MAGIC REALISM. UBALDO OPPI
Ubaldo Oppi (Bologna, 1889 - Vicenza, 1942) was one of the initiators of the Novecento artistic group, founded in 1922 in Milan. He is also considered one of the greatest protagonists of the "magical realism" movement. His special peculiarity lied in inserting typically classical elements such as drapes or buildings, into a modern and quite minimalistic scene of the painting. The style of the artist was obviously influenced by his long studies of the fifteenth-century Italian art.
An absolute protagonist of those "roaring” years, one of the most famous artists both in Europe and the United States, he lived the social and cultural life at its fullest: for example, in Paris he meets Modigliani in disarray, has a love story with the model Fernande Olivier, who leaves Picasso to run away with him, is enraptured by the intense colours and mesmerised by the Fauve brushstrokes of Kees van Dongen, by the sinuous signs of Matisse and many others.
In the 1920s Ubaldo created fascinating portraits of women, from his friends and muses to his beloved wife Delhy. These art works became well accepted by the wealthy public of that time and were purchased in fabulous collections.
