, captured the image for their debut album’s cover. For the promotion of this album, the band barely used any advertising and intentionally avoided leveraging Jared Leto’s Hollywood fame.

In 2011, the group earned a place in the Guinness World Records for playing the highest number of shows in support of one album, This Is War. With this album, Thirty Seconds to Mars also introduced “The Triad,” a new symbol that quickly became synonymous with the band.

Their record A Beautiful Lie achieved platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). This deeply introspective album reflects on the notion of life as a “beautiful lie” from which the main character valiantly yet unsuccessfully tries to break free. The recording spanned three years, five countries, and four continents to fit Jared Leto’s busy acting schedule. The music video for the title track was shot on an actual iceberg in Greenland. Additionally, Thirty Seconds to Mars became the only band to produce a large-scale video in China for the song From Yesterday. They often create their music videos themselves, occasionally using aliases to give the impression of different creators behind each project.

Jared Leto leads a double life as a musician and an actor. He played roles in films like Fight Club and Requiem for a Dream (his breakout performance), also winning an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club. Among his recent roles is the 2025 film Tron: Ares. Known for his dedication, Leto once lived on the streets of New York to prepare for Requiem for a Dream, and for Suicide Squad, he studied criminals and psychiatrists closely, spending hours perfecting his version of the Joker’s laugh. With a commitment to individuality in both film and music, Leto maintains a healthy lifestyle and remains in great shape, ensuring he gets enough rest—at least eight hours of sleep each night, no matter how hectic his schedule gets.
