Utilizing platforms for your community can be a struggle when you don't know what to do or even where to start. This little article aims to help you create your first online community. You can use any community platform that fits your needs but this article will typically refer to Discord.
Step 1: Are you on the right platform? Before we go over creating a server on the Discord platform. You need to consider if its the right platform for you and your communities niche. Discord offers a range of features however some are still missing. As a new owner, I recommend experimenting on different communication platforms before setting it in stone.
Step 2: What do you require? Why are you building an online community? What will your members receive by interacting with your community? What will you get out of it as the creator? It's always important to dive into what you want to accomplish, find a place where you can thrive with others.
Step 3: Setup your server Before setting up a server you should find the correct niche for your server. We won't go over finding a niche in this article but one on this topic should be coming out soon. So let's move on. Assuming you know how to create a blank/template server, you can go ahead and create a name & icon. Think outside of the box, and find something that would make you standout to your audience. Once that's ready, you can start creating your own variety of channels for your theme.
Step 4: Set clear rules An important aspect of any safe community is to establish some clear rules for your server-users so they know what is expected and what may get them punished. Always understand that you don't need to add everything you can & can't do, moderator discretion is applicable.
Step 5: Growing your community Your simple community is now setup. Congratulations! The final issue to cover is that there is no-one to use your community in aid. This means that its finally time to invite your first member! When starting out a new online guild, you should invite your common friends and utilize social media like TikTok & YouTube. Remember that it isn't all about member-growth but also activity, if your server isn't active people will leave, try adding some bots to spruce things up (try not to go over 15 bots!)
Step 6: Article Conclusion Now that you've completed steps 1-5, your community is finally running! The next step is to obviously work on building up & improving your guild. Start conversations, announce events and create any other relevant channels & roles. You may also need some moderators and staff to help you keep the server safe, read our article on finding moderators for more info (Coming Soon).
