Education and Vocational Guidance
Introduction to Education and Vocational Guidance was an exceptionally interesting class because I looked at ordinary things and affairs from a different, more professional way. Before attending this class, I was rather skeptical that it was possible to characterize a person and give advice on a career choice simply by analyzing answers to one or two hundred questions in statistics project. However, after learning the material and seeing MBTI and SII results, I changed my mind because I realized that these results and new information would help me to decide which career to choose.Looking at myself at the beginning of the class, I see now significant qualitative changes. At that time, I used to be skeptical about the positive impact of education and vocational guidance. I thought that the class was useful to some degree, although I believed that is was impossible to give advice on which career path to select because it was a personal and intrinsic choice. I perfectly remember the discussion that we had in class during week 1 because I was challenged to think of how I perceived work and what skills a good worker should possess. I found it somewhat difficult for myself to answer these questions because everything seemed too broad and abstract. However, after studying various theoretical approaches, for example John Holland's theory, which explain everyday things and choices from a scientific perspective, I realized the importance of such knowledge. In this class, I gained new interests, especially those related to discovering what factors influence a personality and career selection. Moreover, now I am interested in analyzing prerequisites for successful employment. Apart from new interests, I learned much about my skills, strong as well as weak sides, and values with the help of MBTI and SII. I answered almost three hundred questions, and the results were very convincing and interesting. When I was taking the test, I did not know what results I would see because the whole assessment appeared to be simply a set of many diverse questions. However, when I received and opened the results, I was truly impressed as they described me almost perfectly. They are almost perfect because there are several aspects that I do not agree with. For instance, according to the MBTI results, one of my weaknesses is the inability to see opportunities and possibilities, but it is not true because I often see new chances and even search for them. In addition, the section called Top Strong Occupations says that the two most suitable careers for me are a farmer and occupational worker. However, it is not something that I agree with because I am not interested in such careers and have never been. Still, I understand that such results are based on the analysis of my answers, and some of them might have been given without proper consideration. Nevertheless, the information that I learned about myself made me think more of my future. Moreover, the recommended careers, apart from the ones mentioned above, and the description of my character traits are interesting to me, and I will consider them while selecting my future profession after graduation. To conclude, the MBTI as well as SII results and the whole class allowed me to learn what my strong and weak sides were. I think that Introduction to Education and Vocational Guidance was helpful in the process of assessing myself, my skills, and strong and weak sides. I will not stop improving my knowledge and will continue learning more new information in order to select a good profession which will bring me a sense of fulfillment.
